Quality pop from 1993,

This review is from: Some Fantastic Place (Audio CD)
This 1993 album was a great return to form for the talented Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook, more than 15 years and about 12 albums since their 1978 debut. Some Fantastic Place is an engaging album of wry observations and poignant tales of ordinary folk. Every song tells a story whilst musically the album is diverse and multifaceted. Uptempo numbers like Third Rail and Everything In The World alternate with beautiful ballads like Pinocchio and Images Of Loving. There are no fillers here as the duo's songwriting prowess is displayed throughout the album. My personal favorites include the title track, a sad song about a lost friend, the soulful ballad Loving You Tonight, the anguished Everything In The World, and the witty Cold Shoulder. Squeeze paints memorable scenarios in their songs and their intelligent lyrics are set to catchy tunes. Some Fantastic Place contains some of the most authentic and timeless pop music of the early 1990s.

Some Very Good Songs,

Having at this point been in the business over 15 years this is a surprsingly good effort. The title cut is a classic about losing a good friend far too soon. The other good cuts are the rollicking "Everything In The World" and "Third Rail" and heartfelt ballads "Images Of Loving" and Pinnochio". Even "Loving You Tonight" although basically a Tempted rewrite is excellent. The other cuts are pretty decent also.

Except for the compilations, this might be the most cohesive CD UK SQUEEZE have ever released. Not one weak track and some real stand-outs. Most other SQUEEZE cd's I own have a few brilliant tracks and some fillers ( except for 45's which contains all their outstanding hits ), but this one is strong all the way through with some near classics. Great lyrics based as usual on their sharp observations and delivered with a large dose of humour. If you like intelligent POP with class, this will make you very happy.
