Megan Seacord, The Rocky Mountain News

"A newly made classic"

Product Description

This is the band's first CD, which has been described as a newly made classic. It contains the hit "Bermuda line" (rumor has it that it has been covered by at least two other bands) as well as the bands own version of the by know famous Peter Jones song, "Kilkelly". The lineup on the album is the same as the second album (Athens Hotel) with Doug Berch on Dulcimer and Larry Worster on Guitar and the rest of the band: Mick Bolger, Jean Harrison, Mike Fitzmaurice, and Rod Garnett who together with Brian Mullins are still touring and making new albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of Colcannon's first CD's and still one of the best, June 12, 2004

This album is a great introduction to the music of Colcannon. While I would recommend picking up all the albums that this band has released this one is as fine a sampling of their music as can be found.

It features a survey of traditional and contemporary works, my favorites include a Bass heavy "Siege of Kinsale/Flight to Salamanca" and a light and joyfull "Oxford Road/Bloom of Youth".

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best acoustic Celtic CDs around, December 12, 2003

My devotion to Colcannon's music began with this CD, shortly after I saw them for the first time in concert. Now . . . I never miss an opportunity to catch a show or buy one of their CDs. Truly one of the best acoustic Celtic groups to be found anywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Irish magic, October 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Foreign Land (Audio CD)
I have been an avid fan of Colcannon since seeing them at a bluegrass festival in Colorado nine years ago. They were my introduction to Irish folk music and as a result, I would travel to Ireland if for no other reason than to hear the music. Some Foreign Land is probably still my favorite Colcannon CD. The combination of musicianship and storytelling involved in their performance is magical. Only the lead singer, Mick Bolger, is actually native Irish, but the other members certainly have the hearts to be. My favorite piece on this CD is "Kilkelly", based on actual letters from a son & father. The first time I heard it, it brought me to tears. If you ever get the chance to see Colcannon live, take it! Their cameraderie with each other and the audience only adds to the joy of listening to their music.
