the "Y" factor,
By
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
Perhaps if Billy Ray didn't have so many "Y"s in his name, and the song he is most known for didn't end in them to make a catchy title, his life would have been different. Perhaps if Bill Cyrus had sung "My Aching Heart", he wouldn't have had such a massive hit, but would have gained the respect of the "music snobs" who trash his talent with those other "Y" words, "hokey" and "corny".
They sell him way short. He has a marvelous deep, throaty voice, an excellent songwriting gift, and an all-round ability as a performer, with a down-home funky style that makes his music interesting, heart-warming, and very enjoyable. This CD has the feel of a live club recording, rather than a studio session, with an "up-close" sound. The band is terrific, and deserves mention: Terry Shelton, guitar / Barton Stevens, keyboards / Greg Fletcher, drums / Corky Holbrook, bass, with additional guitars by Keith Hinton and Sonny Garish (steel). Billy Ray wrote "Someday, Somewhere, Someday", and co-wrote five others (tracks # 3, 4, 8, 9, and 10). I like the humor and musicianship in "Wher'm I Gonna Live ?" which he wrote with Cindy Cyrus, and he also wrote the patriotic hymn that is another favorite of mine with her, "Some Gave All". His cover of Lee Hazelwood's "These Boots are Made for Walkin'" that was a hit for Nancy Sinatra in 1966 is fabulous, and one of the numbers on the CD that make great dance music. Good songs, wonderful vocals, and a tight, skilled band all come together to make this a solid country CD, well deserving of praise. This album stayed a record 17 weeks in the # 1 spot on both Country and Pop charts, and total playing time is 36'01.

Excellent Debut,

There's much more to this collection than "Achy Breaky Heart". (So what if it's a little on the corny side. You can't say it isn't catchy!) Billy Ray proves himself to be a talented singer & songwriter, & most of the highlights were co-written by B.R. himself. They include the honky tonkers, "Where'm I Gonna Live" & "I'm So Miserable" (Love those lyrics; "I'm so miserable without you, it's almost like you're here."), the 50's-style slow-dancer "Ain't No Good Goodbye", & the great title-track ballad. Also includes the Springsteen-ish "Never Thought I'd Fall In Love With You", as well as the radio hits, "Could've Been Me" & "She's Not Cryin' Anymore".

Some Gave All - A nessessity for all album collectors.,

"Some Gave All" was Billy Ray Cyrus's debute album. Its first single, "Achy breaky Heart", gained top chart success, and no song in country music has been able to surpass its awesome popularity. Billy Ray became a superstar pretty much over night because of this album. There were several hits and great songs on this album, like "It Could've Been Me". It sold millions of records, and is still selling today! This is truely an album worth having. Overall, it is one of the best albums of all time. Billy Ray has also put out many more great things. For any album collector, or fan of great music, you have to get this album. It is one of the greatest albums of all time.

The best Countryrock I ever heard,
By
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
I found this cassette when I was just a kid. I loved it because of the song Achy Breaky Heart, but as I grew up I bought it on CD and started listening to the other songs. And this is Countryrock at its best. Nice, melodic songs with great personal texts. Cyrus got a good voice, the band is great, and the songwriting is solid as gold. The best songs here are with no doubt "Could have been me", "Someday, Somewhere, Somehow", "Never thought I`d fall in love with you" and "Some gave all". These are songs that can be listened to over and over. They all have this very personal stroke that makes it recognizable for every listener. No songs about camping in the wild and cowboys in the west, or a boring farmer here. Cyrus writes songs about love and the truth about life, and they ring true to everyone that hears it. To bad he lost a bit of his grip later on, but Some gave all will always be remembered for this great record.

A Terrific Collection,
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
I have all of Billy Ray Cyrus' CD's and I have enjoyed them all, but in my opinion, this is still his best and one of the best country albums ever put together. Every song in it is a winner, many of them written or co-written by Cyrus. "Some Gave All" is a great tribute to our veterans, one of the best if not THE best I've encountered. "Where'm I Gonna Live" is funny and clever; "Could've Been Me" is touching and beautiful, as are "Someday, Somewhere. Somehow" and "INever Thought I'd Fall In Love With You". Cyrus' very appealing sense of humor, which was such a hit in "Achy, Breaky", also shines in "I'm So Miserable", and "She's Not Cryin' Anymore" is melodious and moving. In sum, this is an album full of well crafted, thoughtful, funny and lovely-to-listen-to songs. Critics and Nashville snobs who snubbed Cyrus because his first hit was a novelty clearly didn't listen very carefully to these songs or the impressive and unique voice that sings them. Don't miss this CD--it's a gem.

fresh new artist from the Bluegrass State with his own sound,
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
I have been a Billy Ray fan since his hungry days in the bars in Ohio and West Virginia. His sound is uniquely his own and that is definitely a breath of fresh air for country music. I have enjoyed all his cd's but my favorite one is still Some Gave All. His approach to music is a combination of rock, country and bluegrass. This CD has great songs but my favorite songs are Could Have Been Me and Where'm Gonna Live these songs show the vocal ability that he has and the emotional range he is capable of. I would recommend it highly to anyone interested in the other side of country music and especially to rock-a-billy fans.

Simply Classic Country,
By
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
If you wanted to look for a very good classic country music CD, this is it. But on top of that, this one adds a very powerful feeling for the country that verges in the emotional with the song Some Gave All. Eventhough this was written many years ago, it really applies to the days we're living today and i really enjoy the lirycs of the song, as i totally agree with what they mean!
The rest of the songs are also excellent! And they are a perfect reflection of different aspects in the life of most Americans, however i guess they could also reflect aspects in the life of many other people in the world as well.

Review the musical content, not the hair......,
By notatthistime "notatthistime" (notatthistime) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Some Gave All (Audio CD)
I've been guilty of it myself, commenting on the foibles of the artist rather than the content of the disc. I'll try to correct that. Right off the bat, eliminate AchyBreaky. Ok, get over it. It was 10years ago-it's done, he's on Pax Tv, he's suffered enough. This is good basic 90's country that really is quite the norm now days. To call it groundbreaking is obviously wrong, but a lot of country acts "choose" their songs from huge books of writers material. The selections here are great. Its very listenable and again, discount the A-Breaky and the mullet, it's not that bad. Worth 9.00 bucks? You bet!
