3.0 out of 5 stars Good read, but not great
While this book was endorsed by Janet Evanovich as the "feel-good book of the year", it had the normal romance plot and didn't really grab my interest. It was a good fun read, but not the best I've read. Try a book by Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, or Susan Elizabeth Phillips if you're looking for something great.

4.0 out of 5 stars One for the Bubble bath, October 6, 2003
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
Heroines: varied

Prim, responsible Katie Collins has just taken on a whopper of an assignment for her rich, controlling, egomaniacal boss--get his plump and plain eccentric daughter down the aisle with a suitable man from Philadelphia's snooty upper crust.

Too bad for Katie that "Cinderella" vamoosed before her would-be fairy godmother and hunky bodyguard knew what was happening. Now Katie has to return to her Texas roots, which she's avoided for a decade, to try and convince the skittish Wilhelmina to come home away from the hog farmer she's fallen in love with! And to top it all off, she has to travel with the security firm owner cum temporary bodyguard, Michael Wingate, a man she is trying desperately hard not to be attracted to. A man who is running just as hard from his history as she is from hers.

What worked for me:

I liked the characters and the storyline. But I particularly liked the fact that Wilhelmina's story was given so much attention. (I just wish I'd gotten to know her lover Doug better.)

I suspect Ms. Banks is a fan of Jennifer Crusie, but instead of her romantic comedy featuring a weird looking dog, this time we get an ugly cat.

Size-wise Katie was slender, but trying to hide her prettiness under plain clothes and a severe hairdo. Wilhelmina was plump and a bit plain, but in the eyes of her love she was nothing short of a goddess.

What didn't work for me:

At times the plotline felt a bit far-fetched, but for the most part it was a lot of fun.

There were a few paragraphs that didn't feel as polished as the rest of the story. There were also some mid-scene point of view switches that left me a bit confused.

Overall:

"Some Girls Do" was a fun, fast read. A good choice for the bubble bath.

Warning: This book has some steamy moments and coarse words within its pages.

If you liked "Some Girls Do" you might also enjoy "Heaven in Your Eyes", "Getting Lucky", "Runaway Bay", "This Heart of Mine", "It Had to be You", "Carried Away", "Fast Women", "Lola Carlyle Reveals All", "Born to be Wild", and "Wishes".

5.0 out of 5 stars You Will Fall In Love With The Romance Genre!, June 12, 2003
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book is a perfect example of why a person reads romance. This book is a feel good book, and you will come away with a smile on your face after you finish it.

The characters are wonderful! Katie Priss is a perfect example of overcoming your past, and still finding love when it's right in front of your face. Michael is a total hero in more ways then one. I loved the interaction between Michael and Katie from the first. There relationship evolves and is wonderful to read.

Wilhemina is a great character. She really comes into her own and lets face it most of us are like this likeable lady then we want to admit. Her storyline was just as entertaining as Michael and Katie's. Chantal, and Jeremy, are also great additions to this wonderful cast of characters.

This should really be on your summer reading list. A perfect book for a long car ride, airplane flight, or a trip to the beach, or just sitting at home avoiding the heat! Let Ms. Banks entertain you, you won't be sorry!

4.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious double tale of romance, April 7, 2006
By
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
After spending her childhood living down the exploits of her sassy mother, Katie has done an "un-makeover" on herself, downplaying her beauty and feminine wiles. When her prickly and oft-married boss hires her to find a husband for his mousy daughter with a big bonus thrown in, Katie cannot resist. She needs the money to care for her deaf and motherless brother.

Michael's father lost the family fortune to bad investments and took his own life, causing his mother to go into a severe depression, and Michael was shuttled around. After his last partner cheats him out of his business and his fianc? dumps him, Michael decides that getting the security contract for Ivan Rasmussen will bring him back on top. Although he thinks that the idea to find Wilhemina Rasmussen a husband is ridiculous, he must go along with it if he wants the family business.

Katie soon discovers that finding a man for Wilhemina is going to be harder than she thought in the snobby upper crust Philadelphia society. Wilhemina is not a beauty queen, and her sense of style leaves something to be desired, particularly her penchant for tacky hats. When a scheming trust fund baby breaks her heart, Katie tells a devastated Wilhemina a story about a princess and her cowboy knight. This gets Wilhemina thinking, and faster than Michael can get Katie to let down her hair, Wilhemina has fled in the middle of the night to Texas to find her intended.

Turns out Texas society can be just as bad as Philadelphia, and once again Wilhemina has her feelings stepped on, but this time she fights back, with hilarious results. When she finally meets a nice quiet hog farmer and thinks that he might just be the one, Katie and Michael are hot on her trail to bring her back before daddy finds out. But the more time Katie and Michael spend together, the more their feelings for each other deepen, particularly as they see each other at their most vulnerable.

Will Douglas be able to accept that the eccentric woman he has just met is actually an heiress? Will Katie ever let Michael see her softer side? Banks is at her best injecting comedy into steamy romance. This time we have two great couples - one that is reluctant to commit and one that cannot wait. Throw in a gigolo, a hairless cat, and long lost family members, and you have a memorable romantic tale that will keep you rooting for both couples. While this is definitely Katie's tale, Wilhemina steals it once she gets her groove on! Followed up by "When She's Bad" and "Trouble in High Heels" featuring Katie's younger sisters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect blend of fun and sensuality - Highly recommended, May 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
Katie Collins carefully conceals her good looks with dowdy clothes and heavy glasses, hoping to be judged by her ability and not her appearance. With a boss working on his fifth marriage, she certainly does not wish to draw the attention of an insecure woman-not with her family responsibilities and driving need to succeed. When her boss Ivan offers a hundred thousand dollars to find his unattractive daughter a husband, Katie accepts with the hope of finally assuring financial stability. Unfortunately, she shares responsibility for Wilhelmina with security specialist Michael Wingate.

Michael likewise has a driving need to succeed. While Katie provides prospective candidates for Wilhelmina to marry, he must screen the candidates, ruling out ex-convicts, freeloaders, disease carriers, and rednecks. At the last minute, Ivan slipped his hairless cat's protection into the contract as well. So when both Wilhelmina and the cat disappear, it is up to Katie and Michael to work together to get them back before Katie looses his job and Michael looses his contract. Their adventure will lead them to Texas, where tall hair and tall hats mark a territory completely foreign to a man like Michael, but familiar to Katie in incredibly uncomfortable ways.

Author Leanne Banks brings her characteristically succinct skill of penning lighthearted romps to her first full-length novel in SOME GIRLS DO. Dynamic characterizations spring to life, especially Katie who determinedly distances herself from her mother's image. Consequently, her transformation from prude to siren will have readers amused, particularly as it brings out the protective instincts of this marvelous hero. In fact, Michael and Katie share a determination to also overcome their parents' flaws, not to mention a scintillating chemistry that adds sensual texture to an otherwise amazingly playful read. The secondary plot likewise provides a wonderful storyline, especially with Wilhelmina's unlikely price charming and the world's ugliest cat. Katie's mother's words of wisdom likewise add a note of hilarity and levity readers will love. The result proves that fairy tales can come true when SOME GIRLS DO. The perfect blend between fun and sensuality, SOME GIRLS DO comes highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Girl Did, May 8, 2003
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved Some Girls Do! Leann starts each chapter with a "Sunny-ism" which made me wish I'd known Sunny Collins myself. The characters are funny and real and I couldn't put the book down. I loved the vulnerability each character showed, from Wilhemina's lack of confidence in her body to Kate's love for her brother. I cried and laughed and thought the end came way too fast.

It's sexy and filled with enjoyable humor. Highly recommend. I read it in a single chuckle-filled sitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read romance, April 22, 2003
By
Marilyn Puett (Huntsville, AL, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
Series romance author Leanne Banks has made the taken the plunge into the single title market and yee haw howdy, the results are terrific. Some Girls Do offers readers a double-your-fun story of love and laughter.

After leaving behind her trailer park childhood for a job working for Ivan the Terrible Rasmussen, Katie Collins never dreamed her job would require finding an acceptable husband for Ivans overweight and socially inept daughter. Katie had always tried to be normal (whatever that was) and to stay under the radar. She just didnt want to be like her late mother Sunny. But the 100K price tag that Ivan attaches to the assignment persuaded Katie that this might be worth the effort. She had responsibilities and that kind of money would be a big help.

Michael Wingate owned a security company and in trying to win Ivans business, he found himself embroiled in the husband-hunting plan as well. After Wilhemina jumps ship and heads for Texas to do a little hunting for herself, Michael and Katie follow her. Of course, Texas is the last place Katie wants to be. Its what shes been trying to escape all her life. And Michael isnt without demons of his own. He has something to prove and maybe this will do the trick for him. But these two prove to be a match for each other and watch out as the sparks fly!

Add a cowboy gigolo, a hog farmer named Douglas, and a hairless cat to the cast of characters and readers are in for a wild adventure. And although Sunny Collins is dead, she still influences her daughter from the grave by invading her thoughts, often at the most inopportune times. Be sure to pay careful attention to the Sunny-isms sprinkled throughout the book. You may want to frame them and hang them on your wall.

Some Girls Do will make you laugh out loud and is ripe with sensuality and excitement. It has something for every reader: a plain-Jane woman, an unhappy rich girl, a sweet cowboy who is every girls dream, a hunky businessman who is your dream if youre not into cowboys :-), and a happy ever after conclusion. Get your copy ASAP and enjoy the ride!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised, February 10, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
I did not buy this book by choice but received by mistake when receiving a new member order from a book club during the summer. I picked it out last night from my over 200 TBR book pile because I figured I could probably skip through large parts of the book. I finished the book in one sitting (but not by skimming) and now plan on buying L. Banks newest book. Katie Priss tries to ignore her growing feelings for Michael Wingate because her mother gave birth to 4 children with different fathers and she doesn't want to become known as a "loose" woman as she was. Michael Wingate was betrayed by a business partner, dumped by a fiancee, and has a mother in a mental hospital and doesn't want to trust Katie. One of the things I liked about the story was that you knew the personal struggles the characters were going through but the author didn't go on and on about it like some of these types of stories. Also, while cliches abound throughout, somehow the author makes them work. All in all, this is a geat book to just sit back, enjoy and let yourself be entertained.

5.0 out of 5 stars ~ It Did Not Disappoint Me ~, January 3, 2004

This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading Leanne Banks short Christmas story "Faith's Sugar Plum Daddy" I could not wait to read "Some Girls Do" I knew that it was going to be a good read and I was right, This was a feel good laugh out loud kind of book. Reading this story I can actually picture the characters, Katie works of Wilhemina's father so does Michael, Ivan wants to see his daughter Wilhemina get married, he has hired Katie to find his daughter a husband but there is one catch Michael has to approve if the guy that will end up marrying Wilhemina, she is over weight and doesn't feel good about herself, she has gotten to parties but no man see the real her they want to be with her because of who her Dad is because he has money. Katie tells Wilhemina a cowboy story that her Mom use to tell her, so she runs away to find her cowboy, she finds Douglas but he is not what her father wants for a son in law much less a husband for Wilhemina. This was a fun read I have been so lucky to have found good books to read and this is one of them.

Happy Reading Lisa

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and endearing, August 20, 2003

This review is from: Some Girls Do (Warner Forever) (Mass Market Paperback)
Katie Collins is a personal assistant to CEO Ivan Rasmussen. Unwilling to jeopardize the financial security of the job, she hides her natural beauty behind black-rimmed glasses and dull, gray suits. Her boss offers her $100,000 to find a husband for his overweight and shy daughter, Wilhemina, while he and his sixth wife are in Europe for six weeks. She willingly accepts the daunting task, knowing that the money will provide for her and her deaf younger brother, Jeremy. In addition, Ivan entices security specialist Michael Wingate with a lucrative contract with his company if he is Wilhemina's personal bodyguard and screens the prospective husbands. Michael grudgingly accepts since he has his own personal goals to achieve and demons to overcomes.

Their jobs become more difficult when their charge takes off for Texas after Katie unknowingly gives her the idea of finding a cowboy knight in shining armor. Both Katie and Michael suffer from trust issues, stemming from their traumatic childhoods, as they set off for Texas to find Wilhemina. Both do this out of the job obligation, but Katie is also worried about the gentle and naive Wilhemina. The journey is even more painful for Katie since she has vowed to stay away from Texas, where she was raise by her mother, who fathered four children with four different fathers. Being self-reliant over the years, Katie and Michael are surprised by each other's acts of kindness. As the story progesses, their latent feelings for each other bloom. The secondary plot deals with Wilhemina. We learn that she is a shy and vulnerable woman who just wants to find someone to love.

This book is funny, entertaining and endearing. "Some Girls Do" is a wonderfel single-title debut for Leanne Banks. If this book is any indication of future books, I look forward to the sequel, "When She Was Bad", later this year.
