5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story January 13, 2008
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for some time. I suspect with the careers of the 2 leads (Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Dempsey) taking off they way they have certainly helped.
The story centers on Michael (Dempsey), a college student who visits his girlfriend Gabriella (Connelly) and her family for Christmas in Canada. When he gets there, he discovers that her family is exceedingly strange: her father is a writer who spends most of his time wandering the house nude. Her grandmother mistakes Michael for her dead husband. Her two sisters express interest in him. To top it all off, Gabby tells Michael that she no longer loves him.
Well worth the 10 bucks Amazon is charging for the DVD.
UPDATE 2/19/08: As some other reviews have stated, the widescreen presentation appears to be a hard-matte transfer, lopping off the top and bottom of the picture, thus "castrating" Patrick Dempsey's flashing scene. This is a very bare-bones presentation, but better than nothing at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Genius Movie About Love August 6, 2000
Format:VHS Tape
A masterpiece. One of the reasons for which film was made. It's one of the best two or three movies I've ever seen. Like other reviewers before me, I wish I could have seen it in the theater -- but it was never released in the US because there's a limited amount of frontal nudity from Patrick Dempsey (completely appropriate for the storyline). It's one of the travesties of censorship that those of us who are Americans couldn't see it in its first run. One of the background tales surrounding the movie is that producer Robert Redford wouldn't change it to accommodate purist restrictions. If you've ever been to Canada -- especially Quebec -- to do so would have undermined the complexity and integrity of the subject matter. As much as we missed thee, we applaud thee for fine art.
The story is one of love; one of the most beautiful that's ever been portrayed. Not only the love of lead character (played by Dempsey) with his college girlfriend, but the seduction of an understanding and non-judgmental family. His hormones drive him to Quebec City for a holiday vacation; his intended informs him almost immediately that she is no longer interested in the same way he is. He's stranded, but surrounded by a bevy of characters who cajole the eye, tickle the fancy, and illuminate the soul.
The story is a matriarchal one. The female characters rise to the surface, and the male characters find themselves treading water to get attention. All of them, though, female and male, provide us with extraordinary performances. While the male characters rapidly lost their positioning in the story, the actors who play them all provide such searing interpretations that you never question their influence. This is a film for male and female; gay and straight; young and old.

As it is, however, Some Girls is largely unknown, underrated, and ludicrously dubbed a "teen sex movie." Yikes! I don't think Hollywood knows what to do with a film such as this, which defies easy classification. Most of the rest of the filmgoing and -making world, however, does not so readily pigeonhole works of art. The directing, script, casting, acting, set design, lighting, costumes, art direction and cinematography all are superlative. It wears its age -- 20 years -- amazingly well, and can hold its own with any indy being made today. I'm glad it is finally coming out on DVD. I saw it on the big screen when it was first released and it still haunts me. A bucket full of stars for Some Girls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie. Bare bones DVD. February 15, 2008
Loved this movie since I saw it late night (I'm a night owl) on cable when I was a teenager many, many years ago. Excited this whimsical, romantic kinda film finally made it to DVD.

I can't give you a better storyline than the folks above me gave. I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Always liked Patrick Dempsey and this movie is one of the reasons why.

Connelly is as beautiful is ever. There is a sort of mischievous innocence about her. She has ALWAYS wowed me ... and the lingerie in this one doesn't hurt.

Lila Kedrova, as Granny, also gives an amazing performance. I'm not one for grandmothers but it's not hard to believe how the 18-year-old (or so) Dempsey falls in love with her. That, to me, is what this film is all about. If you're a guy's guy, you're likely not gonna get this movie and you might not understand that last sentence. For the rest of you, if what I wrote is confusing but you're a romantic, just trust me. This is a good movie.

It's worth the $9.99 despite the bare bones presentation. No trailer. Just a stereo track. Just the movie. But it is anamorphic widescreen -- it'll fit your widescreen TV just fine and looks great -- so that's super news!

Btw, it isn't the 4x3 movie you may have watched on video all these years ... so, ladies, I don't think you'll see McDreamy's naughty bits. The film was hard-matted when projected at the theater, cutting off the top/bottom parts. What I'm saying is the video casette was showing more of the frame than what you'll seeing here ... though THIS is how it was intended to be seen.
