5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Story
I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for some time. I suspect with the careers of the 2 leads (Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Dempsey) taking off they way they have certainly helped.

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!
If You're planning on buying this DVD for *the* scene of Patrick Dempsey's private bits, don't waste Your money.
I'd been waiting years for a DVD release of this great film, in the hopes that I'd get to see what was missing on the sides of my full-frame VHS copy. What I got instead was a "matted" widescreen, which is basically that full-frame version with the top &...

I have been waiting for this to be released on DVD for some time. I suspect with the careers of the 2 leads (Jennifer Connelly and Patrick Dempsey) taking off they way they have certainly helped.
The story centers on Michael (Dempsey), a college student who visits his girlfriend Gabriella (Connelly) and her family for Christmas in Canada. When he gets there, he discovers that her family is exceedingly strange: her father is a writer who spends most of his time wandering the house nude. Her grandmother mistakes Michael for her dead husband. Her two sisters express interest in him. To top it all off, Gabby tells Michael that she no longer loves him.
Well worth the 10 bucks Amazon is charging for the DVD.
UPDATE 2/19/08: As some other reviews have stated, the widescreen presentation appears to be a hard-matte transfer, lopping off the top and bottom of the picture, thus "castrating" Patrick Dempsey's flashing scene. This is a very bare-bones presentation, but better than nothing at all!

5.0 out of 5 stars If this film were in French or Italian, it would be an acknowledged classic, January 17, 2008
This review is from: Some Girls (DVD)
As it is, however, Some Girls is largely unknown, underrated, and ludicrously dubbed a "teen sex movie." Yikes! I don't think Hollywood knows what to do with a film such as this, which defies easy classification. Most of the rest of the filmgoing and -making world, however, does not so readily pigeonhole works of art. The directing, script, casting, acting, set design, lighting, costumes, art direction and cinematography all are superlative. It wears its age -- 20 years -- amazingly well, and can hold its own with any indy being made today. I'm glad it is finally coming out on DVD. I saw it on the big screen when it was first released and it still haunts me. A bucket full of stars for Some Girls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great movie. Bare bones DVD., February 15, 2008
This review is from: Some Girls (DVD)
Loved this movie since I saw it late night (I'm a night owl) on cable when I was a teenager many, many years ago. Excited this whimsical, romantic kinda film finally made it to DVD.

I can't give you a better storyline than the folks above me gave. I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

Always liked Patrick Dempsey and this movie is one of the reasons why.

Connelly is as beautiful is ever. There is a sort of mischievous innocence about her. She has ALWAYS wowed me ... and the lingerie in this one doesn't hurt.

Lila Kedrova, as Granny, also gives an amazing performance. I'm not one for grandmothers but it's not hard to believe how the 18-year-old (or so) Dempsey falls in love with her. That, to me, is what this film is all about. If you're a guy's guy, you're likely not gonna get this movie and you might not understand that last sentence. For the rest of you, if what I wrote is confusing but you're a romantic, just trust me. This is a good movie.

It's worth the $9.99 despite the bare bones presentation. No trailer. Just a stereo track. Just the movie. But it is anamorphic widescreen -- it'll fit your widescreen TV just fine and looks great -- so that's super news!

Btw, it isn't the 4x3 movie you may have watched on video all these years ... so, ladies, I don't think you'll see McDreamy's naughty bits. The film was hard-matted when projected at the theater, cutting off the top/bottom parts. What I'm saying is the video casette was showing more of the frame than what you'll seeing here ... though THIS is how it was intended to be seen.

It's a "fun" movie (at least for me it was) about the misadventures of a young man while staying with the eccentric family of who he thinks is his girl... I enjoyed it VERY much and snapped it up when it was finally released to DVD...

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Romantic Comedy, February 14, 2009
By

This review is from: Some Girls (DVD)
An involving 1988 romantic comedy about a young man who travels to Canada to spend Christmas with the young woman he loves and her family. With beautiful cinematography (shot in very naturalistic light), a wonderful cast, and an engaging script, this coming-of-age story goes way beyond the usual screwball comedy by adding an emotional component that echoes film noir. Funny and touching, the film drew me into the world it portrayed; I thought it ended much too soon. This is one of those films where you feel that the director, the actors, the script, and the music are all in harmony. Highly recommended for all of us who know families that are a little different.

I too have waited a long time for a DVD copy. I haven't bought it yet, but will do so in a few minutes.

I have shown this film to many friends over the years and, interestingly, it is always the men who responded to it most positively. The women liked it, but were not wowed the way the men were.

I think it speaks to the young man that each of us were. Trying to impress the girl, failing, impressing the wrong girl, failing, finding the true nature of love (if we're lucky) beyond the physical.

Great music, great acting, touching in so many ways. It's more than worth a look.

I'd been waiting years for a DVD release of this great film, in the hopes that I'd get to see what was missing on the sides of my full-frame VHS copy. What I got instead was a "matted" widescreen, which is basically that full-frame version with the top & bottom lopped off (thus cropping out Patrick's flash).
MGM really dropped the ball on this one. They should have included both the matted widescreen version AND the full-frame version like they did with the sci-fi flick "Supernova" (it'd easily fit - there are no extras on the 90 min. disc anyway).

SOME GIRLS is a real curio. The reason why I purchased it was for the talented Oscar-winners, Jennifer Connelly and Lila Kedrova. I remember when I first saw this film on cable. It wasn't a great film, but the cast (especially the wonderful Kedrova as Connelly's grandmother) kept it interesting. Connelly's family is definitely interesting all right. Only recommended for fans of Patrick Dempsey or the beautiful Connelly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly lit stupid film, March 18, 2008
By
Jim Jr (Buffalo, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Some Girls (DVD)
This film looks like they forgot to turn the lights on when they were filming. Except for the hospital scenes, everything - even the outdoors scenes - are badly lit.

The whole idea of the film is really unappealing. There is a lot of male nudity, with the private parts mostly covered, but one scene with Patrick Dempsey showing it all revealing his shortcomings (thank you David Neven).

SPOILER: The ghost of the grandmother in the cemetary is really dumb.
