An Atypical Work of Arthur's,

This review is from: Some Kind of Love Story - Acting Edition (Paperback)
At 42 pages, this is work that hardly challenges some of Miller's better known works in many respects. However, this short two character play has some positive aspects that fans of Arthur Miller will enjoy.
Angela was a witness to a murder but she is not forthcoming with details that could exonerate an innocent man. Instead Angela withdraws behind a schizophrenic screen of multple personalities ranging from a haughty aristocrat to a prostitute. Angela pours out details to the detective that also happens to be her former lover as her personalities change. While she continues to withhold the total story she reveals more details. Based on her pre-existing medical condition, one has to wonder how much of her story is the truth. I really did not feel that cold slap of realism that typifies Miller's plays in "Some Kind of Love Story". The fact that I am not certain that the story is any closer to resolution at the end of the story than it was at the beginning is also bothersome. Yet as a tremendous fan of Miller's, I am glad to have read it. |
