5.0 out of 5 stars This story had me laughing out loud!
I read it in bed while trying to keep from laughing so hard I'd wake my husband. Theresa's characters are real people, with real thoughts and insecurities and faults--that's probably why I love them so much. I can never wait for her next story, and then it's over too quickly.

3.0 out of 5 stars So-so Theresa Weir is Still Better Than 99% of the Competition
A book doesn't have to be perfect for me to enjoy it. If the writing is above average and I feel connected to the characters, I can look over a lackluster plot. That is the case with "Some Kind of Magic."

Claire is celebrating her birthday, having just been dumped by her gigolo of a boyfriend, and wishing something exciting would happen during a long, snowbound...

5.0 out of 5 stars Theresa Weir touches on the insecurities in many of us, November 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
Maybe other people in the world never spend hours doubting themselves, or destroying relationships because they can't quite say what they really mean. Or maybe they're just afraid to admit it. As so many times in the past, Theresa Weir has tapped into primal fears and expressed them with love and humor. Both Dylan and Claire are on the run from life and themselves; it's definitely an expression of "Some Kind of Magic" that they find each other. Readers who want perfect heroines and poster quality heroes won't enjoy this book. For the rest of us, it's a cozy read by the winter fire to warm you up from the inside out. It's also an expression of hope for all of us who hope one day to stumble into happily ever after. You have to take the risk of that first step

5.0 out of 5 stars Another magical book from a brilliant author!, October 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
Theresa Weir has been one of my favorite authors for years and SOME KIND OF MAGIC is definitely another winner! Loved the characters, loved the story, read it in a few hours. I especially loved the twists in the hero's backstory. This starts out as a funny thrill-ride of a hostage story and never lets up steam until the last page. (Especially sauna steam! <g>) I only wish it had been longer so I'd have had more to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unusual, refreshing, and funny contemporary romance, August 19, 2003

This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
Some Kind of Magic was the first book I read by Theresa Weir and I will definitely seek out more of her books. This is a funny and charming story with gentle leads and realistic personalities. There is no high suspense or other contrived means to lengthen the book. It is mostly about two people who meet under very odd and misunderstood circumstances. Those misunderstandings, which the hero allows to continue, are the greatest challenge facing this couple.

Claire Maxfield is an artist just turning thirty. Her fairly tacky boyfriend has just left her and her self-esteem is somewhat lacking. One night, as she steps inside her car to go home, a strange man holds her at gunpoint from the backseat and demands she take him to her home. Claire lives in an isolated home far from town. She doesn't believe in phones and is known to keep to herself for days at a time. Therefore, it doesn't seem odd when she doesn't show up for some days because she is a hostage - or rather - maybe she holds the hostage - in her home. It's a comedy of errors and beginning love as each holds the other captive. Claire finds she can't really believe he is that convict on the run from the plane crash or is he? It doesn't seem to really matter.

Dylan is the mystery man in the back seat who demands of Claire to take him to her home. He has been injured and needs a place to recover. Dylan is a hard one for the reader to figure out. Don't try to guess too early on because you won't be right. When the clues start to drop about his identity, the reader figures out who he probably but he is still one odd character for a romance hero. And his improbable identity is very refreshing. I doubt you have run across this one before.

The love story of Dylan and Claire is fun, light reading. Both her hero and heroine are very likable characters although neither seems to have much self-confidence. As secrets are exposed on the parts of both leads, deeper intimacy is found and the story gets only better. There are some sensual scenes that definitely deserve a solid 4.0 out of 5.0 (see More About Me for rating guidelines).

Some Kind of Magic is a notch above most humorous contemporary novels we see written again and again. It doesn't follow the same old romance plot lines. The only reason I rated this book four stars rather than five stars is that it takes a pretty in-depth book for me to give that highest rating. I was totally captivated by this fresh and funny book. I think you will be too

4.0 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD romance novel, July 30, 2004
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
This book pulled me out of a slump. Theresa Weir has a "style" to her writing that is hard to compare with any other author. I miss her romances but her suspenses under Anne Frasier are very good and she seems to thrive and do very well in that genre.

This book was a quick read. The h/h had plenty of sexual chemistry/tension between them and the story/plot took unexpected twists and turns. The only problem I had was with the heroine's obsession with the voodoo doll that she received as a gift from her best friend. Her downfall at times was actually believing that Dylan loved her because of the voodoo doll. Otherwise, a quick read, a great find and a recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quirky, Funny Variation on Woman in Jeopardy Plot, May 2, 2000
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
This book has lots of elements you'd never expect to see in a romance. An Idaho winter, mittens, a sauna, a voodoo doll, chess... and handcuffs.

When Claire wished for excitement, she didn't mean for her wish to be taken so literally. Before she knows it, she is kidnapped by a mysterious stranger. Is he a criminal? Or is he, like Claire, simply another damaged person?

I've got to mention Claire's wardrobe. She dressed like characters out of the movie "Fargo." I'll bet Dylan never thought he'd start to think of mittens and scarves as sexy!

I gave this book a B+ at All About Romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Step Up for a Contemporary Romance, December 19, 2010
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
Rarely do I write a review, give a book four stars but consider it a keeper (something I want to read again in the future). SOME KIND OF MAGIC is that story. The magic in this story is subliminal. Claire Maxfield is celebrating her thirtieth birthday with friends. Her life is good but she wants something more. She gets it in a big way.

Our hero, Dylan, enters Claire's life by carjacking her at gunpoint. Love at first sight is definitely not a thought between these two characters and that is what makes the story so interesting. You learn that Dylan is not a bad person; he just has some problems and has to come to terms with these issues. In the meantime Claire is forced to hide him in her cabin temporarily and the tables slowly turn. First she is the captive, physically. Then he is, emotionally.

Ms. Weir wrote Claire as a strong female character but, as others have pointed out, the circumstance with the voodoo doll makes her behavior a little hard to understand. I don't have a problem with this. Claire's 'weakness' is believing in herself. She just came out of a relationship where her trust was broken. Others believe on not stepping on cracks, walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror; everyone has their quirks.

Learning who Dylan really is, seeing how he copes with his problems and, finally, coming to terms with what is important to him makes the story interesting. I would have given the story five stars but there was a brief part that I thought Dylan could have communicated better. You'll know what part it is when you read the book. Otherwise, the story flows, the romance when it develops is sweet and the chemistry between our H/H is strong; you want good things to happen and that is what sets apart a good story from just a common one. Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical, April 16, 2004
By
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
If I could I would rate this book with 4.85 stars, I would. It was really good. It was funny (as usually seen with this author) and unpredictable. You can't go wrong with voodoo dolls, handcuffs and a sauna. It was really good- but it wasn't amazing (thats why I didn't give it a full 5). It lacked something- I'm not really sure what it was but it still lacked it. Don't get me wrong, it was a really good book but it's not my favorite book from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Mate!, January 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Kind of Magic (Mass Market Paperback)
On Claire's thirtieth birthday she blows out the candles on her cake and wishes for some excitement in her life. Even though she did not manage to blow out all the candles, her wish came true. She was carjacked at gunpoint!

The tables turn and Dylan becomes the captive. Snowed in at Claire's mountain cabin with no phone. The longer the two are together, they see that there is more to each other than meets the eye. "Mothball Lady" is an excellent painter. "Escaped Fugitive" is nothing of the sort.

Claire is in love with Dylan, but thinks he does not REALLY return the feelings. Claire had been using a birthday present from a friend. A voo-doo doll. If only he could love her for herself, she would hide him from the law forever!

This one will give you the "warm fuzzies" at the end. I laughed out loud at parts and sighed in envy at others. The perfect read for cold and lonely nights.***
