4.0 out of 5 stars Very Nice EP
First off let me say that 'Some Kind of Monster' was one of my favorite songs off the controversial 'St. Anger' album, and this here is the cd-single/EP of that track...the live tracks here document the band's early days, and are performed flawlessly with the band sound as energetic and vital as ever...but i have to say the real surprise and standout for me on this album,...

All I can say is that I was very disappointed. It's not because of the number of songs or the song selection, but the fact that the aggression that James used to growl these songs is gone. He now wants to be a singer. There's no singing "Damage, Inc." or "Ride the Lightning". These songs have lost all of it's original feel of anger and aggression. And James forgets some...

5.0 out of 5 stars Get Over It, Already They Are not Puppets, September 14, 2004
I don't care what you people say, Metallica still kicks-a$$. Next time you morons feel like ragging on James and company remember that bands have to evolve or they tend to disappear. Can you honestly name very many bands from the 80's metal scene that are still around today? NO bands that broke up and reunited DO NOT count.
Metallica would love to make albums that sound just like Kill 'Em All but if they did (as much as you complain about wanting that sound) everyone would start whining "That sounds like stuff they did in the 80's, can't they get with the times?" I've noticed that you morons can't be pleased. you just like to complain about anything METALLICA. Also I would like to know if some of the reviewers have even seen Metallica live? Because I have seen them twice recently and they played King Nothing off Load and Fuel off Reload. Not to mention Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, and Sad But True. As a matter of fact I don't know of any concert since the black album was released that they have not played Enter Sandman. And this album and T-shirt were great, a good price too. I can't wait for the movie. You people don't want to listen to a great band your just want a group of puppets that will only play what you want them to.

And James forgets some of the lyrics to "Ride the Lightning" to boot! Lars' drums sound weak. They sound like a set of K-Mart children's drums. I realize they aren't young anymore but I think they would at least try to maintain some of the "fire" the got them going in the first place. If you really want a copy of this, I would suggest buying it used. Otherwise, don't waste your time.

2.0 out of 5 stars Can i get a refund?, October 21, 2005
This review is from: Some Kind of Monster (Audio CD)
If you're going to spearhead the movement on piracy and copywrite laws you better damn well put a good album out . I'm not talking about two or three good songs either . As a consumer I'm entitled to know what I'm buying . If i knew the singing on this cd lacked any balls and the drums sounded like someone beating on garbage cans i wouldnt have wasted my hard earned money on it . The setlist is great ...Motorbreath , Hit the Lights , Damge Inc etc ...the execution stinks . This is fourth time Metallica has stolen money from me . Reload , St Anger, S&M and now this peice of #$%. The question is ( and its a good one )...do i have any rights as a consumer ? or have i been hoodwinked again by three whiney washwomen posing as a metal band ?

5.0 out of 5 stars old school rox, July 29, 2004
This review is from: Some Kind of Monster (CD & Large T-Shirt) (Audio CD)

This is a cool EP to get if you dig collecting live Metallica tracks. Will Culp's review for this was pretty awful... hey will, how could you say damage inc and ride the lightning are some of metallica's weakest songs in the 80s? Are you one of those trendy metallica fans who only know Fade to BLack and Master of Puppets? Your musical tastes obviously lacks.

The edit of Some Kind of Monster sounds better than original but nothing great. Its kind of a shame Metallica spent more time making a movie that'll probably tarnish their perception of most fans who viewed them as those guys in the 80s who were willing to take anybody down. They could've spent way more time recording St Anger than crying to some psychologist aobut their problems.

Either way, old tracks are great and don't listen to Will Culp's sub par review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality EP, June 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Some Kind of Monster (Audio CD)
This EP features the full length album version of Some Kind Of Monster, including 6 live tracks recorded on June 11, 2003, in Paris, France. The biggest highlight for me was the edited version of Some Kind Of Monster. It sounds amazing! I just wish the would have let some of the intro play out, but nonetheless a great EP. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Latter day Metallica Live., August 26, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Some Kind of Monster (Audio CD)
If you really want to listen to Metallica Live, get Live **** or go to http://www.livemetallica.com to download their shows. They are more complete.
Some kind Of Monster isn't that bad, but it is more on the hard rock side.
Ride The Lightning (one of my favs) doesn't seem strong enough, lacking the power and intensity of some kind of monster. You know, after 19 years since Ride the Lightning, 20 since Kill Em All,17 since Master of Puppets (Recorded in 2003) , they would have been powered up. Look at Sabbath. 19 years apart and they still play like 20year olds. The drums don't seem to echo enough. Most live albums would have echoes, you know. Again, listen to Reunion by Black Sabbath. You can't hear the bass that much.
Anyway, the show doesn't seem balanced. I would put more of the classics instead of Damage Inc, Motorbreath, and blah blah blah. Master of Puppets and Battery should be here. They havent played Whiplash for a while. Metal Militia as well. You want a completeshow, go to livemetallica.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster (2004), July 7, 2005
This review is from: Some Kind of Monster (Audio CD)
In 2004, Metallica had filmed and released a documentary film entitled, SOME KIND OF MONSTER. Metallica did not want to stop there. They released another album to go along with it. The album is entitled, SOME KIND OF MONSTER. The album stands as sort of the soundtrack to the documentary.

SOME KIND OF MONSTER
From Metallica's album ST. ANGER (2003). Even though this song was originally released on ST. ANGER, as well as being the second single to be released from ST. ANGER, Metallica decided to include it here, since it was the title to their documentary. Great song.

THE FOUR HORSEMEN (Live)
Original verion from Metallica's album KILL 'EM ALL (1983). Not bad.

DAMAGE, INC. (Live)
Original version from Metallica's album MASTER OF PUPPETS (1986). Incredible.

LEPER MESSIAH (Live)
Original version from Metallica's album MASTER OF PUPPETS (1986). Incredible.

MOTORBREATH (Live)
Original version from Metallica's album KILL 'EM ALL (1983). Incredible.

RIDE THE LIGHTNING (Live)
Original verison from Metallica's album RIDE THE LIGHTNING (1984). Awesome.

HIT THE LIGHTS (Live)
Original version from Metallica's album KILL 'EM ALL (1983). Great.

SOME KIND OF MONSTER (Edit)
Original version from Metallica's album ST. ANGER (2003). Not a bad edit.

This album is pretty good in the sense that it has Metallica performing some of their early tunes from their first three albums live. Gotta love Metallica's old tunes. This is a worthy album.
