5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation of Life/Love Stories, March 28, 1998
This review is from: Some Love, Some Pain, Sometime: Stories (Paperback)
I read J. California Cooper's In Search of Satisfaction. I enjoyed it so I now read everything that she writes. This book helps those who have become disillusioned with life and love. She shows examples of what can happen in the name of love and because of love. She colors the reality of love by showing human weakness and strengths. Sometimes we need a reality check and Copper has contributed this to all who are interested.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the brokenhearted, May 13, 2003

I recently went through a traumatic breakup and was wading between feeling sorry for myself, and viewing it as a way to improve upon myself. I've taken a positive outlook but once that familiar demon of loneliness sets in it often leads to trouble. Cooper's book not only helped me to maintain my positive perspective, but the stories of these woman, in the language of my family and my ancestors, helped me to heal and forgive myself. There is a theme that runs through each gem of a story that says "No matter how bad things get you have to keep moving, keep trying, keep loving." These stories give me hope and keep me company, and they teach lessons of love that only experience and wisdom can tell. This is the first book of Cooper's that I have read and anyone that is revered by Alice Walker and Ntozake Shange was worth a look. I am officially a fan.

I was shocked at first by the language, but I kept reading and I'm so glad I did..."the pleasure was all mine"! These stories made me smile out loud, cry and reflect on my life. The moral of each story is truely the reward from reading it. I highly recommend it to any single woman that has ever been in love, and I'm not talking about the younger ones, but those of you in the age group I am 40-45! It's wonderful, you'll definitely enjoy it. Again, the pleasure was all mine!

By A Customer
This review is from: Some Love, Some Pain, Sometime: Stories (Paperback)
When I started reading the first story, about the "Femme Fatale", it took me a couple minutes to get it. But once I got it, I couldn't put the book down. The stories are all original and omaginitive, despite being about everyday people living ordinary lives. Each one captures you!! Pleas read this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Love, Some Pain, Some Time, June 16, 2005
This review is from: Some Love, Some Pain, Sometime: Stories (Paperback)
Before I picked up this novel, I had a negative perspective on love. I had been hurt, and lost faith in love. After reading this book, I began to realize that love is possible, even if it comes in unexpected ways. Everyone has different perspectives, but I hope this novel is a blessing to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Wonderful Gift, April 11, 2002

This review is from: Some Love, Some Pain, Sometime: Stories (Paperback)
The beauty of this book lies in the simplicity of its characters and plots. The majority are joyful, forgiving, loving, fun, and most stories are ulitmately hopeful. Some Love will teach you to approach life and relationships with a big heart; to cherish all that you have, without compromising yourself. Its honesty, imagery, and language are unforgettable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all women, especially the fast girls., May 29, 1998

This review is from: Some Love, Some Pain, Sometime: Stories (Paperback)
I truly enjoyed reading this book. I felt extremely empowered and challenged to make the best out of my life despite what the world brings my way.

I really appreciate the time periods and location in which I envision the stories falling within (1930-1950 in the south). Being from the South, these stories remind me of simple wisdom and life experiences faced then and now.

Ms. Cooper, I love the inner you shown throughout your writings. Keep up the good work and I'll keep on passing your books along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than a "best friend", February 17, 2007
By

(VINE VOICE)
Sometimes even your best friend hesitates to tell you when she/he knows you're playin' a fool, but in this book of rollicking stories, you may see yourself in a few, and Ms. Cooper will be your new best friend for pointing things out to you. Even after 20+ years of marriage, I could still find useful insights ("wake up, girl!") into life, love, and perseverance. You can sink real low, but nobody can KEEP you there but yourself. Ms. Cooper gives literary voice to a large number of African American women, and her writing is as meaningful (and maybe more so) to those who are not African American women.
