2.0 out of 5 stars Great show - poor packaging
The show is a classic. Everything everyone else has written is spot on. Unfortunately, this three disc set only contains 11 episodes. The British version has all 28 plus the x-mas specials. If you have a multi-region dvd, don't waste your money on this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Comedy. Brilliant Actor., July 24, 2001

I have been a Michael Crawford fan for years, but still had not seen this show. So when I heard the series was being released on DVD, I finally took a chance and bought it. I am very glad I did!

Even though I'm usually not a fan of slapstick comedy, I was literally wiping away tears of laughter. I could not believe this was the same Michael I saw live as the Phantom of the Opera. He's so adorably goofy as Frank Spencer. Everything from the stunts to his comedic timing, even facial expressions were hilarious. I will definitely be watching this over and over again.

Without a doubt, this series further proves what a versatile talent he truly is.

This british sitcom from the 1970's is absolutely wonderful. The title character performed by Michael Crawford is one of the best. His character, Frank Spencer ranks at the top of my list among the funniest television characters of all time!!!
Keep in mind that this is OLD television, so the picture and sound quality is not perfect. However, don't let that keep you from investing your money in this set. You will enjoy it and you will get many laughs from it.
This is a hilarious show that all should see, if they have not already seen it!!!
MICHAEL CRAWFORD IS THE TRUE GENIUS IN THIS GEM OF A SITCOM!!!!
So move over Mr. Bean- Frank Spencer is the new man in town!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars If you love great British comedy, October 4, 2002
This review is from: Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em - Collection Set (DVD)
... don't overlook this set. I used to watch this program as a child on television and remember laughing hysterically with my parents. It didn't disappoint. Truly brilliant.

The premise is a bumbling married guy who means well but always seems to mess things up. He'll get the simplest of things wrong and the initial mistake will escalate into unbelievable proportions making you laugh so hard that tears will roll down your face.

There's a good deal of sexual innuendo in the sketches; Frank, the main character seems almost convinced that everyone wants him (including the military psychologist!) ... his wife balances him out with her tireless support, even though he messes up so often.

If you're looking for classic British comedy (or perhaps something you've never seen before), give this a try, you won't be disappointed. It's a cross between Black Adder and Monty Python, and even then it's not quite either of those two ... eh, you'll see what I mean when you watch.

Enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Never take the Phantom serious again..., August 6, 2004

Frank Spencer is part of British Culture. No comedian in the 80s or 90s could go long without a reference to him... mmm.. Betty...

Anyway Crawford got typecast from it and so he prevented significant distribution of these shows here so that people would know him as the Phantom. Which is a pity as they are so much better than some of the shows that did make it here.

But finally some of the best are available. Slapstick humour that is almost perfect.

I'll take one star off as the transfer quality is not that good and no extras but still.....

(Secret note to watch out for. Whenever he is doing a 'dangerous' stunt himself he has black leather gloves on. If they are missing its a double or not dangerous at all. Just watch how few of those there are. He did 95% of the stunts himself.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The title pretty much sums it up, August 10, 2005

Frank Spencer is easily one of the most infuriating good natured incompetents television has ever seen. A perfect naive looser, seemingly at the mercy of a society desperately needing protection from him, he always manages to somehow walk away from the disasterous consequences of his own ineptitude. Those around him aren't always so lucky.

Michael Crawford brings his own vision of a perpetually disfunctional lamer to the character and it works. This is a very funny show that proves a big budget isn't necessary if you know what makes people laugh.

British or American; this could be the funniest television sitcom EVER made. It is a crime that the BBC America channel never runs this show. I know that Michael Crawford has done other great things (i.e. Phantom, etc..) in his life, but he should always be proud of his work on this very funny show. He was (and is) a great comedic talent beside being a great singer also.

The absolute funniest TV series of all time!!. This box set contains all the spectactular episodes of this brilliant series about one man(?), Frank Spencer who fails at everything. It also stars Betty(Michelle Dotrice) and my favourite Columbo the dog. The first time I watched this series it is so funny I actually vomited. I'm sorry but I did.

Some of my favourite episodes are

Fathers' Clinic - where Frank goes to a clinic for expecting fathers and you can imagine the embarrassment that occurs.
Christmas 75 - where some rude schoolboys question his sexuality while he's dressed up as a pixie.
Scottish Dancing - my absolute favourite episode where his kilt comes off and you see his buttocks.

He destroys a super computer. He makes a psychiatrist go insane. He opens up a shaken can of beer into the face of an Australian diplomat. Cats, monkeys, etc all defacate into his hat.

He can't do anything right. This series exposes more of the British male character than any other British series. One piece of advice is not to eat anything before you watch this DVD.
