I love learning about what happens to people just like me in other countries.

Film did a good job of showing a mother's conflicted feelings toward her son's use of violence and sacrifice for a greater cause.

My wife loves this movie and once we changed over from tape to DVD it was years before we were able to watch this movie again.

This film of the involvment and interaction between families in Ireland who lived their political activism and families who tried their best to avoid the conflicts, but are drawn together by circustance, is impactful. The actresses are believable and the topic is straight from the headlines. It is an insight into how you can sometimes not bury your head in the sand, no matter how hard you try. There is also good in the hardcore politicos as well as in the more main stream conservatives. Outstanding film!

The movie is gripping and tells about the complexities involving the IRA, and the British Government. A heroic tale of men trying to fight for their freedom and the mothers who love them. The movie points out that there are no easy answers to this situation, and there are no winners--only losers, when it comes to war.

"Some Mother's Son" is yet another in a long list of films dealing with the strife in Ireland. This film is a thought provoking look into the world of the Irish Hunger Strike. Based around the activities of two IRA members who get captured and jailed. They fight for PoW status and begin a hunger strike to win support. One of the strikers (Bobby Sands) is elected to the British Parliament and their hopes are raised only to be dashed by Maggie Thatcher.
If you are into political, humanitarian or real life films, this film is for you.

I purchased this movie just recently although I've had the soundtrack to the movie for a long time & listen to it constantly. Being of part Irish descent I've always had an interest in all things Irish & especially in the IRA's struggle for independence in Northern Ireland. This is simply the best film ever made about that struggle & I've seen them all. The first time I watched it, I cried throughout the entire movie. I can't overstate how moving the soundtrack composed by Bill Whelan is. The music carries the movie & is very touching. The song 'The Sea Bird' which is played during the closing credits is outstanding. Getting back to the movie, the film is centered on the real life 1981 hunger strike in which 10 IRA & INLA prisoners (lead by Bobby Sands) starved themselves to death in a bid to gain political status. Some of the characters are fictional but the movie is based on fact. At the heart of the movie are two mothers
of two prisoners. One is an IRA sympathizer whose other son had been shot dead by the British. The other is a teacher who doesn't believe in violence & is opposed to the IRA. These two mothers are drawn together by fate & a friendship is made. The patriotism & loyalty of the prisoners is enviable & the suffering they endured at the hands of the British is more than most could withstand. Freedom is not free and it costs dearly. One could compare the Republican's fight to our own American Revolution. We fought the English for 8 long years to be free. The British called George Washington a terrorist, too. Not much has changed. The two mothers have to decide whether or not to take their sons off of the hunger strike & that is their moral dilemma. Is anything worth dying for? That's the ultimate question. I highly recommend this film. It's a memorable film and tells a story that must never be forgotten.

I have watched this video several times. Everytime I see it, this movie has a different impact on me. Each time, it leaves a different mark. Cannot stress how important non-fictional stories are! The truth needs to be told, and told it was!
A powerful movie, as it should be! A brilliant movie! A must see!

This is one of those movies that stays with you, in my case, forever. The media rarely shows the impact of political violence on such a personal level. This movie is a must-see for anyone interested in learning more about "The Troubles" in the north of Ireland.
On a side note, the soundtrack is as good as the movie.

A very moving film about the Troubles in Northern Ireland. I was deeply touched, and more aware of Ireland's history.

A great movie with some great acting. Helen Mirren is good as always, with great support. But where's the DVD? Way overdue.
