Robert Cray gives me the blues,
By A Customer
This review is from: Some Rainy Morning (Audio CD)
Some Rainy Morning is an excellent blues cd. This disc is killer. I love this one. There is a lot of pain in Cray's voice this time out(which makes for a great blues record). There still has the soul and r&b feel on this one, but Cray and his band dip deeper into the blues. This disc reminds me why Robert Cray is one of the best bluesmen in the business. Every Cray fan has their own favorite disc, this one's mine. I love all of Cray's work but "Some Rainy Morning" is my personal pick. I have been listening to Robert Cray since the release of "Strong Persuader". I knew very little about the blues, after I started listening to Strong Persuader......I wanted to listen to "the roots" of blues. So thank you Mr. Cray for turning me onto one of the greatest forms of music, the blues. Some of my favorite tracks on this one are "Steppin' out" "tell the landlord" "jealous love" "Will You Think of Me" and "moan". If you are a fan of Robert Cray and don't have this release you should pick it up. If you are a fan of the blues, and would like some good blues music mixed with some soul and r&b you should try Robert Cray's Some Rainy Morning.

"Surgeon General's Warning: This album may be too dangerous because it is literally dripping with raw emotion and pure attitude. It contains so much good music it may cause a severe addiction to the sizzling guitar and gripping vocals of Robert Cray." This cd blew me away when I first heard it and still does. "Moan" is the best song on the album but they are all really good. I enjoy Cray's previous albums with a horn section, but I have to say when it's just him and his band pared down, his voice and guitar playing are even more compelling. You really believe what he is singing about, he has so much conviction in his voice it's scary! If you are looking for music that will grab your attention on the first note and hold you there for the next 10 songs, then buy this cd! It is a must-buy for any fan of American roots music.

This is the best comtemporary blues album released in years and I am grateful to own a copy (second copy, 1st was stolen) and buying for the 2nd time! Aside from the most distinct Strat tones of Robert Cray is his ability to sing in such great harmony and melody and not miss a note picking his 6-string...incredible! I like "Moan", its got alot of energy, the poweful drums, rich bass, sweet organs, notable guitar chords and vocals. It is "a very richly" recorded album which stood out in all avenues. His loyaled and talented bandmates incorporates every subtle aspects in musicianship one can only find in a blues record such as Robert Cray's. "Some Rainy Morning" is a feel good album as it is in the "Blues". I can listen to this album over and over again and if it gets stolen again, I will buy my 3rd.

This is my favorite Robert Cray CD. Every song is a good one. The great ones are Moan, Little Boy Big, Jealous Love, Will You Think of Me, and Holding ON. The guy blends R&B, Blues and Soul perfectly on this CD. And on top of that he can bend them strings on that Fender!!! This CD is a must!!

Being a working professional musician I am always looking for music that is true and inspiring. Regardless of if you are a blues fan or not, Robert Cray is one of the best performers out there in any genre. His recent work (Midnight Stroll and newer) leans more towards soul than traditional blues. The subject matter is your typical "she done me wrong" blues cannon but he sells it like it should be sold. It's completely genuine. He's an incomparable vocalist who sings like a bird. His guitar playing, while on the surface seeming simple, portrays exactly the proper "feeling" for the arrangement and song. His playing is a statement; emotionally mature and marked by brevity. It does what music is supposed to do, express feelings that words cannot. It doesn't suffer from the continuous, spaceless, blues-chops-heavy solos that most post-SRV blues players suffer from. This isn't music for chops-meisters. I've seen his live show and it's better live. Great guitar tone, super solid band, it's one of the best shows you'll see. If you're a fan of the groove and soul music check it out.

One of Robert Cray's Finest,

I think that Robert Cray just keeps getting better with each release and here on "Some Rainy Morning" i feel that I am proven right. My favorite song is "Tell The Landlord", a song about a guy getting rid of his girl and how she is going to be sorry when he is gone. Other standouts are "Moan", "I'll Go On", "Little Boy Blue","Will You Think Of Me". We have a good mix of uptempo songs with some down and dirty slow blues, and I think that any music fan will enjoy this collection of songs.

I have a most of Robert's cd's, this one so far is my favorite. It's very well produced, and his guitar playing is top quality. I love his vocals on this cd, It's a good place to start your collection of Cray's music. The quality of the recording is some of the cleanest I have heard in awhile, every song on this is excellent. This is my favorite of his albums.

A MASTERPIECE - A METICULOUS AND PERFECT SOUL BLUES CD,
By
This review is from: Some Rainy Morning (Audio CD)
This review is particularly being written to the fan of the early Robert Cray, the fan who especially enjoyed Robert Cray when he first became popular. This fan may have bought three, four, or even five of Robert Cray's first releases, then bought a clunker or two, and then quit buying Robert Cray's music. To this fan I want to especially emphasize that "You're missing out on a fabulous Robery Cray cd, Some Rainy Morning, a later released cd that is so good that I can honestly call it "A Masterpiece-A Meticulous And Perfect Soul Blues CD!" Some Rainy Morning was released as one of last Robery Cray cds produced for Mercury Records. Some Rainy Morning is definitely a BLUES cd, not a more strictly soul cd, as are many of Cray's more recent releases. Some Rainy Morning is filled with 10 outstanding soul blues songs. The cd begins with the highly popular Moan, and then follows with nine more equally excellent mid-tempo soul blues recordings. Robert Cray very meticulously wrote or co-wrote most of the songs on Some Rainy Morning. All ten songs were very meticulously recorded by Robert Cray and his band. The absence of The Memphis Horns on this particular cd means that one can better hear and more fully appreciate the intricate skills of The Robert Cray Band. I especially enjoy Robert Cray's pure and soulful voice and his meticulous and intricate guitar playing on Some Rainy Morning. I also especially enjoy the excellent organ playing of Jim Pugh. Finally, Some Rainy Morning was also meticulously mastered so that the sound quality of this cd is also excellent. All of this meticulous care that was used to create and produce Some Rainy Morning has resulted in a Masterpiece which sounds like The Perfect Soul Blues CD! Some Rainy Morning is best heard with a good set of headphones, so that one can best comprehend and most fully appreciate it. I most strongly recommend Some Rainy Morning to everyone who is a Robert Cray fan and to everyone who enjoys outstanding popular music.

Uhhh... This cd gives me the blues and not the good ones,

I first saw Robert Cray perform at the Crossroads concert with Clapton and an array of other great blues musicians. Based on that performance I checked this cd out of the library and was greatly disappointed. There are at times some good guitar moments but most of the songs lyrics do not match the mastery at the guitar. There are gem moments but I'm afraid for me not enough to warrant any purchase of this cd. I am afraid this is one of only a few cds I have ever listened to that have not excited me or shown me something of a genre I did not know or feel, this takes the blues to no higher level. But don't take my word only you can tell...
