This review is from: Some Reasons Why I Am a Freethinker (Paperback)
"Some Reasons Why I am a Freethinker" by Robert G. Ingersoll is a reprint of a booklet entitled "Some Reasons Why" originally published in 1895 when Ingersoll was still alive. This review refers to the 2nd edition (American Athiest Press, 1993).
There are eleven very short essays of which three are untitled. The message Ingersoll sought to convey in this collection can be summed up as follows:
1) The Old Testament features a cruel god (Jehovah) who sanctions slavery, polygamy, war and the killing of innocents while demanding unquestioning allegiance.
2) However, when compared to the New Testament, the Old Testament is the epitome of justice and mercy. For it is within the New Testament that the dogma of eternal pain and torment is introduced. Ingersoll saw the concept of never ending torture (Hell) as taking cruelty to an unprecedented level.

Robert G. Ingersoll was a great man, a unique man who is sorely missed. Anything written by him is well worth reading. However, I found two serious problems with this booklet. Essay number IX entitled "Christ's Mission" ends abruptly in midsentence, an obvious type setting or proof reading faux pas. Secondly, the three page foreword written by Madalyn Murray O'Hair is shockingly pedestrian and inaccurate.

Making the work of Robert G. Ingersoll available to the modern reader is unquestionably a worthwhile endeavor. But, publishers, please present his thoughts and words in a format worthy of his greatness.

This is a small book only around 39 pages but as anyone knows who has read any of Robert Ingersoll's essays it is enjoyable reading.
