5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely essentual 1980s pop/rock album
Some Tough City.

For those of us that were listening when this came out. We recall A Fine Fine Day and The First Day of Summer on the radio. Both those tunes were heard regularly in 1984. Today with 1980s rock making into classic rock playlists I'm befuddled as to how they've been overlooked as strengths of that era.

Some Tough City is simply one...

2.0 out of 5 stars A Renaissance Records Vinyl Rip Sold as a Remaster
Don't waste your money on this if the record label says Renaisance! Your old vinyl LP with out do the sound quality of this CD scratches and all. What a sad state for this great record to end up! My friend Joe L tried to warn me. He said "if Renaisance can't get the master tapes, they'll use vinyl or even an old cassette tape. make a crop copy, and sell it as a remaster"...

Some Tough City is simply one of the best examples of pop/rock of that era. This album still shines through. The songwriting, musicianship and themes are still as relevant as when Tony wrote them.

As other reviewers state one of the brilliant aspects of this record is the storytelling. I'm still moved by A Fine Fine Day. Its a beautiful story. A Lonely Life is also brillant in that it focuses on drugs and what they do to someone.

Other favorites include: Hungry, First Day of Summer and Tinsletown.

Another huge accomplishment of this record is the flow. We start off somewhat mellow then speed up, then slow down. All the songs truely compliment each other. Its a rarity in today's music to find a album that does that.

I could go on and on with this record. Luckily for you I won't. I'll just sum it up with the message get this record. Its an impeccable album that has great strengths. Its truely a shame its not availible right now. I was fortunate to get my CD copy in 2000.

5.0 out of 5 stars Some Tough City by Tony Carey, April 4, 2000

Thoughtful, deep, timeless rock music. This artist writes and arranges inspiring music on the same level as Bruce Springsteen.

I bought this album when it first came out, and at present I'm on my forth copy of it, because I totaly wore out the previous three. This is the album that is for first time buyers of Tony Carey, simply because every song on it is great. If I should wear out this copy of Some Tough City that I currantly have, You can bet I'll be replacing it.

Tony is a story teller. This album is some of his best songmanship. It is a shame that the album is so hard to find on CD.

1.A Fine Fine Day 2.Eddie Goes Underground 3.First Day of Summer ... and on and on I could go listing every single track on this cd as a winner. Carey took a shift after I Wont Be Home Tonight creating a band called "Planet P Project", and then following that poorly recieved, yet very very good album, with "Some Tough City". This is the disc that people remember songs from the most, specifically "A Fine Fine Day (For a Reunion). This track when mentioned, people immediatly say, "oh yeah I remember that song". But if they only knew what they were missing out on besides that one song. I review and give 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pinkwrld, April 30, 2001

As a avid collector and owner of all of Tony Careys music rare singles, unreleased music, cds, etc. Tony's third cd (first In the Absense of the Cat not considered first release) this cd is very good with a great sound and every song a story behind it from a mafia uncle who gets out of jail and nobody remembers him and beyond. It is definately worth the while to own this cd, but the problem is, you may not get it here on Amazon, despite the fact it is listed. Myself and a friend have been waiting over 4 months to recieve new copies, but the runaround keeps getting rubbed in. So dont hold your breathe in just buying it, go to the auction and get it.

Don't waste your money on this if the record label says Renaisance! Your old vinyl LP with out do the sound quality of this CD scratches and all. What a sad state for this great record to end up! My friend Joe L tried to warn me. He said "if Renaisance can't get the master tapes, they'll use vinyl or even an old cassette tape. make a crop copy, and sell it as a remaster". I had to turn it off by the second track, the ringing in my ears from the awful sound of this copy gave me a headache that lasted for two hours. I forgot to check the label, now I'm out $20.00! You won't find this for sale on Tony Carey's website. I'm sure has nothing to do with this. Check the label. I guess I'll have to shop for a good vinyl copy of this so I can just make my own rip of Some Tough City. I'm sure my own rip will sound better than this one. I'll give it two stars because this is a great Album. Would be four if the original label put it out. but what good is it if it hurts your ears?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 80s Pop-Rock CD, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Some Tough City (Audio CD)
Tony Carey's 1984 solo album, SOME TOUGH CITY, is a great 1980s pop-rock album. Its overall concept is people trying to make it- and often failing- in big metropolitan areas, including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco. The overall message of the CD's lyrics is that if you don't take teasing like the humor in movies/shows featuring such beauties as Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Melissa Joan Hart, and Natalie Portman, you could end up in jail, in a hospital, or, worse yet, dead. The lyrics of this album, driven forth by music that sounds like a blend of Shooting Star, Foghat, Foreigner, Point Blank, and Journey, inspire me to use pictures of these actresses, as well as photos of Michelle Williams and Kristin Kreuk, to inspire me not to cross the wrong person at the wrong time. Overall, this great cautionary album is essential for any AOR fan.
