Empson is one of the few thinkers whose work makes one more intelligent. The clarity, subtly, and humanity of his thinking are matched but nowhere surpassed in the history of thought. William Empson is one of the smartest people every to think (yet his writing couldn't be more clear or accessible). His work has the mental intricacy of the English tradition of metaphysical poetry (Donne and the like), but it has the simplicity of Roman discourse. Reading Emspon is like talking with your father's old friend, but offers insight on par with the great thinkers of the Classical era.
