Studio and Live performance,
By
This review is from: Somebody Bigger Than You & I (Audio CD)
This CD gives to the listener bands from the DOT label. The re-issues are from studio recordings and a live performance. The live performances are from New York's Town Hall. After Clara appeared at the Newport Jazz Festival in Providence, Rhode Island, 1957, there was a great demand for her and style of music. It would be better if the studio recordings were issud separatly from the live and the live separately from the studio recordings. Hopefully in the future, the full album, 'Live at Town Hall' will be issued separately. This album will give you both studio recordings, and live performances. rvandermeer@msn.com

Warning! Cover is misleading...,

Has ANYONE noticed that the personnel pictured on the cover of this disc is not the actual group you're hearing? Not that the recording is without merit, but for goodness sake...the group pictured here is the original Ward Singers with Frances Steadman, Kitty Parham and Marion Williams. These three broke away from the orginal group to form the Stars of Faith in the late 50's. These recordings were made in the 60's! Although the music featured on this disc is some of Ms. Ward's finest moments (read my rating!!) I, as a consumer and admirer, feel it is misleading to picture the wrong group. There may be some who think I'm nit-picking, but when a group changes personnel, the appropriate picture should be used. The Rolling Stones wouldn't dream of putting out a current album with Brian Jones and Bill Wyman on the cover. Come on, wake up!!
Other than that, the disc is perfect!

i loved this collection of clara ward singers. i bought the cd for one particular song, packing up one of the groups best songs is great with the back up just as good as clara herself. all of the other songs will also make you weak in the knees with their angelic beauty. the single somebody bigger than you and i was incredible and better than i ever imagined. i will definitely buy more collections. if you love old time gospel you will love this cd.

DOT RECORDINGS,

I agree, this is an awesome CD. The DOT recordings are especially powerful. I especially like hearing that the sound of Clara Ward walking to the piano to play Joshu' Fit The Battle..., and saying to the girls, "Ya'll clap" was captured on the recording. (I'm strange like that.) I think it's priceless, and although I have had, for over 30 years, the LP, I'd pay a lot more than priced for this CD if I had to.
