A very easy reading narrative based upon the lives of the authors. Joyce and Henry are teen-agers who secretly arrange to meet with each other aboard the cotton field chariots (old discarded school buses) and other places, to share their feelings for one another as well as discuss current social issues, possibilities of college, and other alternatives of escaping the grueling labor in the cotton fields of Arkansas.
Their life's journey includes business failure and loss of everything in Arkansas to social and racial rejection in the Bible-belt of Oklahoma. But there is a family bond that perseveres and triumphs through the most adverse circumstances.
