Editorial Reviews

2009 two CD set from the Detroit Soul vocal outfit featuring their two albums (Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed and 100 Proof Aged In Soul) plus bonus tracks. This double disc set contains everything released under the name 100 Proof Aged In Soul, including the massive hits 'Too Many Cooks', 'Somebody's Been Sleeping' and 'Everything Good Is Bad'. The thirteen bonus tracks include the non-album singles as well as the single edits, several making their CD debut. Given that it boasted two of the most distinctive voices of '60s Soul, 100 Proof could be seen as Soul's equivalent to the `supergroups' that also abounded in Rock music towards the end of that decade. Lead vocalists Joe Stubbs (older brother of Four Tops' legendary front man Levi) and Clyde Wilson (as Steve Mancha) had already endeared themselves to all aficionados of Detroit Soul long before the assembly of 100 Proof, Stubbs singing for the Falcons, the Contours and the Originals, Wilson as a solo artist. Edsel.

5.0 out of 5 stars the complete 100 Proof [Aged in Soul], November 27, 2009
This review is from: Somebody's Been Sleeping/100 Proof Aged in Soul (Audio CD)

Led by vocalist Steve Mancha, 100 Proof [Aged in Soul] was one of the best groups of soul music from the early seventies. Produced by the Creative Corporation (Holland-Dozier-Holland), the group had many hit singles from 1969 to 1972, like "Too Many Cooks (Spoil the Soup)", "Driveway", "90 Day Freeze (On Her Love)", "Everything Good is Bad", "Since You Been Gone" and the mega hit "Somebody's Been Sleeping".

The double CD comprises the albums "Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed" (1970) and "100 Proof Aged in Soul" (1971), plus thirteen bonus tracks - non album singles and single edits - some that not appeared on the Castle edition from 1999, like "Somebody's Been Sleeping" (UK single edit), "She's Not Just Another Woman", "Breakdown", "If I Could See the Light in the Window" (Version 2) and two singles from 1976/1977 - "My Piece of the Rock" (vocal and instrumental) and "I'm Mad as Well" (Ain't Gonna Take no More), parts 1 and 2.

The group split in 1973, when the brothers Brian and Eddie Holland (now minus Lamont Dozier) moved to Los Angeles.

Highly recommended.
