I LOVED IT!!!!!!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Someday Angeline (Avon/Camelot Book) (Paperback)
I loved how Louis Sacher described Angeline's personality and life. I thought it was sweet that she could be anything from a layer to president, but she wanted to be a gar bage person like her father. I have read Wayside school books, but this was THE funniest of them all! I felt sorry for Angeline because she was laughed at for doing things that came natural to 8 year olds. Like, for example, sucking her thumb and being very emotional about every thing. I agree with Miss Turbone (a.k.a. Mr.Bone) when she said that if she had Mrs. Hardlick as a teacher, she'd go to the aquarium too. I rejoyced when Mellisa Turbone fell in love with Abel. Angeline deserved a mother. In my heart I know that they got married. I got worried when Angeline fell in the ocean and almost drowned. But, it WAS funny when she awoke in the hospital room to a joke. If I was Goon (Gary) I would have probably fainted when she said "What?". I loved this book with all of my heart. It is my third favorite book ever!! My first favorite is The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe. Look for my review on it! READ SOMEDAY ANGELINE!!!!!!

I am 15 years old and I read a huge amount. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It's incredible, and it gets better as you get older. Angeline, the heroine, is brilliant and charming. All she wants is to fit in, but she can't. Of coures, she finally does get the yummy end of the deal, but without compromising herself. And the middle...!!! of the book... I've read the Wayside School books and didn't like them half as much although they weren't bad.

You never know what to expect from a Louis Sachar book. The one thing you can always be sure of however is quality literature for young people that also appeals to adults. I have always been amazed at how this lawyer from California is able to weave elements of his stories together and not ignore the details. Little mysteries from the beginning of the story will make sense in the end.Angeline is too smart for her own good and is not well like at school, until she meets a young boy who is sort of an outcast himself. The two of them befriend a teacher who befriends Angeline's father. The story was cute and I was able to relate Angeline and really felt for her. I did have 2 problems however. First, Sachar routinely talks about the things Angeline knew before she was born because she was connected to the world, but he does not explore this topic as much as I would have liked, or expected. Also, I felt the suggested future romantic relationship between Angeline and Gary to be a little much considering she is only 8 years old. These are both small issues, but they did prevent the book from getting a five star rating. Why 4 stars?:

Our Group's Review,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Someday Angeline (Avon/Camelot Book) (Paperback)
When Angeline was little, she was very smart. She said she knew things before she was even born! Things like the first one to discover America was a snail, and her first word she ever said was "octopus." Her mom was very proud of her, but she died when Angeline was 3 years old.
Now, she is in the sixth grade when she is supposed to be in third grade (because of her "genius-ness"). She has no friends until she meets a boy named Gary, whose nickname is Goon. She also meets Mr. Bone, the lady who is Gary's teacher (you'll have to find out why this is, just like Angeline's father did!). Her teacher is mean, the kids in her class make fun of Angeline, and Angeline ends up trashing the whole classroom. The ending of the story involves fish, jokes, a garbage truck, and love. The topic is very good; it seems real to us. The way the author writes it, he keeps us entertained and waiting for the climax of the story. We wanted to just keep reading and reading! This was a great book! There is another book that continues the story--Dogs Don't Tell Jokes. We hope you enjoy this book, Gabriella, Dominique, Megan, Jeannine, Melissa, Brianna, Danielle, Tiffany, Dana, Mary, Max, Angela, Veronica, Anne, and Mr. Wright

This is my very favorite book! It is a wonderful story about being accepted in a community where we consider the "norm" to be the standard. Angeline is an eight year old "genius", and she has a very hard time fitting in... She is sent to a higher grade than she's supposed to be in, no one likes her, and ever her father doesn't know how to talk to her. If only he tried, he might discover that she is more normal than anyone imagines. There are some things that Angeline knew before she was born. I find this a fun part of the book, because it leaves this unexplained... And lets you guess. If Mr. Sachar did explore into this more, I think it might have ruined the story. It is just one of those mysteries that makes you wonder. It also adds character to Angeline. Angeline is "in balance with the whole". She understands things that others can't even perceive. On the other hand, she wants to be accepted. She wants to be included. And it isn't until she meets a funny boy named Gary and his kind teacher, Miss Turbone (Mr. Bone) that she finds confidence in herself. A beautiful story! I can't tell you how much I love it. One thousand stars!!

More brilliant than a gem, lovelier than a flower,

This is my favorite children's book of all time. I picked it up tonight, started rereading from some random point in the middle, and couldn't stop; further, I was chuckling aloud to myself or thinking "That's _so_ sweet" on every other page, literally. The book acts simple, with its very simple writing style, but it is beautifully deep and expansively meaningful. Lines like this--Gary turned around in delight. "You're back!" he declared. "So are you!" said Angeline. "I've always been here," said Gary. "You're back to me," said Angeline. --are only a few of the countless moments of delight. This book is a real work of literature, a masterpiece of wit, tender sweetness, and utter beauty. It speaks of a father's love for his daughter and of a romantic's insight into what really matters. _Someday Angeline_ affects your heart forever after.

A Marvelous Book for Readers of All Ages,
By
This review is from: Someday Angeline (Avon/Camelot Book) (Paperback)
Eight-year-old Angeline Persopolis never exactly fit in with her peers. For one thing, they're all at least three-years older than her, considering she's in the sixth grade. You see, Angeline is a genius. She could play the piano beautifully without ever having a lesson, she was always able to predict the weather, her first word was "octopus," and she could read before she could even pick up a book. But being that smart has done nothing but ruin Angeline's life, so to speak. Her father barely speaks to her, for he's intimidated by her intelligence, her classmates make fun of her because she knows more than the teacher, and her very own sixth-grade teacher picks on her, because she can't stand being shown-up by an eight-year-old. But all that changes when Angeline meets a fifth-grader named Gary Boone - a fellow outcast - and his kind teacher, Miss Turbone - known to students as Mr. Bone - who show Angeline that kind people are abound, she just has to look close enough to find them.
Louis Sachar has touched on many strange subjects that few authors dare to try, from a boys delinquent camp, to the thoughts of a gifted child. Yet he always manages to turn out something wonderful. And that's exactly what he's done with SOMEDAY ANGELINE. SOMEDAY ANGELINE is a book that will make anyone who has ever felt like an outcast realize that they're not alone. Angeline is a wonderful character who takes every challenge thrown at her in stride, and keeps a smile upon her face as she encounters people from all different walks of life. Her love of the ocean and salt-water fish will make all beach-combers relate to her nature-loving personality quite easily, and give Angeline another dimension to her personality. Overall, SOMEDAY ANGELINE is a wonderful book, that features an array of fun, quirky characters, who will bring a smile - and, quite possibly, a tear - to the faces of all readers. From one Angeline to another,
By a. Fenton "Angeline" (Oakland CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Someday Angeline (Avon/Camelot Book) (Paperback)
I first read this book when I was about Angeline's age. How lucky she was, to have have a father, ride in garbage trucks, know her first word. Sure, she didn't have any friends, but neither did I. I could really empathize with her, and not just the name thing. It started with that but you know, it grew to be so much more. over a decade later, I still look back and think about it. Angeline's someday came, I'm still waiting.

Louis Sachar really did a good job on this book! The sequel with Garry as the star, Dogs Don't Tell Jokes, is good, too. Angeline did learn to fit in in the end. I thought this book was out of print because I only saw it in a used book store!
