The Princess Must Marry

Princess Laurentia leads a fairy-tale life, attending glittering balls and wearing beautiful gowns. But after the ball is over, Laurentia finds herself getting into bed...alone. She dutifully agrees to choose a husband, but when she casts her eyes over her sea of suitors, she doesn't see a single man worthy enough to claim her.

But Who Will She Choose?

Then suddenly, she is swept off her feet by Prince Dominick, soldier of fortune, black sheep of his family...and the man hired to protect her. He's brazen enough to steal her kisses, yet tender enough to soothe her with one touch. He makes no promises, speaks no vows of forever...yet Laurentia can't help but hope that her prince has finally arrived.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Crown Princess Laurentia is 25, a widow, and a virgin. Her first marriage was a nightmare, and she's not anxious to repeat the experience, but she must marry and produce an heir to the throne. King Jerome adores his daughter and summons suitors from far and near to compete for her hand, determined that she shall marry for love to a man worthy of her. Neither Laurentia nor the King could have anticipated that the man who would make her heart sing would be Dominic of Baminia, the mercenary and bastard brother of the king of neighboring Sereminia. Laurentia fights Dominic's overwhelming sensual pull, for he's much too handsome and she has cause to distrust handsome, powerful men. Meanwhile, Dominic has a dark agenda that honor insists he fulfill, but despite his better sense, he finds himself falling in love with the petite, courageous Princess. Will Laurentia be able to forgive Dom's betrayal? Will Dom discover before it's too late that it's love and not just lust that he feels for the Princess?

In this sequel to The Runaway Princess, Dodd pairs a hard-edged, handsome mercenary with a lovely, wise princess and makes the match not only believable but also completely enjoyable. Both fast-paced and adventurous with passion aplenty and a warm supporting cast--as well as a satisfyingly evil villain--this heartfelt historical will not disappoint. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly

A bestselling author of historical romances, Dodd goes back to 19th-century European kingdoms Bertinierre and Sereminia (setting of The Runaway Princess) in this awkward fairy tale. Widowed Princess Laurentia needs a husband to ensure the succession to Bertinierre's throne, and suitors pour in from far and wide, including the mercenary fighter Dominic, illegitimate son of the last king of Baminia and the handsomest man in four kingdoms. Hired as Laurentia's bodyguard, while secretly in the pay of Bertinierre's chief foe, Dominic falls in love with the feisty princess and soon disavows his dirty dealings. The hot sex scenes and tantalizing romantic tension don't disappoint, but the story seems written in haste, with villains so transparent the reader will wonder at the collective royal IQ (perhaps the the result of too much inbreeding?). Readers become writers, and Christina Dodd has always been a reader. She reads everything, but because she loves humor, she likes romance best.

A woman wants things like world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants things like a Craftsman router with attachments, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will miraculously make his bald spot disappear. So when Christina's first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to quit work and write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?

Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before her first novel, CANDLE IN THE WINDOW, was published. In the twenty-two years since, her novels have been translated into 25 languages, won Romance Writers of America's prestigious Golden Heart and RITA Awards and been called the year's best by Library Journal. Christina Dodd herself has been a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle (11/18/05, # 13 Down: Romance Novelist named Christina.) Publishers Weekly praises her style that 'showcases Dodd's easy, addictive charm and steamy storytelling.'

Christina's 2011 releases include TAKEN BY THE PRINCE, #9 in the Governess Brides series, and in the tradition of Nora Roberts, a new romantic suspense series starting with SECRETS OF BELLA TERRA and REVENGE AT BELLA TERRA.

Christina Dodd is married to a man with all his hair and no Corvette, but many Craftsman tools.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing bordering on insulting, February 11, 2000

i devoured this book last night and was so freaked out by the end i came onto amazon to see what others were saying. i usually love ms. dodd, but i felt an alien finished the book that began so wonderfully. if a man betrays you and your country, lands you (a princess) in jail for a week, and foments a war, it is NOT romantic to have sex (in jail) upon his reappearance and forgive him the day after the fighting stops. it is insulting to any intelligent woman to consider this scenario acceptable. made the heroine seem worse than shallow and the hero smarmy. his motivations were so weak and his "redemptions" weaker in the scope of what he did. what tripe.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the Best Hero....but...., August 15, 2003

This book was about average for Dodd. This is only the second book from her that I have not enjoyed the hero. It would be helpful to you to read "Runaway Princess" before reading this book. It explains the background of Dominic a little better than this novel.

Princess Laurentia is looking for a husband so that she can continue her royal line. Dominic declares himself first her suitor, and then her bodyguard after a blotched kidnapping attempt. This book centers around the time of Laurentia's birthday, with most of the story moving within this time frame. Ultimately, Dominic is after a "secret" from Laurentia in order to gain financial wealth, but ends up falling in love with her in the process.

SOMEDAY MY PRINCE does not have a lot of charm. I did like the heroine, Princess Laurentia. She came across in a much more pleasant manner than the hero. However, it was hard to believe that Laurentia would forgive Dominic so easier for his betrayal. Ultimately, this book is worth the read, but don't be surprised if you are a longtime Dodd fan, and are slightly disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect romance book., August 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Someday My Prince (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a great romance book that I couldn't put down. I read it in one day. I like it when the two main characters are together for the whole book and not in separate places or parted by war or some other tragedy. It had totally likable characters and Dom was one sexy guy. The love scenes were hot, too. I'll read Christina Dodd any day and look forward to her next book.
