disappointing bordering on insulting,
By M. Linse (Rochester, NY USA) - See all my reviews

i devoured this book last night and was so freaked out by the end i came onto amazon to see what others were saying. i usually love ms. dodd, but i felt an alien finished the book that began so wonderfully. if a man betrays you and your country, lands you (a princess) in jail for a week, and foments a war, it is NOT romantic to have sex (in jail) upon his reappearance and forgive him the day after the fighting stops. it is insulting to any intelligent woman to consider this scenario acceptable. made the heroine seem worse than shallow and the hero smarmy. his motivations were so weak and his "redemptions" weaker in the scope of what he did. what tripe.

Not the Best Hero....but....,

This book was about average for Dodd. This is only the second book from her that I have not enjoyed the hero. It would be helpful to you to read "Runaway Princess" before reading this book. It explains the background of Dominic a little better than this novel.Princess Laurentia is looking for a husband so that she can continue her royal line. Dominic declares himself first her suitor, and then her bodyguard after a blotched kidnapping attempt. This book centers around the time of Laurentia's birthday, with most of the story moving within this time frame. Ultimately, Dominic is after a "secret" from Laurentia in order to gain financial wealth, but ends up falling in love with her in the process. SOMEDAY MY PRINCE does not have a lot of charm. I did like the heroine, Princess Laurentia. She came across in a much more pleasant manner than the hero. However, it was hard to believe that Laurentia would forgive Dominic so easier for his betrayal. Ultimately, this book is worth the read, but don't be surprised if you are a longtime Dodd fan, and are slightly disappointed.

The perfect romance book.,

This was a great romance book that I couldn't put down. I read it in one day. I like it when the two main characters are together for the whole book and not in separate places or parted by war or some other tragedy. It had totally likable characters and Dom was one sexy guy. The love scenes were hot, too. I'll read Christina Dodd any day and look forward to her next book.

Not so bad.,

I have read both books in the series, how they are suppose to go. And yes, Dominic was not a good guy in the first book, but was not all that bad. Not as bad as some villans. He sparked interest in what would happen to him and his book jumps up 13 years. So, he is not the same. He is more of a ruthless character that has had the bad end of the stick for his whole life. You get a good background of Dom in The Runaway Princess and then in Someday My Prince, you get more of his story which is not a good one at all. Dom has led a hard life and did what he had to do to get by. Because of his life, it makes him an ok hero. He had to learn the hard way, but instead of being a really bad apple, he tried to keep whatever honest qualities that he could and still live his hard life. That is why he gets so hung up on giving his word. When that is all you have it has to mean something. I liked that he had a depth to his feelings that was like a hidden well. He was not the average hero, but neither was his pain. He could have been worse then he was and done worse. He stillhad some morals. I liked it, gave it five stars and would reccomend it as well.

so I got this book and you know what its about from reading aboutfrom reading above so i wont't go into that. If you have read the runnaway princess you know who dom is. I am sorry but after what he did in that book how was I supposed to like him. Frankly I didn't start to like him here after what he does. It was a good read but not one of her best. I like this writer, and some parts of the story I liked.

*sighs with longing*,

I really should stop reading romance books..it just wants to make me fall in love but I seem to be failing to do that. I love this book by Christina Dodd...this proves that no matter how much you hate..there is still redemption and peace for those people.I truly recommend this lovely book..the story is enchanting...the two main characters are so complex that it just makes you want to peel them layer by layer...

Not as good as her other work.,

I found it extremely difficult to suspend disbelief in the matter of Dom, who was first introduced in Dodd's last book. It seemed as though his personality changed too swiftly in some aspects to be remotely believable and the chemistry between the two leads was not as strong as others of Dodd's books. A pleasant story but not one of her best.

Excellent historical romance,

In May 1829, the Crown Princess of Bertinierre, Laurentia, turns twenty-five. As the heir to the throne to the small Mediterranean kingdom, Laurentia worries that she must soon marry and produce the next generation. None of the aristocracy paying tribute to her beauty fits the bill of her prince. That lonely feeling changes when Prince Dominic arrives at court. Dominic behaves like a mercenary rather than royalty. However, in light of recent acts against his throne, Kin Jerome worries about the safety of his daughter. The monarch hires Dominic to protect Laurentia. For the first time in her life, Laurentia feels she has met someone who comports himself as her equal, not a slobbering servant. Soon they fall in love. However, Dominic insists that her princely mate will someday come, but that it is not him. Laurentia has her work cut out to prove to her bodyguard that he is her Prince Charming. Anyone who has had the pleasure of reading a Christina Dodd historical romance knows they have been treated to a royal novel. The books are always excellent. The great author's newest tale, SOMEDAY MY PRINCE, is a fabulous story that never slows down for a moment. The heroine is in trouble by enemy forces who want to control this strategic country. Under fire, her bravery, level-headedness, and kindness make her a magical character who will attain much acclaim for the author. Dominic is dangerous and intrepid, but loyal to his loved ones. These two protagonists take a well-written historical romantic intrigue and add humor, depth, and warmth. This combination turns the novel into a sure award winner for Ms. Dodd. Harriet Klausner

If this is your first time reading a Dodd book, pick a different one!,
This review is from: Someday My Prince (Mass Market Paperback)
I was so thoroughly disappointed in this book.
To be fair, I was enjoying this book for quite awhile. When it came down to the crucial turning point of the novel, my jaw fell open and I had to scroll back up to reread it--I thought my computer malfunctioned and I missed something very important. But no. I missed nothing. The hero of the story really did do what you spend the whole novel knowing he isn't going to do. I couldn't believe it. I was stunned. I couldn't help wondering, 'How in the world is Christina Dodd going to come back from this? I'm sure that she will, because the story is coming to its end, so SOMETHING's gotta give...' And I was very, very wrong. At the end of the day, it is not romantic if you have to give up your self-respect to be with a hero. That makes the man in the story not the hero--because with the hero, you don't do crap like that. The hero is supposed to be worthy of your love, and sure, he can be obnoxious and muck up the story line here and there, but in the end you can rest assured knowing that all will be well, and all's well that ends well, right? Wrong. This story proved that cliche quite wrong. Honestly, as I was reading the last several paragraphs--knowing that they were the last pages, so nothing more could be done--I was fully preparing myself for an unconventional ending, where the heroine tosses the hero out on his ear because to do otherwise would be an insult to womanhood in and of itself. Because... in reality, women sacrifice their self-respect for slimy men, but in romance novels, that is NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. If you've never read a Christine Dodd book before, PLEASE DO NOT START WITH THIS ONE. I've read most of her novels, and I've never been as shell-shocked as I was at this one's end. And for the people who argue, "She doesn't forgive him right away," I don't even know how to respond to that. He didn't ruin her favorite gown or get caught checking out her friend--his betrayal was not on a forgivable level. What he did was atrocious, and his reasons were self-serving and stupid. What do you expect us to do with a hero who puts his own pride before everything else, and a heroine who gives up all of hers to love him? |
