2.0 out of 5 stars Well...
Well...I'm not sure what to think about this book. I have really enjoyed Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove series as well several others she has written. This book felt very rushed. There was absolutely no tension or question about any of the relationships that develop in this story. Everything was very predictable and therefore boring. Oh well. I'm still looking forward to...

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant ...., September 7, 2008
I have enjoyed most of the Debbie Macomber books I have read and this was no exception. I was in the mood for something fluffy and light since the next book in my reading stack deals with a true life account of drug and alcohol addiction .... I defintely wanted something uplifting before tackling that ! I was very please with my selection.

Ms. Macomber's books are always a quick read and I read the first 200 pages in one sitting and finished it the next day. One of the things I like best about her books is that you end up feeling better about the world when you are finished and that was true with this one as well. I won't bore you with the story line since it is available in the product description, but I will share that the settings of San Fransisco and Montana provide a nice back-drop and allow the characters to change locations which moves the story along well. I also enjoyed the fact that one of the female characters is described as tall, large-boned, not particularly attractive and has a very strong personality and yet is written about very positively. She is the archtype to the small, delicate love interest yet is one of the people who finds love and happiness ...... what a pleasant deviation from most stories. She ended up being my favorite character!

If you enjoy Debbie Macomber books, I think you will like this one. It's perfect reading when you don't want to have to think too hard or you are in the mood to feel uplifted.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet G-rated romance novel, December 1, 2008

Some novels are so good you never notice the lack of love scenes but this one made you wonder if the main characters were from a hollywood 1950's world. The story was about 2 couples, the men were both soldiers for hire, the one women owned a knit store & was widow for 2 years and another a 30+ virgin physical therapist. This novel had merit the love stories had potential but in the end I did skim. I got this as a gift for birthday and it was safe gift (nothing it offended me).

So here is my advice if you are looking for safe G-rated book to read or give as a gift - give it a try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book, October 20, 1999

The book was moving. I actually cried (I hardly cry). However, I felt that the other characters like Bailey and Stan should get their own stories.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Macomber, December 8, 2011
By
Olene Quinn (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This is one of Debbie Macomber's better novels. The biggest issue that I had with it (and this is a common theme with her work) is that Linette gets involved with a man she knows is a mercenary and then whines endlessly about it. It's a bit like the Macomber book where the woman marries a rodeo cowboy and then freaks out because he goes to the rodeo. I just want to scream at them, "You knew what you were getting into!" I suppose it plays into a female fantasy of changing a man.

Anyway, this is an entertaining, romantic, quick read with a little action thrown into the mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming & gentle romance, January 26, 2011
I love historical romance, but I'm not a fan of explicit sex scenes. I usually don't care for contemporary novels, but I've been wanting to read something by Debbie Macomber for a while and chose this book as my first. I'm very pleased with it and am now eager to read the rest of the Deliverance series.

Linette Collins is a young widow with a lot of problems. Her husband of 2 years has been dead for 2 years and yet she can't bring herself to move on. To complicate matters, his parents are very much a part of her life, pushing her to dedicate her life to his memory. She works too hard and socializes too little, and when her sister in law invites her to a Christmas party, she accepts only out of obligation. Little does she know this is a turning point in her life, because Cain McClellan happens to be at the same party.

Cain is a mercenary, a hired soldier who engages in risky operations when the U.S. government cannot intervene. He risks his life without a second thought and prefers a life without family or complications. His attraction to Linette at his high school friend's Christmas party throws a kinkk in his plans, not that he's complaining.

This is a romance novel. The characters fall in love, and there is a "happily ever after" ending, as we expect. However, don't think there aren't any surprises. On the contrary, toward the end of the book is a very big unexpected event. Although the main conflicts are resolved, there's a mixture of romance, tragedy, action, and forgiveness to keep it balanced. The romantic dialogue seemed a bit trite at times, but there were enough sigh-worthy moments for me to overlook a bit of awkward dialogue. There are other characters with major story lines of their own as well. I loved the story of Tim and Francine. There were some truly hilarious moments with these two!

This book is what I'd call a PG romance. Sex is mentioned, as is quite a bit of innuendo, but there aren't any true sex scenes. (No worries about "bulging members" or "heaving bosoms.") Also, the characters only engage in sex after they are married. There have been a few reviews discussing the morality of the characters. I did not find it to be preachy in the least, but thought it only heightened the romance. This is a love story; not a lust story. Also, Cain is a strong male hero, while Linette is soft, small and feminine. Again, this is not a drawback to me. I didn't think it reflected 1950's ideals, but it is definitely more conservative than many books in the romance genre.

This is an entertaining, beautiful romantic novel. Linette is afraid of losing love again, and Cain is afraid of giving up even a small bit of control over his life. How these two characters from completely different worlds manage to come together makes for a very interesting story. I was interested in the descriptions of the operations from the Deliverance Company as well, and thought it was a very well-balanced novel. It's very enjoyable, and I can't wait to read more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay..., September 17, 2010
I will say this; Debbie Macomber does create realistic characters.

However, she always puts in something extra. Something unnecessary. Like Francine and whoever that other guy was. It took me a while to realize that their story was going to be continuing throughout the whole book. It felt like their story was also more written about, and it was really annoying because those two were really...ugh.
