5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out Terry McMillian!
Someone To Catch My Drift was a refreshing novel by a new author. Jacqueline Powell did an excellent job telling the story of two people in a relationship. I liked the way this novel was divided into the two main characters Nikai and Robert. At times I was on Nikai's side during their relationship other times I was on Robert's.

I felt like I knew Robert and Nikai...

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay read!
This book is full of drama but the aothor made things a little bit too obvious. She didn't give the characters a chance to show that they were more than just people looking for love in all the wrong places.

5.0 out of 5 stars Watch out Terry McMillian!, May 25, 2002

Someone To Catch My Drift was a refreshing novel by a new author. Jacqueline Powell did an excellent job telling the story of two people in a relationship. I liked the way this novel was divided into the two main characters Nikai and Robert. At times I was on Nikai's side during their relationship other times I was on Robert's.

I felt like I knew Robert and Nikai personally. Nika's mom was a trip and a half and she was also my least favorite character. She was always putting Nikai down and comparing her to her older sister Taylor who you will learn isn't any better than Nikai.

Jacqueline's "in your face" writing style makes her stand out above other authors. She is definitely up there with the best!

Nikai had alot of personal baggage that she brought to the relationship which made it harder for it to work. Robert was just being a man throughout the story.....he worked, tried to make their relationship the best, but when Nikai didn't pay him attention he ran to the arms of another woman by the name of Karen. Watch out for Karen in this book because she is something else! She has a secret that will blow you away!

I will definitely be reading more of this author's work and can hardly wait for her second novel to hit the shelves. Bravo and two thumbs up to Jacqueline you did an excellent job with this story! I HIGHLY recommend this book to book lovers -this is one that you definetly don't wanna miss!

5.0 out of 5 stars engaging African-American relationship drama, March 9, 2002
This review is from: Someone to Catch My Drift (Hardcover)
Her boy friend is in jail for seeing an underage girl and that leaves Nikai Parker so humiliated she cannot go to the mailbox, let alone work or talk with her family and friends. However, she feels perhaps the worst depression of her life not just because Travis is a no good brotha, but because she had their unborn aborted without any personal support three days ago. Her next door neighbor Sheila persuades Nikai that the humiliation is Travis' not hers and she needs a night on the town hitting the clubs. Reluctantly, Nikai agrees to an evening of clubbing expecting very little from the male crumbs she expects to meet.

To her shock, Nikai meets firefighter Robert Hayes, who is more than just handsome as he is the complete package of the caring hunk. They begin to see each other and fall in love leading Nikai to dream of a lifetime with the person she believes is her kindred soul mate. However, Robert is also seeing another woman who has plans for him that rival that of Nikai.

SOMEONE TO CATCH MY DRIFT is an engaging African-American relationship drama starring wonderfully complex lead characters. The story line is humorous yet angst-laden as Nikai struggles between her feelings and what Robert wants in their relationship. The metamorphosis of Nikai makes the novel hum when she has a catharsis that she must look within before looking without and concludes that her internal perspective of herself is painful. Jacqueline Powell's debut tale is a delightful novel that readers will enjoy for its clever and insightful look at everyday people.

5.0 out of 5 stars I luvd it!!!, October 12, 2003

This book was very well written. Ms. Powell's first attempt was more than just an attempt. She crafted this story beautifully.

I just love drama in fiction. I can't get enough of it, but my addiction was catered to with this novel.

The very first page got me with her boyfriend Travis going to jail for statutory rape.....dayum!!!!!!

This is not only a story of drama, but it has lessons in self-worth, self-acceptance, self-love and how to go for what you want no matter what others say around you or to you. Read the book, you'll learn something very valuable, I sure did.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT DEBUT............, April 30, 2003
By
This review is from: Someone to Catch My Drift (Hardcover)
and a good read! Meet Nikai....an aspiring singer with a boyfriend in jail who just cannot seem to pull her personal life together. In contrast, her sister Taylor seems to have it all; and Nikai just cannot seem to measure up.

Then along comes Robert....and it would seem as if everything is finally coming together for our heroine. Unfortunately, however, at this point there are WAY too many pages left. So read on, and you'll discover that ROBERT is in fact too good to be true, LUCKY may not be a lost cause after all, and TAYLOR....well, let's just say that "all is not as it seems."

Readers will root for Robert for a while...but WHO can resist Kalif? Certainly, as it turns out, not Nikai...

This book is chock full of drama...but not of the typical genre. Ms. Powell has managed to add a new twist to all of the usual escapades.....enjoy the book!

4.0 out of 5 stars I caught you drift..., April 22, 2003

I thought this was a really good book as a debut novel. I was able to relate to Nakia on many levels. At some point in all of our lives we are searching to identify with something or someone when in fact we need to create our own identity. Which is exactly what was going on with Nakia. Somewhere in the middle of the storyline the Author lost track, which kind of made it predictible. But in the end the point was made and Nakia did find herself. Good Start....

While I do appreciate the author's writing attempt, this book simply drifted on for too long. There simply was no reason why is should have been 400+ pages. The character developement was adequate but the plot was predictable and dragged on for so long that it simply became annoying. Perhaps on the author's sophmore attempt at writing she'll develope more of a plot and story line.

4.0 out of 5 stars I caught the drift!, January 22, 2003
This review is from: Someone to Catch My Drift (Hardcover)
Someone to Catch my Drift was an excellent debut novel for a first time novelist. The novel begins with Nikai an aspiring singer who is devastated from the news of her boyfriend being sent to prison as a result of cheating on her by dating someone underage. From this point on, Nikai has issues. Nikai then meets Robert, a handsome firefighter who sweeps her off of her feet. Nikai and Robert's relationship develops and as they grow, they began to drift. As they drift, Nikai and Robert both become someone they no longer love. Karen, a conniving woman sets out to destroy this relationship. Is their love strong enough to catch the drift? The twists and turns this books takes makes for a very interesting and thought provoking read. Although the author deals with typical relationship issues, I was very impressed by the development of the characters and some of the hard realities these characters face as it relates to being "real" and finding yourself. I am pleased with this attempt of this first time novelist to keep my attention and provide subjects that made me think. Keep of the good work and I would definitely recommend this book to book lovers. By Joy Fitzgerald, President & Founder

4.0 out of 5 stars You Caught My Attention!, April 30, 2002
This review is from: Someone to Catch My Drift (Hardcover)
As a first-time novelist, Jacqueline Powell has done a great job of retelling the cry of nearly every single woman. Someone to Catch My Drift is unique in its journey of searching for Mr. Right because this single woman cries tears of joy and pain when she learns where love is and where love isn't.

In her search for true love in a real man, Nikai catches her own drift when she embarks upon a journey leading to self discovery. You'll enjoy the ride as you travel with Nikai through moments of laughter, tears, anger, honesty, passion, and revenge. Nikai eventually discovers her real self as she finds true love in her family, friends, lover, and inevitably within herself.

Catch this entertaining page turner. I'm glad that Ms. Powell is working on her second novel!
