5.0 out of 5 stars Radio Edit Better
It seems like this upcoming album, as usual, has been years in the making. I heard "Someone Else Not Me" last summer in concert and didn't really appreciate it until I recently heard the faster, slicker radio mix. Then I was hooked. Doesn't look like they'll offer this version on the album, so best to get it now!

This is the second dire/dull single Duran have released since 1993's excellent "Ordinary World" ("Perfect Day" being the other one).

3.0 out of 5 stars why is this a single?, May 31, 2000
This review is from: Someone Else Not Me (Audio CD)
This is the second dire/dull single Duran have released since 1993's excellent "Ordinary World" ("Perfect Day" being the other one).

Some people lucky enough to have heard the new album already speak of this song as being the "Ordinary World" of the "Pop Trash" album. No it is not! It does not even deserve to be in the same sentence.

This song does has a lovely 'loser' sentiment as Simon sings about someone finding love in another and not him. Warren's guitar is as ever polished and perfect and we even hear a little of Nick playing a nice piano melody (although you do have to strain your ears to hear it). My complaint is not with the song itself, moving and moody as it is, but rather that it is not powerful enough to sustain a chart run. The use of "Starting to Remember" as the back up track is also strange. The two together give you the feeling that "Pop Trash" is a moody and reflective album. I do not think it is. I have heard "Lava Lamp" and "Playing with Uranium" on Hollywood records' site and other reviewers talk of the other tracks on the album as lively etc so why give this impression in the single?

Duran have made a career of releasing the wrong songs as singles ("Skin Trade" and "My own Way" spring to mind) whilst better, more powerful efforts are only heard on the album ("Vertigo" and "Of Crime and Passion" in particular). It galls me that they still get it wrong. Aaaahhhh!

The Radio Edit and the Album Edit are both fantastic! I LOVE THIS SONG! You will too! Turn the Album edit up really loud and relax to Simon's voice, it is incredible! ENJOY!

In my opinion, the CD Single "Someone Else Not Me" as well as the 2000 album "POP TRASH" will come to be regarded as hidden gems in the Duran pantheon in years to come. The full (album) version of SENM is a wonderful moving ballad with a strong melody, emotional lyrics, and outstanding production values by the band. It deserved better than to be buried by Adult Contemporary radio stations who regularly play "Ordinary World" and the band's 80's hits. The single edit version of the song is chopped in critical places IMO and this is probably the main reason why the single and the album failed. "Starting to Remember" is an intriguing b-side ballad track that also carries a lyrical punch but is less melodic than SENM. If you have doubts about POP TRASH, buy this first. It will allay your fears.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great single from one of DD's lesser known albums, December 2, 2011

I am really enjoying this single. Both versions of "Someone Else Not Me" (album and radio edit) are good songs, and I love "Starting to Remember". I would recommend purchase of this single, if like me, you are not that impressed with the sound of the rest of the album. These two IMHO are the best songs on Pop Trash. These songs do not sound dated to me, they seem timeless.
