When Anne's friend Kevin asks her to spend the summer at Grayhaven, his parents' new home in an isolated area of Pennsylvania, it seems like the ideal way to complete the book on contemporary literature they have been working on. And Grayhaven, an authentic medieval manor, proves to be nothing short of miraculous. Joined at Grayhaven by Kevin's recently-divorced Aunt Bea, and surrounded by amiable neighbors, Anne and Kevin quickly settle into a cozy. Easy routine. And that's the problem. Life at Grayhaven ahs become too comfortable. Anne's days are consumed with tennis and swimming, needlepoint and gardening, long dinners and pleasant visits with her new friends. At the end of three weeks Anne realizes that she and Kevin have not added one new sentence to their book. Try as Anne might, she can't seem to lure Kevin back to the project. Obsessed with the history of Grayhaven, he immerses himself in books on medieval architecture, often retiring to his room late in the afternoon without explanation. When Anne overhears a woman's high-pitched murmur in Kevin's room one night, she wonders at his secrecy. But when Anne catches a glimpse of this nocturnal nymph herself, she begins to fear for Kevin's life. What strange presence blows through the corridors of this ancient mansion, and is its intent to protect, defend, or destroy?
