In a novel of wit and haute cuisine, great chefs collectively bully greengrocers for the best produce and would rather starve than eat each other's cooking.

Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Take one rich, eccentric, morbidly obese gourmand; add a beautiful, sexy dessert chef; mix with them a fast-food entrepreneur; and you've got the fixings for a stylish treat. This audio presentation is the perfect blend of cooking, comedy and murder. George Segal's narration is strong, yet varied, and as stylish as the material. Segal makes the most of various accents and dialects. There's no question that his sardonic style enhances the humorous, sarcastic text. The recording is excellent in tone and clarity. For a tasty snack, this murder mystery will satisfy any craving. M.R. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

4.0 out of 5 stars a quick-witted 1976 comic novel, May 3, 2010

Most people probably know this book as the basis for the 1978 movie "Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" Indeed, the movie borrows the premise of the book and most of the characters, and much of the funny repartee, especially from the corpulent food critic Achille van Golk (called "Max" in the movie, and memorably played by Robert Morley). However, the movie changes the ending and eliminates a lot of the sexier material in the book, so even if you are familiar with the one, there is still reason to try the other.

I enjoyed this book when it was first published and carefully guarded my copy. Somehow over the years it went astray. Now that I wanted to read it again, I ordered and received a beautiful, vintage copy that I will not loan out.

The book is an entertaining trip through the world of the professional chef as they are murdered in unique ways. The dialog is entertaining and the characters memorable. The egos of the characters are almost too big to be contained within the volume. Hilarious, entertaining, a little informative, just fun!
