More About the Author

I've been writing, in one way or another, for as long as I can remember. I was always a big reader, mostly because my parents were. I used to get frustrated with my mom because she bought me books for Christmas when what I really wanted were the gifts my friends got, things like sweaters and jewelry. But I did love to read. When I was eight or nine my parents gave me an old manual typewriter and a little desk in the corner of our den, and I'd sit there and type up my stories. I was the kind of kid that people always sighed over and said, "She has such a wild imagination," which usually meant "I wish Sarah would try to stick to the truth." I have a tendency to embellish: I think it's just a weakness of fiction writers. Once you learn how to make a story better, it's hard not to do it all the time."The books I read when I was teenager, the good ones anyway, have stuck more in my mind than anything since. I still love books, but while I couldn't tell you complete plots of novels I read even six months ago, I do remember even the smallest descriptive details from Lois Lowry's A Summer to Die or Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. I think it was because back then books were still somewhat new to me, and when I found an author who seemed to say just what I was feeling, it really struck me and resonated. I hope that my books do that for the people who read them: I think it's the best thing to which any writer can aspire. "As far as my other life, my non-writing life, I live in the country with my husband, some lizards, and two dogs who are completely spoiled and rule me completely. I like to work in my garden---although I have not yet perfected the art of keeping everything alive----and, in my weaker moments, shop. I have a bit of an addiction to the Gap clearance rack, to be honest. I have this strange need to buy huge quantities of black pants. How many pairs of black pants does one person need? (Obviously for me, the answer is 11 and counting. But I digress.) What else can I tell you? I love Starbucks mochas but they make me way hyper. I subscribe to too many magazines. I make a mean bean salad. I could go on, but the truth is, my books are much more exciting than I am, and that's a good thing. It's always more fun to make stuff up anyway."

3.0 out of 5 stars One summer can change anything, October 25, 2002
This review is from: Someone Like You / Keeping the Moon Flip Book (Paperback)
Growing up and acknowledging that you are different from all the other girls your age is never easy, especially for Collie Sparks. Collie has spent most of her fifteen years moving from town to town, with her unbalanced and extremely hyper mother. Establishing friendships never came naturally for Collie. She was thought of as an outcast, due to her jet-black hair, lip piercing, and being overweight. Collie learned how to find comfort, from the cruelty of her peers, in food. When Collie's mom becomes obsessed with aerobics and begins producing infomercials, Collie has no choice but to lose weight too. Sadly enough, even after Collie loses 45 pounds, she is still unhappy with her image and lacks self-esteem. Collie's mom is offered a job touring Europe on an "anti-fat crusade." Consequently, Collie is sent to her aunt Mira's rural North Carolina town for the summer. She begins waiting tables at a local restaurant, and becomes great friends with Isabel and Morgan, two of her coworkers. Isabel and Morgan spend the summer teaching Collie that she is a beautiful person, both inside and out, and that she should not let anyone tell her differently.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two of Dessen's best in one big book, October 21, 2003

This review is from: Someone Like You / Keeping the Moon Flip Book (Paperback)
Both of these stories about teenaged girls, Halley & Scarlett in "Someone like you" and Colie in "Keeping the moon" held me captive. Sarah Dessens writing is refreshingly honest, and she is a highly respected writer for the genre. Ive never seen a bad review of her writing. I identified so well with all of these characters on some level. I was never pregnant, but one of my best friends was. These books suck you right in.

I highly recommend you buying this! I am glad I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars Someone Like You is Fantastico!, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Someone Like You / Keeping the Moon Flip Book (Paperback)
Being 16 and pregnant would be quit the roadblock in a young girls life. Without a good friend it would be hard to handle on your own. That's what this book is all about! That's the plot and the message of this book.

In this book Halley and Scarlett are best friends. Scarlett ends up getting pregnant wither boyfriend, Michael Sherwood. To put the icing on the cake, Michael dies in a horrible motorcycling accident, leaving Scarlett alone to defend for her self. But Halley never leaves Scarlett's side. They have their ups and downs but they stick together throughout the whole book; dealing with death, boys for Halley, high school and life.

My favorite part of the book is when Sarah Dessen goes in-depth on Halley and Macon's (Halley's boyfriend) relationship. Even though they did some things, they were fun and interesting to read about. Her description showed real life emotions and feelings of teenagers. There was romance, love, fighting, and relationships.

The message of this book is, you can't live without friends. Without friends, life sucks. Friends make life fun, interesting, and they make life easier. So be nice to people and make friends. Maybe you will get lucky enough to find a best friend. Also to wait to have kids till after you get done with high school. I really enjoyed this book. I would rate this book like a 4, 5 being the best and 1 being the worst. This book is romantic; it has drama, love, friendship, and high school. I didn't really find anything that I would change about this book. I would suggest anyone who loves a good chick flick kind of book; you should read, Someone Like You.
