Three Irish Girls Find Friendship and Romance,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
Author Cathy Kelly gives us three very distinctive women in this book. They all have their personal ups and downs and all are in need of a good friend/confidante. How fortunate that this is just what they find on a vacation in Egypt. They bond in the blistering Egyptian heat and, since they all live fairly near one another, continue the friendship once they are back in Dublin.Hannah is the insecure career girl who has been dumped by her boyfriend of ten years. Can a career replace her need for romance? Will one-night stands be enough to satisfy? Can the handsome actor who fancies her provide lasting happiness? Emma is a pathetic woman who even though married is being emotionally and verbally abused by her parents. When the tables are turned and a catastrophic illness causes them to need her, will she be there? Can she ever face the fears she has about not being able to conceive a child? Leonie is the flamboyant mother of three teens who touched me the most. She has to face flying to America to see her ex-husband marry the perfect woman while she herself is reduced to looking for love in the personal ads column. Share her joy and sorrow as each of these dates leads to even more problems. Will Leonie be able to referee life at home and still find satisfaction for herself? And just who is that mysterious neighbor who walks his two dogs? There's plenty of heart-touching situations in this one as three grown women find the courage to confront life's problems----the everyday ones and the major ones. After all, with friends like these, you know that hope and happiness is just around the corner.

Engaging!,
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
Hannah, Leonie and Emma stole my heart from the first pages of this wonderful book. I was immediately drawn into their lives, felt their pain, laughed alongside each of them and cheered them on to the finish.A chance meeting on an Eygptian vacation leads these three women into the world of true friendship. An unlikely threesome from the beginning, each woman discovers a deep and compassionate sisterhood that gives each of them the strength to deal with their own lives on a deeper level. This is my first Cathy Kelly book. I was very impressed by the depth of the character development and the insight that Ms. Kelly exhibits in her writing. I will be checking my book store for more of this author. Bravo!

One of those books you don't want to end!,
By P.J. Cross (Wilmington, NC USA) - See all my reviews

If you are a fan of Rosamund Pilcher and Maeve Binchy, you will be delighted to welcome Cathy Kelly to your library. Pour the glass of wine or cup of tea and enjoy your trip to Ireland. The characters and settings were wonderfully detailed and by the end of the book, you felt that pang that comes when a good book ends! I did become frustrated when the characters seemed to make bad choices over and over again - but then I also know many women who are exactly like that. I am delighted to add Cathy Kelly to my reading list and wish that we could get access to her previous novels that were released in the UK.

Recommended Summer Reading ......,
By Gerry-- (Bonita Springs, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Someone Like You (Hardcover)
....if you have nothing better to do. The characters were kind of cute and their settings were probably right on-- but the story as it unfolded, had its ups and downs. I found myself eager for this long read to end. It was not a book you simply could not put down. I put it down and walked away for several days and did not miss the story or the characters at all. But-- when you had time to fill, it was just "ok." I think I bought it because the book jacket had a comment from "Rosamund Pilcher" (one of my favorite authors). So-- there you have it-- if you need to grab a book to fill in some summer hours-- and you've read all the other good reads of the summer-- go for it-- but I would probably have gotten it at the library instead of springing for the full price.

Kelly does it well!,

This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
I was bought this as a present and as I hadn't read a Cathy Kelly book before I was dubious before reading it.... BUT I found it was great. It was an contemporary novel but still contained the old ingredients of a romance. The characters, Hannah,Leonie and Emma were all so different and so real to me that I felt the same as they did. I identified with all the characters, my favourite been Hannah. Once I had begun this book, I simply couldn't put it down and I felt sad for it end. I would definately recommend this book to anyone, and I would recommend Cathy Kelly, the narrative technique is brilliant and would read another of her novels. All in all a fantastic feel good read.

Ever been a three musketeer?,
By Amanda Beatty (WI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Someone Like You (Hardcover)
Someone Like You is an insigtful novel about an unexpected friendship between three very different women. A sisterhood develops between these women- each now has people who they can be themselves with without prexisting expectations and history that can cloud long-standing relationships. It Explores the ups an downs experienced during their search to find that something that is missing in their lives. During their search, they discover what they were looking for all along as well things that they didn't even realize were missing. It provides an honest and modern depiction of friendship and that search to make life meaningful. The author draws you in to the relationship between these women and into their quests for individual happiness. All human beings can relate to that quest. I truly had trouble putting this book down.

A lovely treat,

If you like Rosamund Pilcher or Maeve Binchy, check out Cathy Kelly. She writes in the same homey, heartfelt style that made me both laugh out loud and brought me to tears. "Someone Like You" is a cozy, contemporary British novel; the perfect accompaniment for curling up in your favorite chair or in bed with a mug of tea. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope Cathy Kelly's other novels will be published in the U.S. soon, otherwise I might have to splurge and buy them on amazon.co.uk.

I loved it!,

What was so wonderful about this book, aside from the basics: great plot, great characters, great development, were the characters themselves. There are three main characters in this book and I loved all three equally. Cathy Kelly did a wonderful job of letting the reader see each of these very different women as who they were, and yet also let us see how such different women could form such a strong friendship and bond. The pace of this book was very well done. Many authors skim over details and only focus on the big things...but not so with this novel. Cathy Kelly took her time, while all the while not creating a slow-read. Great writing!!

Simply wonderful,
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
There's a new crop of Irish authors gaining international success -- and Cathy Kelly is one of them. Kelly's literary debut in the US, Someone Like You, is an endearing story that centers in the lives of three rather different women. Hannah: a career-oriented, gym-obsessed beauty with a penchant for unreliable men. Emma: a happily married woman who hopes to have a baby. The doormat of a self-centered sister and a manipulative father, Emma's relationship with the aforementioned family members worsens when her mother suddenly becomes ill... Leonie: a middle-aged divorced mother of three children whose ordered life shatters when her ex-husband announces his pending nuptials. Having met on vacation in Egypt, these women stick together through the rough patches in their lives. Their togetherness makes for a poignant and endearing read. Cathy Kelly is a great literary voice that will capture readers' hearts. I recommend this wonderful novel. |
