After catching her sleazy husband Lyle in his office literally with his pants down, Jill is summarily fired from her law firm. Ever resourceful, she returns to her hometown of Los Lobos, where she takes over an eclectic law practice until she can find the perfect corporate gig. MacKenzie Kendrick has returned to Los Lobos also. The object of Jill's teenage crush, he returned to bring a little stability to his life after years of undercover work have left him on the edge and ever further from his daughter. In order to share future custody of Emily with his ex, he has to keep his nose clean as the new sheriff of Los Lobos. A hard proposition for the former bad boy turned lawman, whose biggest feat will be breaking down the barrier his daughter has established between them. Jill's last memory of Mac is her 18th birthday, where she waited in his bedroom and bared all with the intention of seducing him. He promptly threw up. The next time she was ready to bare all for a guy, Evan took one look at her and pronounced he was gay. Since Lyle did not throw up or have a sudden lifestyle change, she married him.

Mallery's writing is crisp and funny, the romance spicy, and her characters memorable. Add assorted quirky citizens including a tarot card reading aunt, mobsters, a secretary who doesn't want to put in a full day's work, and a cranky old man who wants to sue his neighbor over a fence built a century ago, and you have a riveting story about small town life that only Mallery could come up with. I cannot get enough of her books!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner from Susan Mallery, October 15, 2004
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
Susan Mallery's books are like fine chocolate or good wine, they're meant to be savored. I love that she doesn't rely on shock value to grab her readers. Someone Like You is not about who can blow up the most stuff or who does the most explicit/kinky sex scene. The characters, Jill and Mac, are people I could relate to, people I can picture living in my town.

I love Jill's and Mac's shared history, and the way they slowly fall in love. This is such a warm, wonderful book, a true love story that also deals with a lot of issues that readers can relate to like divorce, bumps in one's career, family.

I was so worried for Mac's little daughter, Emily, who is scarred from the past. I had tears in my eyes reading about her thoughts and doubts. But the book made me laugh, too, especially the sparkling dialogue between the two main characters.

By the time I was done with the book, I felt like I knew the town of Los Lobos and made friends with some of its citizens. An entertaining and delightful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jill & Mac??, December 1, 2004
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
Jill has come home in Los Lobos, unwillingly, but where else can she go? She and her *lying weasel rat-fink dog* husband have parted. She found he and his assistant in a compromising position at their office-no less and she was the one let go! Mac Kendrick has just been home a couple of weeks too--he's now the town sheriff. Jill still has her teenage crush on him but now she's ready to act on it for sure. Our H/h do have many obstacles to overcome to realize they should be together for always. Custody of Mac's 8 y.o. daughter is a big one, Jill's Aunt Bev and her new boyfriend, he's part of the Mafia, is another and Jill thinks she wants to be back in a big city not a little town like Los Lobos and Mac has come back to town on purpose he knows this is where he wants to be. Ms Mallery writes the best characters -- Mac & Jill have many flaws, just your ordinary mixed up couple, but I fell in love w/Mac but wanted Jill to have him. All the secondary characters are colorful and fun too. Ms Mallery introduces us to Riley and Gracie from the Mar '05 release FALLING FOR GRACIE and I can hardly wait!

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read, December 26, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is the first book I read from this author. From the first page, I was able to empathize with the heroine's feelings. I like the realistic progress of the relationship of the hero and heroine. I also like the heroine being portray as a strong career woman who can stand on her own, but still vulnerable and compassionate. The hero is caring and warm. I appreciate that their relationship progress naturally without the usual plot device of a big misunderstanding (thank goodness!) and they communicate with each other like the mature adults that they are. If this is the type of books I can look forward to from this author, then I am definitely onboard!

4.0 out of 5 stars An Independent Woman Finds Her Core, December 16, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a feel-good romance about Jill, a San Francisco lawyer whose husband betrays her and then takes the coveted job promotion she wanted while she gets fired. Jill returns to her small California hometown - in her huband's BMW - to lick her wounds and figure out her life. Coincidentally, her complicated high school crush, Mac, has also returned to their hometown to put his life back together. Mac moves in next to Jill and her aunt while he works as a sheriff and tries to repair his relationship with his young daughter. Unfortunately for Jill, he doesn't want the complication of becoming entangled with her.
Meanwhile, Jill temporarily takes over the law office for a local attorney who has recently died; his secretary makes no secret of her contempt for Jill. Amidst all of this, there is romance, intrigue and heated small-town politics. While the plot follows the typical romance formula, each of the characters has enough quirks and complexities to make this a fun read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice romance in a small town, December 12, 2010
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Very likable characters in a great small town setting. Like most small towns, the past is always present and influences the characters and situations. The secondary characters are generally as realistic as the leads. The story moves at a good pace and contains the emotional content to move it past average. I wasn't crazy about the outcome of one of the relationships; to me, it seemed out of character. That was the main reason for the 4 stars; it sounded a sour note in an otherwise very enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars legal thriller police procedural romance, September 29, 2004
This review is from: Someone Like You (Mass Market Paperback)
In San Francisco, attorney Jill Strathern goes to see her spouse, who practices law in the same office. However, instead of legal or family matters, she catches Lyle with his pants down having sex with his assistant. Lyle's blithe comment is that she should have knocked. Reeling from the unfaithfulness of the man who supposedly loved her, that afternoon her firm gives Jill the pink slip, something that her rat of her husband caused. Taking their communal property car that he loves, Jill goes home to Los Lobos, California to temporarily take over a local practice.

Former Los Angeles police officer Mackenzie Kendrick returns home following the death of his partner and the subsequent death of his marriage as his wife could not cope with the darkness that engulfs him to become sheriff. When Mac and Jill meet, an attraction heats up between them, but she remembers as a teen stripping in front of him only to have him puke. As they fall in love while trying to pick up the pieces of their respective lives, neither sees hope for a future together as he plans to stay while she plans to move elsewhere to apply her corporate law expertise.

SOMEONE LIKE YOU is an entertaining legal thriller police procedural romance starring two delightful protagonists who know that like years ago the timing is wrong. The story line focuses obviously on the growing heated love between the lead protagonists, but also provides the audience with a deep look at a small town legal practice and sheriff's department with a dose of small town justice. Fans will relish Susan Mallory's fabulously fervent romantic cozy.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This was the first book that I ready by this author. I enjoyed how realistic she made the charactors. Everything she does and feels is what I would be doing. It the fact that as I was reading the book, I feel like this could really be something that could happen real life. I enjoyed the charactors and how they delt with has happened in their lives. It is as if Susan Mallery found a real life story and wrote about it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasant, Small Town Romance, February 14, 2011
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
After catching her husband screwing the temp, corporate lawyer, Jill Strathern, finds herself without a husband, a job, or a home. Desperate for revenge and a chance to regroup, she lands back in her hometown filling in at the local law office. She quickly finds that the small town has more to offer than she expects. This is my first by Susan Mallery and the beginning was a bit slow. But once you adjust to the pacing, there's plenty to like about the cast of characters. There's a great feel for the small town. Each character is well developed and interesting and by the end I felt rather attached to them. I would have preferred a bit more conflict, but for the genre, this is a well told story that's quite enjoyable. In fact, I'm looking forward to reading the sequel, Falling for Gracie, which covers Jill's best friend and her old crush, who had an even more interesting history together.

4.0 out of 5 stars A quirky, fun romance!, February 10, 2011
By
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Susan Mallery is a veteran author of women's fiction and she definitely knows what she's doing. SOMEONE LIKE YOU is lighthearted and fun when, given the subject matter, two broken hearted people with an ouchy past, the book could have been a total downer.
Quirky characters, a wonderfully described setting, and descriptive emotions all work to pull you into the story.
If you're a romance reader, you can't go wrong with a Susan Mallery book, SOMEONE LIKE YOU is a prime example of that.
