Mr.Right is sometime right under your nose., August 25, 2003
This review is from: Someone to Love (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
In Alicia Wiggins Someone to Love, Claudia Ryland and Ray Elliott are best friends. Claudia, tired of being a bridesmaid and never a bride, sets out to implement a plan to find Mr. Right. It is not until Mark, a man that meets all of Claudia's requirements, comes into the picture that Ray soon realizes he loves Claudia and sets out to prove that he is Mr. Right. Ms. Wiggins has created an interesting story based on how real friendships between a man and a woman can lead to love. Claudia and Ray's friendship as well as the creation of sexual tension was well developed. Also the development of the importance of family was a definite theme that was well done. However, I was disappointed with the sub-plot involving Ray's ex-fiancé. She was brought in to be a distraction to Ray and I found the details of her life, beyond those that directly affect Ray, were not needed. The author also created a triangle (Mark, Claudia, and Ray) in which either man could have been chosen and the reader would have been ok with it. Because there was not a clear "hero", it resulted in over-the-top drama used to expedite an anti-climatic and predictable decision thus taking away from the suspense of whom she will choose. Someone to Love is under Genesis Press' Indigo Imprint, which proclaims "elegantly woven love stories with intriguing plots intertwine the nuances of African-American culture, bringing to light the fantasy of true romance with characters of depth, intrigue and seduction." Despite this reader's misgivings this novel delivers that and is a recommendable read. Kotanya APOOO Bookclub

2 and 1/2 stars, August 28, 2005
This review is from: Someone to Love (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
Claudia and Ray have been best friends forever. Claudia sees her friends all getting marries and starting families and decides that she wants this too so she commits herself to looking for a man that she can love- never realizing that Ray is in love with her. Claudia meets a good man- Mark and then realizes Ray's feelings for her and she has to make a choice between them. This book does a good job of exploring her feelings of being torn between 2 men. It also does a good job of showing her conflict over not wanting to risk losing Ray as a friend if the love relationship did not work out. Because of the issues involved, the issues that Claudia faces are very realistic and made this story very easy reading since I was not rolling my eyes every 5 minutes. Three complaints: First, Ray's ex-fiance comes back to town and way too much of the book is taken up exploring her issues. I would have been happier not knowing and understanding her issues and instead just seeing her as the wicked witch of the story. Also, there was no reason for so much of her backstory since it did not further the romance between Ray and Claudia. Second, the ending was way too abrupt. We are in the middle of Claudia's torment and then wham- something happens, she makes a decision and then the book is over. Way too abrupt and way too convenient. The author did an awesome job up until this point. The third complaint is that in a romance novel, I prefer a little more romance. This book was seriously lacking in that department. Now, I am glad that Claudia was not sleeping with both guys at the same time but at the same time, there was no passion shown between her and either man. This book was okay but I was easily able to put it down several times to do other things and I felt little urgency to get back to the story when I did pick it back up. Two and 1/2 stars would have been my grade if Amazon had half stars.

Eyes wide shut., September 26, 2003
This review is from: Someone to Love (Indigo: Sensuous Love Stories) (Paperback)
Claudia Rydell keeps the facade of a smile on her face as once again she is a bridesmaid and not a bride. She looks around for her best friend Ray, they had attended the wedding together. Since her smile is waning, she is ready to go home. Once there, Claudia sits pensively, deciphering her feelings and thinking that some changes are due in her life. She devises a plan; a list of attributes she will use to grade the men she meets so she will know immediately if they are acceptable suitors. Ray hates the idea, but since he and Claudia have been platonic friends since they were 10 years old, he doesn't know how to tell her why he begrudges it. For a few years now Ray has been having visionary creations about Claudia, every time he closes his eyes. But, he's afraid a failed relationship will destroy their friendship. The adage, 'can't see the forest for the trees' is personified in this story as they continue to overlook the obvious. But a new love interest for Claudia and an ex-love interest of Ray's may be the catalyst needed to escalate their status beyond that of best friends. In SOMEONE TO LOVE, Alicia Wiggins has taken a predictable scenario and created a sensitive and entertaing story. The characters are believable and the predicament has just the right touch. This a quick, easy read. Reviewd by aNN of The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
