Soundtrack / Not A Soundtrack, December 26, 2004
This review is from: Somersault (Audio CD)
When they first received their rough cut of Somersault, scenes of the snow-covered hills around Jindabyne, (near the ski resorts of Thredbo and Perisher in Australia's Snowy Mountains), thrilled Decoder Ring with the prospects of the music they could match to the images. In quick order they received an AFI (Australian Film Institute) award for Best Original Score, and a Best Original Song award from the Screen Music Awards, for the film's title track.
For the larger part of its running time, Somersault is very minimal in execution, beautifully capturing the vulnerability and youthful naivety of the film's star, Heidi, and Decoder Ring have captured that youthful, edgy naivety beautifully. Despite the title, one of the most exquisitely lovely tracks here is `Rough Sex', others including `Alpine Way' and the Eno-esque `Electrocution (Hydro mix).
It's sometimes tempting to program out Lenka Kripac's two guest vocal numbers, (`Somersault' and `Music Box'), for their intrusion on the filmic nature of the other tracks, but really, it's all quite, quite lovely.
Instrumental bands are booming in Australia at the moment, with Sydney acts such as Decoder Ring and Prop, plus Melbourne's fabulous Silver Ray, and while they may all have built their success on the past glories of bands such as the Dirty Three and the Necks, there's no denying that the modern crop are really coming up with the goods.

Just about perfect, May 4, 2009
If you are like me and enjoy a musical curtain while you work or study to close off all the other thoughts that distract or lead to procrastination, then you need to pick this one up. A soothing and contemplative soundtrack, to a contemplative and disturbing film (which is still highly recommended), then celebrate with a somersault and purchase this Decoder Ring record.

Gorgeous!!!!, April 22, 2005
This review is from: Somersault (Audio CD)
This ablum is sweetly and hauntingly beautiful. Saw the movie, loved it, and realised when I was watching it that the score was adding SO MUCH to the movie. Brought the soundtrack right away and was blown away as I am new to Decoder Ring. I have listened to this cd hundreds of times since then and cannot wait to get their upcoming new album. For lovers of Sigur Ros, Radiohead, this album is a must-have. I could even hear traces of Hans Zimmer in places. The music is delicate, evocative, moody, poignant and takes listener on emotional and reflective trip. Amazing stuff.
