Insightful,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
I must start by saying, I had no real desire to read about a misguided young women in crisis who some how can justify dating another woman's husband. I was surprised by what I read. I read a very insightful novel, that was well written, entertaining and also taught real leassons about choices. In Genie I found a young women who was the product of a very unhealthy upbringing that caused her destructive behavior. I found in David a typical vain male person who needed reassurance that he was the same man he had been over two decades ago and in his quest to find himself he fells to consider how his actions will affect others in his life, which is usually the case when an indiviual is running scared. And after all was said and done. Who will pick up the leftover's David didn't need anymore. This book is a must read. Because we all can benefit from the lessons to be learn when one is blinded by self doubt and all the others his actions affect.

SOMETHIN' EXTRA IS SOMETHING ELSE!,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
SOMETHIN' EXTRA IS SOMETHING ELSE!Ms. Rice has penned a blessing. Mid-life crisis, dating and falling in-love with married men, workaholism, alcoholism, child molestation and sexual abuse, parenting of middle-upper class teenage African-American males in a hip-hop culture... the list of issues goes on. However, Ms. Rice doesn't meander or lose focus. Her work is tight, enlightening, funny, sad, and altogether lovely! As one other reader suggests... "any young woman(or older) thinking of getting involved with a married man, should definitely read this novel." Ms. Rice you also have the makings of a wonderful "relationship film." Director/Screenwriter, Malcom Lee (Best Man), 40 Acres and a Mule Productions, would really do your story/novel justice on the Big Screen! Looking forward to seeing the movie!

This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
This is one of the best books I have read. I typically read 4 or 5 books a month, so I know what I'm talking about. You will not want to put it down. You will want to know what happens to David and what happens to Genie. Everyone should read this book. I can't wait for Patty Rice's next book. This book is excellent!

What's Love Got To Do With It--EVERYTHING!!!,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
At the start of this story, I thought it was just filled with that tired, sistah girl banter, that I've grown so accustomed to and weary of. But then I decided to turn a few more pages and guess what? I started to CARE about these characters. I was caught up in Genie's relationship, her feelings and, check this, I could relate to the man's point of view as well!!! I felt that man's love, and his pain touched me. Like Terry McMillan, Patty Rice does an excellent job in portraying what's inside the male mind. I think Genie wanted to know: What's love got to do with it, and she found out--EVERYTHING. There was a lot of extra's in this dramatic, love story. I look forward to Ms. Rice's next endeavor.

Amorously Awesome,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
Somethin' Extra was a delightfully spun tale. The characters were so well developed, that I could actually feel their pain, and celebrate their euphoria. The novel flowed quickly, getting straight to the point. We weren't bombarded with sundry descriptions, but Patty provided enough detail to let our minds visualize the rest. I loved the interweaving plots and spunky characters. I'm going to recommend this book for our book club. Good job Patty.

Been there,
By "1belle" (bklyn, ny United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
Patty Rice is at the top of my favorite new author's list. Genie is every woman who has been single and going through relationships in their twenties. David is that fine fine man who taught us all a lesson. This book was real to me. I'm always afraid to write too much and give the book away. But here goes, David was suffering. Genie was suffering. Fate had them both working at new jobs at the same place and time. You keep turning the page because you know what's going to happen although it seems innocent and "something extra" might not happen. But if you've been there (either in person or through a friend) you have to read this. Start it on Friday - Sunday it will be finished.

Had the potential to be a lot better....,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
In the beginning of this novel, Patty Rice introduces the main character (Genie Gatlin) as a woman who sees straight through men and the games they play and uses them as a tool for her own gain. Later on the author shows the reader that Genie's nonchalant, loveless attitude for men is actually a lifestyle she's chosen because of her pass. Ultimately, Genie is heartbroken and and realizes that she needs to change her self-destructive behavior. Overall I enjoyed this book. It was really well written. It was set in the DC Metro area (where I live). Although I liked this book, I think the author could have given us a more detailed picture of Genie getting her life back together rather than focusing so much on her pain and struggle. I was satisfied with the ending but I would liked to have seen more of the events leading up to it. You'll see what I mean if you decide to read this one. I don't want to give it away. Happy Reading!

In the Spirit of a Young Woman's Life,
This review is from: Somethin' Extra : A Novel (Hardcover)
SOMETHIN' EXTRA truly makes the reader feel as if she's going through all of Genie's trials herself. I was amazed at how much of her heartache and joy I felt by looking at life through Genie's eyes. I also enjoyed the fact that Patty Rice flipped back and forth from Genie's point of view to David's point of view because it kept things in perspective. This book is perfect for anyone, no matter if they're married or single, a younger woman or an older man or whatever. I would recommend this book even to people that don't like to read because you don't even feel like you're reading a book; you feel like you're going through something extra. |
