EXCLUSIVE - Inspiration Behind "Walking"

Biography

Fearless. That one word eloquently captures the creative spirit of groundbreaking duo Mary Mary. Ever since siblings Erica Campbell and Tina Campbell broke through in 2000 with the pioneering crossover hit “Shackles (Praise You),” the chart-topping sister act has never wavered from defying convention to fulfill its mission: sending uplifting messages through music and words that ... Editorial Reviews

SOMETHING BIG is the sixth album from groundbreaking duo Mary Mary. With powerful voices that soar, harmonies that chime and empowering lyrics, the songs on SOMETHING BIG are instantly memorable. From the lively lead single Walking, to the unforgettable anthem Never Wave My Flag and title song Something Big, Mary Mary is on course to drive their indisputable reputation smack into the mainstream. Billboard Magazine s recent review of Walking stated The song s synthesizer-accented, percolating rhythms are immediately arresting, and the mix is seamlessly strung together by the engaging vocal interplay... Walking is the pair s latest track to leave the listener with a bounce in his or her step.

As songwriters, Mary Mary's honesty and passion are unmatched by most contemporary storytellers. Mary Mary's lyrics underscore an unwavering faith and belief in God to conquer the challenges that life sends our way. It is that faith that has connected with fans around the globe and secured an even wider fan base that continues to grow each day.

"In life, we all need to believe in our inner strength to endure the unexpected, to face challenges which confront us, and ultimately survive; we are living in difficult times, but there are infinite reasons to be hopeful," say Erica and Tina.

During their career, Erica and Tina have sold upwards of five million albums. In a remarkable and still ongoing story, Mary Mary's 2008 release, The Sound topped multiple charts and broke several records. A string of awards, including 2 Grammy Awards, an American Music Award, a BET Award, a Soul Train Award, and an NAACP Image Award, among others were racked up for the album.

Mary Mary have made it their life's mission to connect with people all over the world. It s not just about musical achievements, awards, charts and sales, say Mary Mary. That s not our guiding light. It s about helping people...we re committed to our message and purpose.

2.0 out of 5 stars "Something Missing" April 12, 2011
Format:Audio CD
I have purchased all of the previous CD's by one of my favorite groups Mary Mary. This CD is definitely a disappointment. It seems to lack the heart, soul, and conviction of their previous musical offerings. The songs all seem to mimic in some form, a popular secular song or artist. Instead of heartfelt songs of faith and encouragement, the tracks feel contrived and gimmicky. The two ladies are talented beyond measure, and have so much more to offer than this CD delivers. Change and growth are good, but I would caution the Mary's not to forget the sound and the message that made them such powerful and popular voices for God's love and comfort, and not to try so hard to imitate the secular artists of the day. They have a special gift given to them by God. This CD does not showcase their immense talent. It feels uninspired and disingenuous.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Not What I Expected March 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am a true Mary Mary fan but this CD left me scratching my head. The only two songs that I truly like are It is Well and Walking. The CD leans heavily on "dance track" music and lacks the gospel feel of their other CDs. I will continue to purchase their music but I hope that the next CD is better than this. It pains me to even write this review becasue I love the music of Mary Mary .

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS album should be the one title INCREDIBLE!!!! April 4, 2011

Okay - I'm not a big Mary Mary fan. In the whole time they've been out, they have about three songs that I like, and didn't RUN to the stores/itunes to buy even them. I don't know what happened on this recording - I don't know if they are under new management or working with new people or what - but this is the only album in my entire Gospel collection that I can sit and listen to the WHOLE thing without having to push skip not one time, and I got everybody from Shirley to Richard Smallwood to Deitrick to Tye to all those different Winans groups to the Boys Choir of Harlem! There are only two songs that I don't absolutely love, and I can even sit through them comfortably because the rest of the album is sooo tight. Now - no - if you're looking for traditional praise and worship speak in tongues Gospel (which I also love and have plenty of in my collection), THIS IS NOT THE ALBUM FOR YOU!!! You will hate it. But if you like a mix of different flavors with your gospel music sometimes, you will love it. You got your funk with a lil country/honkytonk undertone on your opening tune, you got dance, you got urban/r&b, there's autotuned acapella, neo soul, rock, some slight tribal, and even had the nerve to have a drumline on one cut. It really is their best work yet so far to me, by far. My very favorite artists are Fred Hammond and Kim Burrell with members of the Winans clan as a close second, but my ablum with the most cuts on it that I like - 10 outta 12 and can tolerate the whole album nonstop - I gotta say it's Mary Mary Something Big!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm.... April 27, 2011

I'm at a loss for words. I normally love Mary Mary and was so excited to get this album. I had to choose between this one and Kirk Franklin and I quickly chose this one. Big mistake! Something is missing..it doesn't sound like them, it doesn't feel like them. I can't explain it. But I'm really disappointed. I hurts to write this but it's the truth. I can only think of two songs on that whole CD that I like.

1.0 out of 5 stars What's "Relevant" & "Hype" Versus What "Delivers" April 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
After listening to clippets of Mary Mary's cd, I have decided not to purchase this cd.
In this season of my life when I'm wanting to grow closer and closer to the Lord and away from the life I use to live not so long ago apart from Christ (clubbing, partying, etc), I find myself with a hunger for pure Gospel music.

I understand we're in the 21st Century and a lot of people are gearing toward that which "sounds" good or 'tickles' their ears with the beats and 'inspirational' lyrics, but I'm hungry for PURE WORSHIP and music that ushers me into the VERY presence of the Lord.

After hearing songs like "I Give myself away" and "Nobody Greater", my perspective has changed. Mary Mary and other artist may sell cds but what matters most is the GOSPEL message of deliverance and setting captives free. I just want to be holy. Not holier than thou because if someone saw how my life was BC (before Christ) they'd be amazed that I'm still here.

Music has played and continues to play an important part of my life. I only wonder where the true GOSPEL is. the GOSPEL is the death, burial and resurrection of JESUS. I'm just hungry for something that most of these artist are not giving me. They provide the beats and the music but where is the substance. I can only speak for myself. In times like these, give me JESUS. NO hype, no "phat" beats, sub-par lyrics...NO MORE!

MINISTER to me! OUT with the entertainment! BRING OUT THE TRUE GOSPEL ministers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacks Real Substance August 17, 2011
Format:Audio CD
CD has a few feel good songs but lacks real substance, continuity and growth as an artist. They are expanding their watered down message but not maturing as artists which does explain why the last couple of albums are so choppy/detached from one another and feel more experimental (let's try this) and less focused and spirit lead (God has us here in this season). I love Mary Mary but can't place their identity anymore which is so critical when you are trying to cross over. Praying they find their true selves again and know there is always a price to compromise.
