Book Description

October 1, 2005
In Memphis, Tennessee, wealthy, fair-skinned Grandmother Agnes bears emotional scars from when she attempted to pass for white. Fifty years later, because of a past tenuous link, the backlash is heaped on struggling, dark-skinned MaMary. As a result, their granddaughters, Patricia and Idella, are caught in the middle of a vicious trap of skin color consciousness and economic prejudice. So desperate is Agnes to rid herself of her pain and secure her family’s bank account that she hatches a cruel scheme to destroy MaMary and crush Idella’s dreams. But hope shines when MaMary's gift to Idella, a knowledge of African beading, becomes their saving grace.

4.0 out of 5 stars No such thing as "just one more chapter...", March 15, 2006

I enjoyed this book very much, and like the other reviewer thought I would read just one more chapter before going to bed... But one more, turned into another, and another...as I couldn't wait to read what happened next!

Ms. Snoe creatively weaves a story that provokes both thought and emotion through the examination of interpersonal relationships. The story's main thread examines intra-racial prejudice and class structure within the African-American experience...a phenomenon which I never expected would exist. Adding depth to the story, a secondary theme explores the power some people can have over the lives of others...how easily someone's trust can be taken advantage of to so dramatically negatively impact the lives of others, and yet how trust, when properly placed, can positively impact one's life.

Through it all, Ms. Snow reminds us how personal growth tends to come from enduring difficult experiences and of the resilience of the human spirit, especially when firmly grounded.

I'm a great fan of Ms Snoe's books, and this is one of her best! Thinking I would read a little before I went to sleep, I found myself unable to put it down until I finished it. I had no idea how this plot could be untangled.
Great Story, and an enlightening view of a subculture most people are unaware of.
I highly recommend SOMETHING DEEP IN MY BONES.
