Book Description

WARNING: THIS IS AN EROTIC M/M ROMANCE. THE BOOK CONTAINS FRANK LANGUAGE, ADULT SITUATIONS AND GRAPHIC SEX.
An Unhappily Married Man
Michael Maguire's love life has always lacked ... something. His wife is cold, his children are distant, and he's desperate for one night of self-indulgence. One night of real pleasure. So he heads to notorious Brixton Park seeking a prostitute, so cut off from his own needs, he isn't even sure of his type.

A Rent Boy

James Campbell is one trick away from life on the street. Trapped in the world's oldest profession, he long ago gave up hope of breaking free. When he sees Michael on a park bench, he doesn't take no for an answer. James is certain he can provide all the distraction a miserable, repressed man needs.

Something Different

That first night leads to an affair so deep, so honest and challenging, neither Michael nor James can predict its end. Each tryst brings them a little closer, sampling every kind of pleasure until nothing is off the table. Not even love.

"I especially enjoyed Ms. Reid's ability to paint complicated and sometimes poignant word pictures with only a few phrases." -- Kaetrin, Kaetrin's Musings

Something Different is Perfectly Named

Michael is a bored and frustrated heterosexual married father. James is a beautiful and cynical rent boy. A sexual encounter becomes a romance.

If written by a less talented author, this story could have been as cliched as a daytime soap opera, but S. A. Reid has created real and very likable characters. Their individual growth and evolution is as authentic as the development of their relationship. The result is a book that is nothing short of beautiful in its honesty and tenderness.

If you're tired of sentimental romances whose story lines are totally predictable, try Something Different.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Different is something else! November 23, 2011
By M White
Format:Kindle Edition
My first impression of this story as I began to read was that it was an erotica story, but different from so much erotica that I've read because of the well-developed plot and skillful way that it's written. I realized as I read further that it was so much more than that. Something Different is a heartwarming tale of personal courage and self-discovery, written in a style guaranteed to capture the heart of even the most skeptical reader.

Michael is an unhappily married man who goes looking for `something different' one night, expecting to pay a woman for sex. To his surprise he finds James, a handsome young man who offers his services instead. Michael's life changes that night. He embarks on a journey of self-discovery, discovers real love for the first time and learns to be honest about who he really is. It gives him the courage to face and conquer horrors from his past that he had always kept hidden.

James is a young man who was never given a chance from early in life and ended up in a life of prostitution. The night he picks up a shy married man from the suburbs, his life changes as well. He learns how it feels to have someone truly care about him instead of just using him for sex. Michael gives James the chance nobody else would and gives him the opportunity to turn his life around.

Readers who are turned off by graphic male-on-male sex scenes may be inclined to bail out of this book early on without bothering to finish it. Those readers would be missing out on a wonderful story. If you're looking for something different in an erotic romance, this is it!

4.0 out of 5 stars An 'all in one sitting' read - and a great one! November 14, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Something Different was indeed something different for me. I rarely read M/M Erotica and haven't read an M/M story that was novella/novel length before now but the blurb was interesting and I knew the author was eloquent so I was more than happy to take a look. I decided to have a quick read of the first 20% and make sure it was right for me before I added it to my `To Be Read' pile, so I took a seat with a cuppa and my laptop.

And there I stayed, right up until the final paragraph.

There were several things that drew me in. As I say, I knew the author was eloquent and the writing in Something Different didn't disappoint me on that score. It flowed well, keeping a rhythm that kept the story moving along at an exciting pace but still allowed a little time for reflection in between major scenes. Additionally, the novel is set in the UK. I have nothing against US writers or books in the slightest but as a British girl it's great to fall into a book that is full of the areas I know and love and the terminology I'm so used to.

The story between Michael and James begins as one which revolves around sex but for a relatively short read, Reid manages to inject a great deal of drama into the novel and all told there are areas of it that go well below skin deep, touching on aspects such as abuse, violence and sexually transmitted diseases. Perhaps what makes the book work so well is the genuine affection that is allowed to develop between Michael and James: this in itself makes any sex scenes much more effective as the book develops.

All in all, this was both something different and something brilliant from a fine writer with a superb grasp of language and an excellent understanding of how to use humour, sadness, anger and romance to bring a book to life. In the absence of a 4.5 scale, I have to go for a 4 but I was so very nearly tempted to grade up. Either way, this is a great read!
