Arising from concerns about children who are underachieving or presenting behavioral difficulties, this book outlines a number of useful approaches for teachers and others to use with individuals, small groups and classes. The book adapts and interprets an art therapy approach which can be used by non-art therapists as well as those practising in the field. Its approach is designed to be used in a variety of settings, such as in schools, special needs education, counselling, speech therapy and youth work. The applications are suitable for addressing a wide range of concerns, such as: bullying and harassment; breaking negative cycles of behaviour in groups; communications skills; social skills; promoting self-esteem; pastoral care; the specific needs of individuals. The approach has been trialled in school setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars an excellent resource, August 18, 2000

This review is from: Something to Draw On: Activities and Interventions using an Art Therapy Approach (Paperback)
As an art therapy intern I have found myself constantly looking for new directives and activites to use with my adult substance abuse population. The title of this book hooked me immediately and I anxiously awaited its arrival. I must say that when it finally arrived I was quite disappointed to see that its content was designed for interventions with children. It would have been helpful if that detail could have been provided befor ordering. After suspending my judgement, however, I found that it contained a wealth of activities that could easily be used as a springboard for adaptation to diverse populations and treatment issues. Ross has done a fantastic job in compiling and presenting a broad range of activities. This book would be essential for anyone working with children. It is also a tremendous asset for anyone willing to use some creativity and adaptibility. Beyond its technical significance the degree to which the author's approach honors the children she works with is tangible in her writing and presentation. In this sense the book is a success not only for its practical application but also for its ability to inspire.

3.0 out of 5 stars School Counselor, July 3, 2006
This review is from: Something to Draw On: Activities and Interventions using an Art Therapy Approach (Paperback)
When I bought this book I was looking for more ideas about how to use art therapy in a school setting. The book gives you some ideas, but not as many as I hoped (about 4 per theme). I feel that the book isn`t that deep either. A good book for starters, but I don`t feel you can run art therapy sessions based on this book.
