5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album From A Modern Master
If you've ever had the good fortune to see STRICLY BALLROOM, ROMEO + JULIET or MOULIN ROUGE, then you've been exposed to the pure visual and musical genius that is Baz Luhrmann. This pre-MOULIN ROUGE album covers a wonderfully wide range of music - mainly original and remixed music from Luhrmann's first two films, two of his theatrical productions for the Australian Opera...

1.0 out of 5 stars a one song CD
I guess I got what I was looking for: the sunscreen song. However, I thought the rest of the CD would have music that wasn't just slapped together from other artists. Even those selections would have been better if more quality artists and songs were selected. I tried to find this in a single song selection but was told that the entire CD was all that was available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Album From A Modern Master, February 28, 2003
This review is from: Something For Everybody: Baz Luhrmann (Audio CD)
If you've ever had the good fortune to see STRICLY BALLROOM, ROMEO + JULIET or MOULIN ROUGE, then you've been exposed to the pure visual and musical genius that is Baz Luhrmann. This pre-MOULIN ROUGE album covers a wonderfully wide range of music - mainly original and remixed music from Luhrmann's first two films, two of his theatrical productions for the Australian Opera (LA BOHEME & MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM), his production of HAIRCUT for the Sydney Theatre Company, and music from LAKE LOST.

Fans of STRICTLY BALLROOM will again recognize the original versions of Doris Day's classic "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps" and Stanley Black's "Os Quindos De Ya Ya" as well as remixed versions of "Happy Feet," "Love Is In The Air" and Tara Morice's "Time After Time." ROMEO + JULIET lovers can hear fantastic remixed versions of "Young Hearts Run Free," "Everybody's Free," "When Doves Cry," and "Angel."

The real treat for Baz Luhrmann fans, however, are the tracks from and inspired by his works for The Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian Opera. They range from the purely operatic "Che Gelida Manina" from LA BOHEME (which has since been brought to Broadway) to the fantastically funky electronic "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In" from HAIRCUT.

If you've ever seen and loved a Luhrmann film, you shouldn't be disappointed by this fantastic album. It celebrates the works you know and love and introduces you to this modern master's other, equally wonderful works.

I will admit it that I, too, bought this CD for the Sunscreen song. I mean, c'mon, who had really heard of this artist? But after listening to this CD once, I was hooked. The pomp and circumstance this CD reveals is right up there with any classic dance album. Check out different versions of The Cardigan's "Lovefool" and Prince's "When Doves Cry," and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." They give the original songs a run for their money. And the mixture of original tracks infused with remixes is wonderful. One listen to Doris Day's "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps," and you will find the meaning of rejected love! The songs mostly come from the films that Buz directed, Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet. And if you haven't seen Ballroom, you are missing out! This CD is more than the sunscreen song, so take a gamble, you will be amazed the purchase will redeem itself in your CD carosel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Set from Rennaisance Man Baz!, April 8, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Something For Everybody: Baz Luhrmann (Audio CD)
Baz Luhrmann is a triple threat. The man can write and direct trend-setting films like "Moulin Rouge" and "Strictly Ballroom" stage amazing theatrical works of art (La Boheme) and even adapt a college graduation speech into a doozy-rap single featured here. He can literally invent "Something for Everybody" and this collection of familiar tunes is more than a novelty act - it works as a fascinating, percolating fusion of styles and genres. Disco-era classics like "Young Hearts Run Free" and "Love Is in the Air" are transformed into something much much more than their orginal counterparts - here, they are testaments of a new age, scrappy and indelible, unlike before. And the "Suncreen Song" is a classic in and of itself - a paean to the lost art of Spoken Word, this is right up there with Les Crane's classic, "Desiderata" and deserving of the worldwide acclaim it generated. A force to be reckoned with, despite the Academy's oversight of not nominating him as Best Director for "Moulin Rouge" Luhrman proves he's not a flash-in-the-pan, but rather, a lyrical, magical auteur of the sort our generation is not used to having. Long live Baz!

Although I bought CD only because od "Sun screen" song - it was one of the best CD purchases in last year. You can easily start with fast catching Sun Screen song, and soon after you will find yourself repeating whole CD over and over and over and over again...

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody's Free To Wear Sunscreen....I Like It!, March 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Something For Everybody: Baz Luhrmann (Audio CD)
I heard this song for the first time this morning on my way to work. I want to get a copy for my children. I just turned 45 in Feb. 1999 and this song tells some truths about the past and inspires you to change how you feel about the present. My folks are getting older and I need to spend some quality time with them. My life has been so full with my children that I haven't spent as much time as I would like with my parents. But don't scrimp on your time with your children either...that is very important...you only have them for a little while. I want to impress upon my kids to listen to the words and live their life NOW TO THE FULLEST and not wait till they are 45 to say I wish I had done some things differently. Tell your spouse you love them everyday...Live every day to the fullest...be nice to people...and most especially be nice to yourself. Keep God in your life and LOVE LIFE. It only lasts seconds.

This cd is kind of wierd. Or eclectic, whichever. It features cool adaptions of popular song featured in his great movies and plays. Its dancable, or strictly just sit around listening music. Some of the songs are somewhat unaccessible at first listen, but just give them some time. Overall this is a great CD. I also recommend the Moulin Rouge Soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, November 1, 2001
This review is from: Something For Everybody: Baz Luhrmann (Audio CD)
This CD is one of my favorites ever. It's worth buying just for Sunscreen and Happy Feet! Bazmark Luhrmann's best work was put into one CD. He directed great movies/plays, and their soundtracks have all combined into one. And two all new songs have been added, Jupiter and Bazmark Fanfare. I listen to all but 2 songs on the CD. With the variety of genres of music contained, it really is something for everybody!

A masterpiece of music, fire, passion and art. I keep finding myself gifting it, again and again, to younger people unfamiliar with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most creative Cd's I've ever owned, February 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Something For Everybody: Baz Luhrmann (Audio CD)
Having heard the single "Everybody's Free(to wear Sunscreen) on a Boston area station, I went into a brief insane search for the album. Four days later, I found it, and was not disappointed. From the vaudville opening credits to the magnificent fanfare of "Jupiter" at it's close, this album is great. Remakes of classic eighties songs like " When Doves Cry" and "Time after Time" are combined with upbeat remixes of songs from various decades, such as the early forties song "Happy Feet" (That one always makes me giggle!) Truly a unique album that I have recommended to all of my friends. Baz Lehrman is a genius. Such diversity is to be applauded
