Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

On Something/Everything, Wolf Colonel's humbly disingenuous and often hilarious singer-songwriter Jason Anderson asks: "Don’t you think we should kiss while the Hüsker Dü is playing?" What’s a girl to say? Anderson tops it off with the wry but earnest "Sophomore," melodious yet overlaid with fuzz. This chuckle-inducing knee-slapper lovingly portrays--and captures the mood of--a confused co-ed: "She threw away all her bras / Started listening to Was Not Was / The second album is her favorite / A double single in the dormitory--yeah!" Jangly and trebly, "Thinking About You" is another selection with wicked yet endearing lyrics. The album, however, is not all wonderfully sappy and infectious folk-pop full of infectious hooks. K Records prodigy Phil Elvrum (the Microphones, D+) produced parts of Something/Everything, and his influence is felt during introspective moments where a harp-like nylon-stringed, acoustic guitar is in evidence ("From Wisconsin:). Like the Microphones, Wolf Colonel play with varied genres, including post-rock ("That's My Life"), break beats ("Citizen's Arrest"), and lo-fi ("Break the News"). This romantic noise-pop experiment is fun and very, very sweet. --Jillian Steinberger

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Album, October 8, 2002
By
This review is from: Something Everything (Audio CD)
Although this will probably go under the radar screens of most listeners seeking out the next "postpunk" sensation from Brooklyn or garage rocker from Detroit, Wolf Colonel (aka Jason Anderson) has released one of the most memorable albums of the year. From start to finish, every song is well crafted and extremely honest. Many songs may recall GBV circa Bee Thousand, but to call the songwriting derivative of Pollard's would be a mistatement. Although the songs are short and have a heavily impressionistic feel, the lyrics are filled with everyday observations and feelings, as opposed to consisting of random words strung together melodically. Highly recommended for fans of The Microphones.
