Product Description

Ray Weaver may be an ex-con, but he isn’t a bad person. As he puts it, he just made a mistake or two and things snowballed from there.

When a drug deal goes south, things start snowballing again and Ray swears he’ll do anything to stay out of prison.

Accompanied by his best friend Tito, Tito’s part-time girlfriend Veronica, and Jojo—a punk he can’t stand—Ray heads to an abandoned plantation in north Alabama. The plan is to lay low and relax until things blow over. He doesn’t anticipate the snowball will continue growing, even after he finds a mutilated body on the property . . .

No, Ray is satisfied right where he is. If he gets the chance and the courage, he might even make a move on Veronica.

But soon . . .

Very soon . . .

Ray will realize they’re trapped at that old plantation by SOMETHING EVIL . . .

And the way it’s looking, he won’t live to enjoy his freedom . . .

4.0 out of 5 stars A real thrill-ride of a horror tale, March 21, 2011
By
This review is from: Something Evil (Kindle Edition)
Something evil lurks in the sleepy Southern backwater of Keller Falls . . .

Ray is down on his luck and running from a one-way ticket back to the slammer. Joined by his best pal Tito and 'business associate' Jojo, they set out for an abandoned antebellum plantation house to lie low and plan their next moves. Tito's girlfriend Veronica tags along, but her growing interest in Ray proves troublesome. Their troubles only multiply when one of their partners in crime turns up missing, not to mention the long arm of the law that shows up in the form of officer Rita. Ray's escape after she arrested him is just too big a blow to let slide, and she's hell bent on hauling him back in dead or alive.

Each of these characters is on the run to or from something when they land in Keller Falls, but none are prepared for the dark force that could make the out-of-the-way hide out their final destination this side of life. They'll have to form an unlikely alliance if any hope to make it out.

Cal Noble masterfully transports his readers into the scene. You can feel the oppressive heat, visualize every nook and cobweb covered cranny of the old dilapidated antebellum home, and smell the must of decay mixed with sweat, menthol, and fear. Mix that with his attention to detail, this story feels truly Southern rather than being cliché. He also manages to keep the tension and ominous tone going through several chapters of "waiting for the boogeyman to show up," which was great! This horror tale will keep you on the edge of your seat and wondering who (if anyone) is going to get out alive.
