5.0 out of 5 stars Rocking Their Way To The Top, April 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Something Fierce (Audio CD)
As its name implies, this rock quartet led by singer/multi-instrumentalist/ songwriter Spencer Albee, formerly of Rustic Overtonesis a many-tentacled beast. It revels in the pop-art craft of the Brian Wilsons and Harry Nilssons while also bowing at the altar of late-'70s-era power pop, à la Joe Jackson, Cheap Trick, etc. At the same time, its sound is as original as it is compelling. On its second indie release in as many years, the band shines on the title track, a monstrous tune that's gathering steam at commercial alternative stations in its New England base and is primed to break nationwide; the lovely, R&B-flavored ballad "Forevermore," which could have been a collaboration between Marvin Gaye and Paul McCartney circa 1971; and opener "Vacation," a refreshingly light-hearted teen-angst anthem. With no shortage of smarts and talent, Rocktopus richly deserves a chance to step into the big leagues.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power pop at its finest, June 1, 2003

It is very clear that Spencer Albee and the boys know their power pop. All comparisons to other musicians, like Wings, Cheap Trick, Sweet, Badfinger, Andrew Gold, Harry Nilsson, somehow fall short as a way to describe what this band has created: pure synthesis of pop music. This album is a revelation. You will be helpless to resist the killer hooks and melodies. I promise you this...Something Fierce is topped only by their ability to perform live. See them. Love them. Buy the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Fierce has Gathered., April 1, 2003

That's Right. Something fierce has gathered and it smells like Rocktopus. Rocktopus's second album "Something Fierce" is just that. The catchy lyrics of "Saturday Night" "25" and "Forevermore" are enough to keep your cd player on repeat for forever. Spencer and the gang are road tested and ready for the top. A CD collection without "Something Fierce" is scarcely a CD collection at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite the collection of songs, October 1, 2004

This review is from: Something Fierce (Audio CD)
Though Rocktopus no longer exists (at least by name), selections from this CD definitely still top my playlist. Every once in a while you find a CD that can lift your spirits and really get your feet tapping to the music.

My personal favorites are "Two Feet", "Something Fierce", and "Saturday Night", but the entire album is amazing (as is the band's new material as As Fast As). As Albee asks in "Forevermore", "What can I do just to make you dance?" For me, the answer often lay in simply playing this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars a thoroughly live band, July 7, 2003
By
This review is from: Something Fierce (Audio CD)
I had a chance to see Rocktopus at the very tiny Barley Pub in Dover, New Hampshire over the July 5 weekend. I had never heard them before and their music almost instantly convinced me to get up and dance.

This is pop hooks with guitar licks and keyboard noodlings, but they pull it off like no one else.

I have seen the future of rock and its name is Rocktopus. If you get the chance to catch their east coast tour, by all means, buy a ticket. I highly recommend the live show, and as a result the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raising the stakes, April 15, 2003

The band Rocktopus, apparently has not heard of the phrase "sophmore slump", because they have defied all rules and logic with their follow-up album "Something Fierce." Their music is refreshingly innovative - think Cheap Trick meets The Cars with Ben Folds thrown into the mix. But don't get me wrong, Rocktopus certainly deserves to be in a category all its own. Once you hear the catchy lyrics and slammin' melody you'll be hooked and left wondering why you hadn't discovered this band sooner.

5.0 out of 5 stars something fierce, indeed, April 15, 2003
By
jenniferT (Farmington, ME) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Something Fierce (Audio CD)
I drove to PortsmouthNH from FarmingtonME to see these guys play an acoustic show at 1130pm, the eve of this cd's release. Never before have I seen such beautiful musicanship and energy. Hache, Spence, Brian, and Zach are talented musicians who put considerable amounts of time and effort into creating music for the masses to enjoy.

This cd is all sorts of spectacular. To start off, the song "Vacation" is an instant adrenaline rush. It is an anthem for young and old, a song I sing as I sit in my dorm room and type papers and wish to get out of here.

And the music continues to get better. My personal favorites include the upbeat "Saturday Night", the spectacular "Forevermore" (its so sweet), "Something Fierce", "Leaving Town", "25", and "Down and Out". Just to name a few.

I recommend that you pick it up; this cd is good for your soul and the souls around you who can hear it. Play it loud as you drive in your car and as you sit in your dorm room. You will be enlightened. Thank you. Kick it with the Rocktopus. :-)

If you haven't heard of this band before now, you will soon. The catchy tunes so reminiscent of McCartney's style that you'll swear it's him. This band is the best thing coming. All ages pop rock gold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something Fierce is Gathering!, April 14, 2003
This review is from: Something Fierce (Audio CD)
Rocktopus is definitely the next big thing. They know how to rock old school, and have a very distinctive sound. I suggest this CD to anyone who enjoys good music by a good indie rock band. I just saw them last weekend and they definitely brough the house down! So buy it, now, and Rocktopus will love you!
