5.0 out of 5 stars A Love Story, September 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember watching Something for Joey in high school and I loved it. As it is said at the beginning of the film it is a true story...a love story. It's not your ordinary football film and not a 'disease of the week' movie either. This is a movie powered by inspiration, love, triumph, and heart. When I saw it again a couple of weeks ago, I got choked up at the Heisman Trophy speech delivered at the end. If you loved Brian's Song (another tear-jerker), you will love this film. You will feel blessed that there are good people like John Cappaletti out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars sweet, nostalgic '70's tear-jerker, July 10, 2000
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I saw this first when I was 9 years old and I cried then... just saw it again recently on tv and I cried again. Sweet, endearing and true story of a big close-knit family... eldest son is a football superstar and the youngest son is going in and out of remission with Leukemia.

The types of cancer treatments we take for granted today were not available when young Joey Cappuletti was diagnosed as a toddler. His mother's devotion and flawless recordkeeping of his every ailment and medication helps to lengthen his life as new treatments become available.

Reality hits home when a fellow child cancer patient and friend of Joey's dies and the family can no longer hide the truth from him. Joey then asks the impossible of his brother...

Definitely worth watching, especially since it's a fantastic, true story of a sweet, incredible family under extraordinary circumstances.

I had the Honor of going to the same High School as John in Drexel Hill, PA. He was revered as a hero for what he had accomplished on and off the field. I remember how hard I cried when I first watched SOMETHING FOR JOEY. Although I already knew the stories ending,I still loved it.. It was still masterfully done on film. It is one of my top 2 movies of all time. I still cry everytime I see the film. This film blows away BRIANS SONG..although I enjoyed that as well.. I wish I had my very own copy of the film but I can't seem to find it anywhere. If someone reads this please contact me at JOESTACOL@AOL.COM ...I'll pay anything for a copy of this film..My copy was ruined in a basement flood. The film shows how close a family can grow in troubled times. The film reminds me about how important family is and that there is no sacrifice that we should not make for each other as John did for Joey. This film is a movie for all generations...it shows just how far the medical field has come in 23 years...This movie is a great educational resource for young adolescents... ENJOY!!

5.0 out of 5 stars "The most touching movie I've ever seen!", March 4, 2006
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
When I first saw this movie, I must have been about 13 or 14 years old. I can honestly say that I've never cried harder watching this movie than any other. My mother was watching it with me when I first saw it on local TV and she even asked me if I was ok, I was crying that hard.
It's a very inspirational story of a little boy named Joey who has leukemia, his older brother is his hero. John Cappeletti being his older brother (spelling may be wrong on his name) played college football for Penn State in the early 70's and won the heisman trophy as a huge underdog. John went on to play for the L.A. Rams but his NFL career was nowhere near his success in college. It turns out, the real hero of the movie is Joey, suffering through all the treatment of medicine to fight his leukemia. Throughout the movie Joey asks John to score touchdowns for him, amazingly he fulfills all of Joeys' wishes. In the long run, Joey actually inspires John to excel better then he could ever imagine, becoming the real hero. John gives Joey the heisman trophy during his acceptance speech because he feels Joey deserves it more. IF YOU DO NOT CRY AT THE END OF THIS MOVIE, SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOU!!
I highly recommend this movie the next chance you get to see it and HOPEFULLY it will be out on DVD soon!!! You can get it on VHS for now.
A movie filled with love, passion, desire, hope and inspiration that will leave you in awe! Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something For Joey---"I really loved it.", June 2, 2000

I first saw this movie when I was about 7 years old, it came on TV. I loved it. I saw it again when I was at a friend's home in college, it was contained in her video collection. I missed the opportunity to acquire a copy of it. I'm kicking myself now. The fact that it was a true story made the movie even more enjoyable. It portrayed true human compassion and spirit, I've seen few things since that have moved me more. John where ever you are today, I'm sure Joey continues to be with you. I've thought of this movie a few times throughout my life for my own personal reasons and it continues to keep me reminded of why I do what I do.

I would just love it if anyone would be willing to send me a copy through the US Mail System or by some other means. Don't worry about the cost of the blank video or the shipping, I would be more than pleased to accept responsibility. Wishing at some point that Amazon.com makes this video available once again. Take care to all the reviewers to this classic, past and future. Joseph.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great Remider of What Really Matters in Life, June 3, 2006
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Quite possibly the best sports story ever made; truth is better than fiction. This incredible true story chronicles the life of Joey Cappelletti, little brother to the 1973 Heisman Trophy Winner (and big brother) John Cappelletti. There are so many reasons to purchase and watch this film. It is inspirational, historically accurate (it uses actual game films of PSU football -- and John Cappelletti of course), but perhaps most of all; it chronicles a simple American family's struggle with faith through triumph and tragedy. It reminds me most of the way things once were in the Country I love so very much. The Cappelletti family's example serves as a reminder to all Americans of what really made our country great, and what is the most sure building block of Western Civilization. Anyway, the movie is incredibly moving and incredibly inspirational all at the same time ... and if you are not crying by the end of this one, then you haven't got a heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real life story of Penn State football star, February 13, 1999
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a heart warming story of John Capaletti's championship season as a running back at Penn State and the struggle of his family when John's little brother, Joey, simultaneously fights leukemia. Even though John wins the Heisman Trophy that year, the story really revolves around this close working class family's support of each other in this time of triumph and tragedy. Inspirational and accurate, this is one of the best sports stories on film. Great family entertainment.

I watched this movie back in the 70's and then again in the early 80's and have been looking for it everywhere so that now my own sons can watch it, but I havn't had any luck. This was a truly great, inspirational movie. My aunt was a cheerleader at Penn State during the time John was playing football there and she said the movie was true to form. (Not that they would make anything up, but as far as the kind of person he was while he was dealing with all of this). I would buy this movie in an instant if it came out again on video.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful example of unconditional love., March 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Something for Joey [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember watching this movie in the early 80's and have been looking for it on video for ten years. What a wonderful portrayal of love and support. There are a lot of people in our society that could learn about sacrifice, family, and values. I cried in the early 80's and cried as I watched Monday night. A must see for all ages.
