5.0 out of 5 stars Good Girl... Bad Boy... Great Story
This is one of Mrs. Jenkins best work to date. I really enjoyed the Edge of Dawn, but I enjoyed this even more. The main characters intrigue you from the very beginning but I really fell in love with the supporting characters. The town of Henry Adams became very real to me and it was like I lived there. Any author that can do that is absolutely awesome...

3.0 out of 5 stars "Lady Mayor"
I'm sorry to say that this novel was just o.k. I love reading the rich history of the 1800's but the storyline was painfully slow. To me Olivia and Neil just didn't have that fire, true their lovemaking was hot but I don't know, I feel that something just wasn't there between those two. Now when they appear in Teresa's story "Wild Sweet Love", they're adorable. Teresa and...

This is one of her best stories! If you are a Beverly Jenkins fan or you just love a great story, then this is the book for you. I loved the book from the beginning till the end. The story is about outlaw Neil July and the mayor of a small Kansas town, Olivia Sterling.

Olivia "runs away" from her home in Chicago to escape an arranged marriage by her father. Olivia first encounter with Neil is on her way to Kansas and he robs the train.

I am not going to give away the story, so purchase this book and enjoy.

Carol

5.0 out of 5 stars BEVERLY JENKINS HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!!, May 4, 2005
This review is from: Something Like Love (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been a fan of Ms. Jenkins for many years. I have read several of her books more than once and after having read "Something Life Love," I am about to go back and re-read "Always and Forever," "The Taming of Jessi Rose," and "Topaz." I was introduced to Ms. Jenkins at least 10 years ago through my best friend with "Night Song," and subsequently became a die-hard BJ fan. Although I don't yet own "Night Song," I'm putting in an order for it right now so that I can re-read it, too.

With "Something Like Love" she has once again created characters that one cannot help but love. Despite Neil July's unlawful profession, he is quite a man, and Olivia Sterling is the type of woman I would be proud to call my friend. Ms. Jenkins' stories never fail to make me laugh out loud, cry tears of joy and cheer loudly for the always superb ending. If you've never read any of her books, pick any one -- I guarantee you will not be disappointed. She is a dynamic story teller as well as an informative history teacher. Always rich with historical content, Ms. Jenkins will leave you satisified with the knowledge she has imparted about the history of "the race" as well as by the moving and always sensual romance shared by her heroes and heroines.

"Something Like Love" is a wonderful, exciting and heart-warming novel by the best darned historical romance writer I've ever had the pleasure of reading. I look forward to meeting her one day so I can tell her so in person.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great One!!, May 24, 2005

Why hasn't Oprah discovered this author? We have and again Ms Jenkins has not disappointed and done it again. She has shown that she can go from historical, young adult, contemporary and back to historicals. In Something Like Love she brought back characters we are all familiar with and put together a story that you hate to see end. I plan to read this book again while I sit on the porch waiting for a Neil July. Keep up the good work, Ms Lady.

5.0 out of 5 stars You won't be disappointed with this one!!!, May 9, 2005

Beverly Jenkins has done it again! I pre-ordered this book as a few months ago and I practically ripped open the package when it finally arrived.

This book was definately written for readers who have read Night Song, Topaz, The Taming of Jesse Rose, and Always and Forever. We are given the treat of catching up on some of our old friends (Cara and Chase Jefferson, Dixon Wildhorse, Sophie and Asa, The Spinsters, Jackson and Griffin Blake, Preacher, and of course the Terrible Twins.

This story centers on Olivia Sterling and Neil July. Neil was first introduced to us in The Taming of Jesse Rose as one of the Terrible Twins. The main thing I liked about their story is that it's believable. I could feel the growing attraction coming through the pages. My favorite scenes are "in the cellar" and "late night ride". There are also two bad guys in this story that do their part to make everything come together.

I also didn't feel too bad when I finished the book. I believe we may see Teresa again in her own book since she's only 19 in this one and has room for alot of character development. Will she continue to be an outlaw or fall in love and give it all up?

Also, you may catch another foreshadowing line in there about the other characters that were brought back. I won't give it away here, you'll have to read it for yourself. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars BEVERLY YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN!!!, May 3, 2005
This review is from: Something Like Love (Mass Market Paperback)
Ms Jenkins has once again written a great story. Her combination of history, romance and comedy is unrivaled. I loved this book and read it in five hours. This is the story of outlaw Neil July and Olivia Sterling. She is escaping an arranged marriage and he is a train robbing outlaw. I loved how Ms. Jenkins brought back a lot of her characters, Chase & Cara Jefferson, Dixon Wildhorse, Jackson Blake, Griffin Blake, The Preacher and Two Shafts from previous novels. I felt like I was there in the story and seeing old friends. Ms Jenkins also has a very skilled way of writing love scenes which are not obsence or disgusting. Beverly I had the pleasure of meeting you in New York 2004 at the Sistah's Sippin Tea Book Club Sistah Weekend. You were very warm and gracious...just one of the girls enjoying the weekend with us. I also appreciated you signing all my copies of your books. I wish you continued success and can't wait for the release of your next novel. You can't write them fast enough for me!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mayor and her Outlaw, December 30, 2005

What would you do if your father promised your hand in marriage to a man you couldn't stand to be around? Finding herself in such a predicament, Olivia Sterling wanted nothing more than to get as far away from her father as she possibly could. With the help of her mother she runs away leaving Chicago en route to Henry Adams a small town situated in Kansas, where she plans to open a seamstress shop. During the long and tiring train ride, the infamous Neil July and his gang rob the passengers. Luckily, Olivia has only a few visible items to be taken, the money she has been saving to open her shop is neatly sewn into the seams of her clothing.

After going through Olivia's meager offerings, Neil knows that she is holding out on him. Since he's a little smitten by her, he opts for the promise of a kiss the next time their paths cross. Several months later the two meet again and Neil reminds Olivia that she still owes him a kiss. Olivia, now mayor of Henry Adams, warns him that she cannot be seen with him and of her civic duty to turn in wanted criminals of the law.

Once again, the very talented Beverly Jenkins has written an inspiring and heartfelt novel. The character and plot development were on point and the storyline was flawless. Fans of Ms. Jenkins know her novels are not complete without the history lessons of our ancestors found throughout. If you are looking for a wonderful novel, then I highly recommend you read SOMETHING LIKE LOVE.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, sexy story....., May 30, 2006
This review is from: Something Like Love (Mass Market Paperback)
As always, I cannot put a Beverly Jenkins book down! I read "Something like Love" in a day.

I truly enjoyed Neil July and Olivia Sterlings' story. I was held in suspense, wondering if these two would REALLY be together. After all, Neil was an outlaw and Olivia became -- of all things -- the town mayor. However, with an outlaw as sexy and fine as Neil, I can't blame Olivia for falling...

I also loved that Neil and his brother, Two Shafts, got a chance to show us some more of their "special justice" and "play." Catching up with Chase and Cara Jefferson(Night Song), Dix Wildhorse (Topaz), Jackson Blake (Topaz and Always and Forever), Griffin Blake, and the Preacher (Taming of Jessi Rose)was like being at a family reunion.

The only thing I hate about a Beverly Jenkins' book is that it ends! Ms Jenkins thank you, thank you, for your gift!

5.0 out of 5 stars How Did I Miss This One??!!, April 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Okay, I have become obsessed with Beverly Jenkins and am on a quest to read all of her books, starting with the historical romances. I thought I had read all that are available on Kindle, but discovered this one the other night; of course, I bought it immediately. Just like all the other books, this one is good, y'all! I was curious to see how she would pull off the whole mayor and outlaw love story, but she did it, as only Ms. Bev can. I didn't read the reviews for the book beforehand, so imagine my surprise when Dix, Jackson AND Griffin showed up. I think I swooned! I loved that she brought them all together for the story. I already read Teresa's story, but it was nice to see her in her 'lady outlaw' days. It was also nice to see Chase and Cara Lee, especially since I just finished Night Song.

I would love for Two Shafts to have a story, and Preacher as well (nice twist for him in this story, by the way), but I guess Preacher is a little too righteous for that 'passion thing' - unless he marries the girl first. But not to worry, if a story is done for Preacher, Ms. Bev would definitely work it out.

Beverly Jenkins, you are the absolute best! Keep up the good work!

I truly feel for the reviewers who gave this book such poor ratings. Although this wasn't one of BJ's steamier novels, it was still well written like ALL of her other novels. I am a DIE HARD fan of Mrs. Jenkins and I appreciate her ability to intertwine romance with African-American history. I enjoyed the lady mayor and outlaw storyline and I love how Mrs. Jenkins re-introduces characters from her other novels. I have been reading historical romance novels since I was a teenager and I have NEVER found another author who interests me in the same way that Beverly Jenkins has in my 35 years on this earth. Keep up the AWESOME work Mrs. Jenkins, your REAL fans will keep reading!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!!
