Released on 7/20/64, original pressings of CAPITOL's mono version of SOMETHING NEW (T 2106) are on their classic black w/rainbow swirl label. It peaked at #2 on Billboard's album chart, staying there nine weeks. This third CAPITOL Beatles release has back cover liner notes that plug the Fabs' new motion picture A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964), plus three previous singles. There's noticeable audio differences here from the U.S. stereo album (see below).

SIDE ONE
"I'll Cry Instead" anticipates music John would make in late 1965, his RUBBER SOUL period. In mono it includes a "missing" third verse. "Things We said Today" is Paul double-tracked. In it, he considers the future, a couple looking back at what they expressed when love was new. "Any Time At All" is a great Lennon rocker. Paul vocalizes the higher-pitched second line of each refrain. In mono, there's a different mix in the bridge. Super three-part harmonies on "When I get Home." It's another John spotlight. The intro of "Slow Down" is a throwback to '50s rock & roll. Lyrics are pure John Lennon. Ringo plays tight drum fills; George has had better guitar solos. John punctuates with "Ow"s and a final "Whoo!" Ah Ringo, American girls loved you! His vocal on the c&w-ish "Matchbox" is earnest enough.
