So True!,
This review is from: Something New: Reflections on the Beginnings of a Marriage (Hardcover)
I heard about this book on accident and immediately purchased it after reading what it was about. I am in the first year of marriage & identified with so much of what Ms. Beesley was writing about. This was an excellent book and it gave me a great feeling to know that other women, in their first year of marriage, experience what I am now experiencing. I would buy this for all my single & married friends!

I was surprised at how accurate and candid this book was, complete with funny descriptions of the true feelings that come with getting married. I've already given my copy to my best friend, who's engaged and (like most of us) clueless about what's to come. The writer puts things beautifully and honestly, and once you open the book you can't put it down. The best book on the subject of marriage that I've ever read. Thank you, JR, for recommending it!

My maid of honor gave me this book the day before I got married, and I absolutely couldn't put it down. The author is hysterically funny about the honest ups and downs of getting married (so true! ) and she is a very sensitive and moving writer when it comes to her mother's illness with Alzheimers. This is the best and most honest book I've read about getting married, and I recommend it to anyone thinking of getting hitched. Don't be scared!

Something Ho Hum,

Overall, a disappointing read. If you're looking for something new on the subject of marriage--or Alzheimers--look elsewhere. This book is all surface gloss and no substance; you come away from this book with the impression that Ms. Beesley can't, or won't, speak to the heart of any issue deeply, including what it means to slowly lose your mother. There's really only one well-defined character in this book--Ms. Beesley--the rest are ghosts or cartoons. Feminists and philosophers, beware.

From a Man's Perspective...I'd Marry Her!,

To bad this chick's already been snagged by some lucky dog, 'cause she captured my heart. Funny, touching, poignant, mirthful, distressing, etc. Reflections on the Beginnings of a Marriage reminds me why we continue to search for our soul-mates. Yes, Amanda, I will continue. Thank You.

I am recently married (6months) and just finished this book. I found myself relating to the author on so many levels. I joked to all I knew that I was the most neurotic bride that has ever lived, and I found that I had a kindred spirit out there. I appreciated her candor and insight. She is a very real person and her experiences helped her grow as a woman, and secondly in this new role of wife. She is someone who I would love to have coffee with. I would certainly recommend this book to any newlywed or newly engaged.

A beautifully written account of the female perspective on dating, marriage, careers, and parents. Amanda perfectly juggles the comic with the tragic and everything else in between. A MUST read for the single guy in search of a sole mate, a city slicker in search of the country, and anyone who's planning a wedding.

Beautifully written, extremely moving, hysterically funny, and impossible to put down. I would recommend this book to anyone even remotely involved with marriage. A perfect gift for every bridal shower!

A real let-down,

After reading all of the rave reviews on this book, I decided to buy it, hoping to read something touching and reflective. As I am engaged myself, I thought it might put things in perspective and I looked forward to sharing another woman's thoughts on this important time in my life.I was very disappointed with this book, though. The author doesn't ever go deep enough in to her feelings to give the reader something to relate to. In fact, I couldn't relate to her at all-which ruined the book for me. Readers who have gobs of money might relate to the author's wedding preparations and her feelings, but I thought she was rather shallow instead of baring her soul, like I expected. Also, I found it strange that the description of her actual wedding day didn't have much about what it felt like to get married. Instead, there is a very short description of the wedding and the author obsesses about tripping over the hem of her dress. I was expecting something reflective, touching, deep, or at least something I could relate to in this book. However, it left me with no memorable descriptions whatsoever. This book is a waste of money if you're looking for something at all profound. The author does not seem to know how to write about feelings and emotions.
