Grade 1-3-- Gwen is having a birthday , and her friend Jill is planning a surprise party. Perfect plans are made, yet strange things begin to happen. Some of the invitations disappear, and then all of the presents and the cake are missing. Gwen, Jill, and their friends study the clues and set off on a treasure hunt that leads to Gwen's best birthday party ever. Snappy illustrations enhance the story by sharing all of the clues to solving the mystery with readers. Similar in format and style to Levy's other "Something Queer" books (Delacorte), this is a happy romp that young readers will enjoy. --Pamela K. Bomboy, Chesterfield County Public Schools, VA LEWISON, Wendy Cheyette. Where Is Sammy's Smile? illus. by Katy Bratun. unpaged. (Lift-the-Flap Bks.). Grosset. 1989. Tr $10.95. ISBN 0-448-40150-9 . LC 88-83057. ~ S-- When Sammy comes to breakfast frowning, his worried raccoon family decides to hunt for his smile. After a wild hunt, the smile turns up right where it should be--on his face. Although the story borders on being too cute, the episode strikes a chord of realism as a tactic that loving parents may use to cheer a young child. Designed with flaps to lift as the search ensues, it is similar to the "Spot" series (Putnam) by Eric Hill. Bratun's colorful watercolor illustrations spreading to the edge of the page depict an appropriately messy household. The depiction of the chubby raccoon family calls the Berenstain Bears to mind. Predictable, but a pleasant enough romp with popular appeal. --Susan Nemeth McCarthy, Arlington County Public Library, VA
