I heard Nineteen Stars prior to buying this, it must've been the acoustic version because there was no electric guitars or anything in the version I'd heard. So, naturally, I figured the entire record would follow suit. Nope. As Monster began I was left thinking "Holy (expletive)". Simply put, Meg & Dia can rock with the best of them without compromising their strong vocals. One record into their career and they've already outdone the vast majority of female-fronted bands, that in itself is an accomplishment.
Something Real was actually in my recomendations here on Amazon and the reviews, for the most part, made this sound like the CD to buy. There's no shred of regret in my eyes after hearing it fully more than a few times. The lyrics, vocals, and music is all very tasteful to the mood of the song and is never overdone. The lyrics are particularly great, as seen in songs such as Monster, Tell Mary, Masterpiece, and Getaways Turned Holidays. The vocals have the perfect blending of power and vulnerability. And the music is fairly ambitious, as evidenced is songs like Monster, Indiana, and Nineteen Stars. Monster seems to be the most popular song featured as it gets talked about the most and it's all well deserved. It's a perfect introduction to the overall sound that Meg & Dia sport and the lyrics are pretty eery. Tell Mary's vocals shine the most to me, especially in the chorus. The lyrics tell a pretty good story of relationships as well. Masterpiece has some pretty scathing lyrics that end up being the true highlight of the CD. Gripping vocals and driving guitars help out too. Nineteen Stars was my introduction to the ladies so it remains one of my favorites. The music in the verses seems a bit out of place but doesn't hurt the song too much. Getaways Turned Holidays, to me, seemed like a take on our current war where the lyric "I'm prepared to be happy and decieved/I'm supposed to be happy and decieved" speaks volumes. Setting Up Sunday is kind of understated. It's more mellow than the majority of the CD and just feels complete. No certain part of the song really sticks out yet it's still a completely great song. Go figure. My favorite songs are Monster, Tell Mary, Masterpiece, Nineteen Stars, and Getaways Turned Holidays. I have no single complaint about the music but I do hate that on the flap Billboard compares them to the All-American Rejects. But other than that, Meg & Dia prove themselves ten-fold on this release. They may not gain tremendous exposure but they certainly deserve it. I'm sure Something Real will remain in my CD player for quite some time. If you've yet to hear them don't hesitate to buy this, it's worth every penny.

A Guilty Pleasure,

This is an amazing CD. I am amazed that they are not more famous, they are like Avril but better. They do have a lot of pop influences but I would consider them much better than any pop group right now. Standout tracks in my opinion are Monster, Tell Mary, Indiana, and Masterpiece but the whole CD is great.
Update: I saw them live some time ago and they are amazing. They look completely different than they do on the CD cover but they still looked good. However there looks were overshadowed by there talent. They even stayed after to sign autographs. Update Again: I saw them for the second time, this time at a good venue and again they were good even though Meg lost her voice and couldn't sing. This time I got to meet them because after there act they stayed after to greet there fans. In my opinion any decent band who would do that is worth my devotion.

1.Monster-5/5: Deffintely the best track of the album. I like everything about it, wouldn't change the a thing.
2.Roses-4.5/5: This a really good song that I think EVERYONE can relate to. 3.Tell Mary-5/5: The second best track. I absoulutely LOVE the lyrics and chorus. ''Your gonna leave her tonight...'' 4.Indiana-3.5/5: Good song. Not much to say about it though. 5.Masterpiece-4.5/5: I really like this song, especially the lyrics. 6.Rebecca-1/1: Really slow song, not really good, weak chours. 7.Nineteen Stars-4/5: Deffinetly makes up for Rebecca. Awesome song! 8.Cardigan Weather-2.5/5: Another slow song, but a little bit better than Rebecca. I love the ending. 9.Getaways Turned Holidays-4/5: Good song, I kind of like the chorus, but not really catchy. 10.Courage,Robert-5/5: The 3rd best song on the album. I love it! 11.Setting up sunday-3.5/3: I think the last song should of been just a little bit better, but it's still a good song. I would deffinetly recomend for fans who like Aly and Aj. Though, Meg and Dia's lyrics are a little bit ''out there'' kind of.
