3.0 out of 5 stars Decent for teenies
Overall, this sound is unoriginal, but a few songs do have something extra, a little special, that I like. It's poppy and fun, even if it is something I will only listen to alone in my car. Excellent alternative to Britney and Jessica swill, and these ladies are naturally beautiful.

I heard Nineteen Stars prior to buying this, it must've been the acoustic version because there was no electric guitars or anything in the version I'd heard. So, naturally, I figured the entire record would follow suit. Nope. As Monster began I was left thinking "Holy (expletive)". Simply put, Meg & Dia can rock with the best of them without compromising their strong vocals. One record into their career and they've already outdone the vast majority of female-fronted bands, that in itself is an accomplishment.

Something Real was actually in my recomendations here on Amazon and the reviews, for the most part, made this sound like the CD to buy. There's no shred of regret in my eyes after hearing it fully more than a few times. The lyrics, vocals, and music is all very tasteful to the mood of the song and is never overdone. The lyrics are particularly great, as seen in songs such as Monster, Tell Mary, Masterpiece, and Getaways Turned Holidays. The vocals have the perfect blending of power and vulnerability. And the music is fairly ambitious, as evidenced is songs like Monster, Indiana, and Nineteen Stars.

Monster seems to be the most popular song featured as it gets talked about the most and it's all well deserved. It's a perfect introduction to the overall sound that Meg & Dia sport and the lyrics are pretty eery. Tell Mary's vocals shine the most to me, especially in the chorus. The lyrics tell a pretty good story of relationships as well. Masterpiece has some pretty scathing lyrics that end up being the true highlight of the CD. Gripping vocals and driving guitars help out too. Nineteen Stars was my introduction to the ladies so it remains one of my favorites. The music in the verses seems a bit out of place but doesn't hurt the song too much. Getaways Turned Holidays, to me, seemed like a take on our current war where the lyric "I'm prepared to be happy and decieved/I'm supposed to be happy and decieved" speaks volumes. Setting Up Sunday is kind of understated. It's more mellow than the majority of the CD and just feels complete. No certain part of the song really sticks out yet it's still a completely great song. Go figure.

My favorite songs are Monster, Tell Mary, Masterpiece, Nineteen Stars, and Getaways Turned Holidays. I have no single complaint about the music but I do hate that on the flap Billboard compares them to the All-American Rejects. But other than that, Meg & Dia prove themselves ten-fold on this release. They may not gain tremendous exposure but they certainly deserve it. I'm sure Something Real will remain in my CD player for quite some time. If you've yet to hear them don't hesitate to buy this, it's worth every penny.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure, May 23, 2007

This is an amazing CD. I am amazed that they are not more famous, they are like Avril but better. They do have a lot of pop influences but I would consider them much better than any pop group right now. Standout tracks in my opinion are Monster, Tell Mary, Indiana, and Masterpiece but the whole CD is great.

Update:
I saw them live some time ago and they are amazing. They look completely different than they do on the CD cover but they still looked good. However there looks were overshadowed by there talent. They even stayed after to sign autographs.

Update Again:
I saw them for the second time, this time at a good venue and again they were good even though Meg lost her voice and couldn't sing. This time I got to meet them because after there act they stayed after to greet there fans. In my opinion any decent band who would do that is worth my devotion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good album, September 12, 2006
This review is from: Something Real (Audio CD)
1.Monster-5/5: Deffintely the best track of the album. I like everything about it, wouldn't change the a thing.

2.Roses-4.5/5: This a really good song that I think EVERYONE can relate to.

3.Tell Mary-5/5: The second best track. I absoulutely LOVE the lyrics and chorus. ''Your gonna leave her tonight...''

4.Indiana-3.5/5: Good song. Not much to say about it though.

5.Masterpiece-4.5/5: I really like this song, especially the lyrics.

6.Rebecca-1/1: Really slow song, not really good, weak chours.

7.Nineteen Stars-4/5: Deffinetly makes up for Rebecca. Awesome song!

8.Cardigan Weather-2.5/5: Another slow song, but a little bit better than Rebecca. I love the ending.

9.Getaways Turned Holidays-4/5: Good song, I kind of like the chorus, but not really catchy.

10.Courage,Robert-5/5: The 3rd best song on the album. I love it!

11.Setting up sunday-3.5/3: I think the last song should of been just a little bit better, but it's still a good song.

I would deffinetly recomend for fans who like Aly and Aj. Though, Meg and Dia's lyrics are a little bit ''out there'' kind of.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulfilled Sweetness, March 13, 2009
This review is from: Something Real (Reis) (Audio CD)
Meg & Dia make up a strong chick band without all the extra "sex crap" that is so often associated with female rockers these days. There is spice and honesty in their vocals without being overbearing and offensive. Their track "Monster" was heartbreaking as an acoustic, but as a rock ballad it kicks [major behind]. You can rock out to Meg and Dia, or you can tune in to withdraw from your own world and get lulled by their sweet lyrics and beautiful vocals.
They have the sound of a punk band at times, but others they are just like a stage act of guitars and drums. Soulful and very melodic. I catch myself humming their songs day after day. Sometimes it gets so stuck in my head that I think I'm going crazy.
Beautiful, unique, melodic, sweet, intellegent... very very good.

5.0 out of 5 stars These girls no how to rock, April 12, 2008
This review is from: Something Real (Reis) (Audio CD)
I was introduced to these girls when I heard the songs Roses on a TV Channel that was on. I realized that they were on the list for 2007 warped tour but did not take the time to go see the performance. However my liking for this turned when I had heard the song Monster, after that I had gone to listen to 30 second previews of the album. That was it I had fallen in love with the album.

I bought the album and later went to go see them when they were on tour with Angels & Airwaves. I am not to fond of very many girl singers, however Dia's voice is so powerful, beautiful and Flawless that it is not possible to improve it (but she still does). Meg is one of the best Rhythm Guitarists out there. Nick also makes an awesome Drummer.

When you put this CD in it is almost as if the first song on the Record Monster puts you in a trance the soft but sweet melody of the songs roses continues to keep you listening, The entire album is simply amazing. what is awesome about how it is written is you can almost relate to every song. I recommend this album to anybody who likes groups like, Paramore, Boys Like Girls and The Rocket Summer. When they Release the 2008 follow up it will definately be amazing I am looking foward to see what these women and there band can do in the future.

I absolutely love Meg and Dia. I saw them at the concert with Angels and Airwaves and fell in love with them. They are fabulous. I kept listening to their songs over and over on myspace, so I had to have the CD. Just got it and it is awesome. I could listen to nineteen stars and roses all day long, I swear I could. They are good in person, too. Very cute and very passionate. I just love this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown Away, August 3, 2007
This review is from: Something Real (Audio CD)
I first heard "Monster" when i bought the warped '07 compilation cd at wal-mart. i figured it was only five dollars and i would find a couple of groups i havn't heard before that i really liked. Monster was the first song i heard that blew me away. I quickly looked them up on myspace and after hearing a few more songs downloaded Something Real from itunes. When i realized the song Rebecca was based on a book and movie i read/saw my junior year of highschool i did some research and found out some of there songs are based on classic literature that Dia read and fell in love with. The songs make me want to read the books, which is huge as i'm not generally a fan of the genre, but being able to relate to the song on a deeper level would be really nice.
I love the songs off of this CD. Masterpiece and Nineteen Stars are my favorite tracks. Their lyrics feel really deep to me and i can relate to them on alot of levels. Plus the songs make me want to read classic literature. i can't say that about any other songs.
