SFR! SFR!,

I saw these guys in Seattle play with USE and now I see them everytime they're in town and it's always a good time. A buddy of mine gave me the album and it was an instant hit with my stereo - it wouldn't let me take it off. I have Everybody Loves A Lot on my computer at work and I honestly don't think I could get tired of it. It's one of those laid back songs that builds up to an amazing finish. Highly recommended.

All OK!,

Heard these guys on the Ethel channel on my XM. Decided to check them out. Surprised to see no review yet from others out there. Kind of nice finding a great album that not to many people are familiar with. Something For Rockets is a mixture The Killers, The Stills, The Doves, with Postal Service type beats. Worth checking out. Check out these tracks first; All Ok, Red in the Face & Dancefloor.

I listened to this because Mark Hoppus talks about them on his podcast. Like buddyhead the dude has a great sense of humour but kinda indiscriminate taste in music. What struck me immediately is how much the vocals sound like Depeche Mode, and more new DP than old DP. The music generally seems unambitious and not even very contemporary. It reminds me more than anything of a more understated version of INXS and to a lesser extent U2, exhibiting a similarly faceless blend of pop and rock that brings it's pop leanings to the forefront but never really achieves any distinct or memorable hooks or melodies. I guess the fact that they're on 33rd Street Records, a label that generally releases hopelessly outdated conservative unhip music, and boasts a website that looks like it was designed by an 8 year old down's syndrome sufferer, seems apt.

This album is so good. I saw this band live in Seattle and had to get the CD. Very swanky, fun mix of medolies and great lyrics. If I want to dance or have an instant pick me up this is what I put in! If you love music you need to buy this one!

I immediately fell in love with the melodic upbeat tunes. Great for dancing or thinking of the one you love, DM. For those who enjoy stylish and energetic beats, I highly recommend.

I can't believe how awesome this record is. I heard one of the songs on the radio and really liked it so i figured i would get the CD. But it turns out that every song on the CD is great. I can't take it out of my car and whenever i have friends in the car, they always ask me who it is and they want to borrow it. I feel like a huge fan now. I give this album 5 super sexy stars.

I happen to be a big fan of 'The Postal Service' and 'The Strokes' which are 2 different subgenres of indie music. Myspace says SFR is a mix of the Postal Service and The Strokes? Yes, BUT not entirely. The tone of the vocals do remind of the unique indie rock singer Julian Casablancas of The Strokes. Of course, the sounds of The Strokes sounds like 60's,70's, 80's rock/pop. Something For Rockets's music beats are great and the first track does have a hint of 60's music. Some tracks do remind me of The Postal Service's indietronic/indie pop beats. The worst is that the lyrics of SFR are plain, cheap, low-grade, and just TOO general. The lyrics sound like they fit in more with some rap or hip/hop song and are performed in some teenage or high school manner. I mean come on, ANYBODY, can think of those lyrics. If you like poetic, classy, creative, exquisite lyrics that are ACTUALLY LYRICAL(like The Postal Service), then Something For Rockets is not near that. If the lyrics were better with characteristics I mentioned, then I would have added at least 1 more star. In the end, Postal Service is a better all around package for indie pop/electronica music. Even the lyrics in all The Strokes songs are MUCH MORE creative and imaginative. |
