Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered collection from the Gospel quintet featuring two very rare golden age gospel LPs, reissued on CD for the first time: Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee and Precious Time. Both albums have been collectors' items for many years. The dynamic call-and-response vocals, laced with Archie Brownlee's searing screams which would influence countless soul singers, served to inspire their audiences through the decade. Following the death of Brownlee in 1960, Henry Johnson carried on the torrid tradition, as can be witnessed in the opening eleven tracks of this anthology, with the great Archie Brownlee featuring on the other selections. Shout.

Old school Gospel by one of the best groups of the fifties. I saw Archie Brownlee and the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi at least three times in Charleston, SC during the fifties. Twice they were on program with the Five Blind Boys of Alabama with Clarence Fountain, and they would "battle" each other to see who was best. This CD brings back many precious memories. You can hear Archie's perfect tenor and "scream" which James Brown and many others tried to duplicate. The background singers were very talented and complimented Archie's lead. Even though the could not see, they could "feel" each other and you will hear their perfect harmony on these songs. I felt a personal loss when Archie died in 1960 at the young age of 34.
